If the sensor is further from the light it may work better but for this design you just cannot do it.

I have tried more than one type of "screw in" socket type photo eye adaptors for CFL bulbs. This bulb with built in photo eye is the only one that actually works. They used to sell it at Home Depot, but don't any more ( I asked). I had purchased one last year for my back porch that works perfectly. This is one of the only places I could find the product. I also like it because the bulb doesn't hang way down out of the fixture like it does when you use the socket style. I will buy more of these for my other outside lights. It is affected slightly by the location (where the morning sun is) but still had cut off by about 9:30. When you first put it in, if light outside, it takes about 1/2 hr to go off. After that first time, it works normally. I am surprised that is isn't easier to find, a great product. Perfect for going away on vacation.

I purchased this bulb three years ago for my outdoor porch light. It works wonderfully--it comes on in the evening and goes off in the morning, however on cloudy days it tends to stay on due to the reduced sunlight, and overhang of our porch. Despite all these extra hours of use, this single bulb lasted 3 years without flicker and good light output (not dim). I tried to find it in the big box store where last purchased and they no longer carry it, and didn't know what I was talking about; they could only offer the sensor sockets which all the revues state work poorly with dim light output and flickering. So came home, retrieved it from the recycle bag, and plugged in the actual info from the bulb, and here it is! Will buy an extra this time.

I love the bulb... it is the easiest way to add the "dusk to dawn" feature to an existing light fixture. I tried to use the "add on" dusk to dawn socket to the fixture... but that made the bulb too long and it did not look right or function well.

I used these lights in two areas... one works well, the other does not.

On the front of our home we have two wall mounted fixtures with clear glass. No problems! These bulbs work like a champ!

Under the car port I have two ceiling fixtures with frosted glass.... these do not work very well and the lights end up staying on all day.

So be aware that the type of fixture does matter. If your fixture is in an exposed area with clear glass then you will love these... if you have a fixture that is not in direct sunlight and/or has frosted/tinted/colored glass then these may not work well... or at all.

I hope this info helps you out with your purchase!

This bulb is a replacement for the first day/night bulb I had. We dropped the first one while cleaning and wanted another one right away. I went to AMAZON and had it in 3 days. This is a much better solution than a separate sensor.

I wanted a dusk to dawn front porch light without having to buy a new fixture, or without having to use a screw in adapter that would make the bulb stick out of the fixture. This does exactly that. It could probably sell for a few dollars less but it does what I wanted and I'm happy with it.

After trying some photo-sensitive socket extenders in my outside lights, I can say that this Philips product is a far better way to go. It's approximately the same length as a regular bulb, so it doesn't stick outside the fixture or interfere with the cover. Since it is a CFL, it uses less electricity, and provides long-lasting and bright light. Be aware that the bulb portion rotates inside the base, making it feel like it is broken, but that is intentional. It allows you to rotate the bulb, once it is screwed in, so that the light sensor points out. I have three of them, one in my porch light and two in my driveway lights, and all are working perfectly and have been for months.

My one outdoor light is on the porch facing west thus only getting afternoon sun. This light bulb won't turn off no matter how bright the sun is. To prove the sensor is not defective, I placed it on desk lamp facing direct sun light and it works.

I will return this light bulb to Amazon.com and try something else.
