A stately monitor for your PC or DTV set-top receiver, the Philips 42FD9935/17 is less than 4 inches deep and boasts 160-degree viewing angles, an antireflective screen, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and a high brightness rating of 650 cd/m3. With a native pixel resolution of 852 x 480, the EDTV (enhanced-definition) display offers a number of high-resolution inputs, including a pair of VGA/PC inputs and a direct-digital DVI-HDTV connection for use with an external HDTV receiver. The screen has no NTSC or ATSC tuners of its own, so for television viewing you must an use optional DTV receiver or Philips' FTR9965 electronic box (E-Box), which brings dual NTSC tuners and numerous picture enhancements.
With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the 42FD9935/17 is a mere 3.5 inches deep, perfect for wall mounting with the supplied mounting kit or desk mounting with an optional stand.
Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. You do, however, need to be wary of image burn-in (wherein long-held stationary images leave a permanent impression in the screen), though the 42FD9935/17 features technology designed to shift the picture every 5 minutes to avoid this effect and to prolong the life of the screen.
When used in conjunction with the FTR9965 E-Box, the display offers picture enhancements such as Pixel Plus, Digital Natural Motion, Digital Crystal Clear, and Active Control technology as well as 3D Y/C digital comb filter. The E-Box--the size of a typical home theater component--provides NTSC tuning, high-quality video processing, video inputs and other features. By connecting the E-Box, you can enjoy double-window, 2-tuner PIP (picture-in-picture) to view 2 images simultaneously on a split screen.
