Superb Value,
This review is from: Philips 47PFL7422D/37 47-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
This LCD is a winner. Cannot beat the price/performance ratio. I bought it at popular warehouse store for $1699. This unit has 3 HDMI inputs - rare for that price point. The component video inputs do full HD - 1080p. If you do research you'll find that MANY LCD's do NOT carry 1080p over component. This is particularly important for Xbox 360 owners since there's no HDMI out on the non-elite models so 1080p through component is critical.
I think this is a hidden jewel given the quality panel, excellent feature set, and price. Keep in mind I'm a stickler for good color - running a fully calibrated and profiled 24" LCD on my PC with custom profiles for printing photos. I simply can't find anything to complain about with this unit. It's as good as any model I've personally seen in this size range costing hundreds more. Why waste money on a higher priced LCD with TV's now being "disposable" (who repairs TV's anymore)? In 5 years there will be affordable LED backlit units and who knows what else. Jump on the value and enjoy. PS - sadly, the overall rating for this LCD is hurt by an ignorant reviewer who is referencing a DIFFERENT MODEL. UPDATE: I returned this set and bought a Samsung LNT-4671F. This is no reflection on the quality of the Philips - my original comments stand. I only switched because I saw deeper blacks in the Samsung and an overall superior picture (my wife didn't notice a difference for those of you who are not detail geeks like me). This swap comes at a cost - the Samsung was 40% more expensive when I bought it (there's no free lunch). I still recommend the Philips as the best value in the 46-47" size range.

This one DOES do 1080P,

One of the reviews for this item will make you pause before you buy it. The problem is, 2 of the reviews for this item on Amazon.com are for DIFFERENT MODELS. I own this one. This one is beautiful. It has THREE (not two) HDMI inputs and does accept full 1080P, even 1080P/24 (from a BlueRay player). This picture is beautiful. Great set.

Great Picture - best in the store,

I bought a -> Philips 47PFL7422D 47" 1080p LCD HDTV And I will say the set is better than I expected. I was in a Major Store with about 40 TV Sets on one wall. This TV Jumped right out at us and we walked right up to it. Stepped back for 5 minutes and then looked at all the other Sets in the 1500.00 price range 1080P and nothing was close. I don't know what the guy is talking about when he says the set is not black enough. That Perfect Pixel HD Engine is doing something inside this unit. I have Comcast with that great Explorer Cable Box, I used the HDMI plugs and I also have the Phillips DVD Player , the one that allows all type of media, DIVX and all. I have a Mac Pro Tower and I can hook the Monitor right up to it. Very Cool. I don't have a Blu Ray yet, I'M still waiting to see the next generation of players, and maybe a Game BR Player may be a good choice. They make Mod Chips for them to do just about anything. There is a ceiling fan right above the set and that will help keep it cool. These LCD sets run much cooler than a Plasma set and saves a bit on the power bill over plasma. I like this set so much I'M buying two more, one to ship to mom and one for a guest bedroom. The pedestal base is very nice. My set does not have a clicking problem like I read in another post. I read consumer reports, all kinds of reviews, and the salesman. Bottom Line, the set has a stunning clear picture and was half 1/2 the price of the Sony. So I got 2 for 1 on this deal. You will not be disappointed with this set. Don't buy a Plasma just to be cool, the LCD TV's are just as good if not better in many ways. I see many people buying the larger 720P Plasma TV's because they dropped the price to dump them. Take the time to look at a 720P next to a 1080P (Hopefully this set) and you will understand the 1080P is the set to own for the next few years. This is a long post, but I wanted to give a review from a regular gent who tell's it like it is. I don't buy a Brooks Brothers Shirt because of the name, I buy them because they custom make each shirt to my neck and sleeve size. Like 18 1/2" neck and 35 1/2" sleeve. Not just S, M, L, XL and a Polo on the pocket. Don't buy something just because of the brand. Look at the all sets and let your eyes make the decision. All The Best,

Great TV at a great cost,
This review is from: Philips 47PFL7422D/37 47-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
The Philips 47PFL7422 is an excellent tv in all respects (I actually own the 7432, which has ambilight - this is the only difference between the two TVs). Though I would not consider myself an extremely picky buyer, I did a fair amount of research before purchasing this TV, and I believe it is the best marriage of quality and cost.
I bought the TV mainly for sports, and it does not dissappoint - ESPN HD, Fox HD, and CBS HD all look spectacular on this set. I have comcast digital cable, which broadcasts in 1080i, and the picture looks truly amazing. I also have a ps3 hooked up through one of the HDMI inputs, and I have to say - if you're going to buy a 1080p tv, YOU NEED TO BUY A PS3, or at the very least a blu-ray player. Watching movies like "Planet Earth" really shows off the quality of the Philips 47pfl series. A couple down sides to the TV. The contrast ratio isn't spectacular. That being said, if you want deep blacks, buy a plasma. I can't really say I've noticed any problems with the contrast, but my roommate has said that his DVD player looks awful when playing DVD's. I just use my ps3 and even regular DVD's look great. Also, the TV makes some STRANGE sounds when it is off (at least the 7432 model - do some research before you buy this model and see if other users are reporting the same thing). Essentially, the TV sounds like it is turning on and off, when in actuality it will stay off the whole time. Very strange. Of course, this is not an issue for me, as my TV is not in my bedroom. If however you are buying this for a bedroom and you are a light sleeper, beware because the noise is very loud, though it does happen infrequently. One more issue - Philips has acknowledged that the TV suffers from "remote insensitivity" when first turned on. Essentially, your remote will not work for 1-2 minutes. It's certainly not a big deal, but can be annoying. Overall, this TV has been nothing but wonderful for me. I have owned it since late July 2007, and have had no problems with it. HD tv and blu-ray movies look spectacular, and although the blacks are not the deepest I have ever seen, for the price this TV is a no-brainer. Hope this review helps and happy hunting!

Good screen with limited control,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Philips 47PFL7422D/37 47-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
Do not let the three-star review concern you too much, I am pleased with this television purchase. However, the picture quality, clarity, and color saturation are not great but still a good value at the price. Similarly, the sound control is nightmarish. Anyone using this screen for television watching is advised to keep the set permanently muted and to wire the sound through ANY other speaker you can find. All in all, this is an average screen at a somewhat below average price. I would recommend this as a nice step into flat screen technology for those who aren't looking to drop the additional hundreds/thousands for a Samsung or Pioneer set but still want the improvements in television technology.

Amazing Picture Quality, Great Features for a reasonable price,
By Twain Mark "gc" (Toronto ON) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Philips 47PFL7422D/37 47-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
I have had this TV for almost a month now and it is absolutely amazing to watch HD programming on this television.
Please note the model number when looking at a Philips TV. Walmart and SAM's club both sell Philips 1080p 47" TVs but the models are different. I bought mine from SAMS and this one had HD Pixel Engine, while the one at Walmart doesn't. Anyway, back to this TV. I am one of those people who like to do a lot of research before a purchase. I had the following requirements for a TV: - Great Image quality. I still remember looking at some Plasmas and hated the fact that the you couldn't see anything on the screen if you not directly in front of them. I know Plasmas have gotten a lot better, and in my humble opinion LCD's are better. I can actually watch this TV from my kitchen which is atleast at a 45 degrees angle. - Good for at least 5 years. This where the 1080p part comes in. Most programming today is either done in 720p, or 1080i. Only your blu-ray, or HD DVD player will actually be able to utilize the full capacity of 1080p. But I am sure that in future, 1080p programming will be available and I wanted to be prepared. - Great brand, reasonable price. I love Philips, but I love SONY more. The problem with SONY however is that there products always cost a lot more for comparable set of features. This TV has some amazing features like SONY, just not the dazzling price. In the end I am pretty satisfied with everything, or may be I am just trying to justify spending $1700 on an idiot box , who knows. Here are some issues that you should be aware of before you buy an HDTV: 1. Regular programming looks worse. This tv does an excellent job of resizing the image automatically, but it is still a low resolution picture on a huge screen. Remember you don't want horizontal or vertical black bars while watching 4:3 programming because it can cause burn-ins. I know some of you will jump up and say that LCDs don't have that problem. To them I say, READ THE MANUAL. It's available on Philips' website. 2. Burn-ins. I know I covered that in my last point, but again, the manual says that burn-ins can occur, so be careful. I'd rather watch a little stretched out picture than mess up my TV. 3. You have to get HD programming to actually utilize the potential of this mammoth. I am a comcast customer in Florida, and they have a decent selection of HD channels. Remember directv might have more HD channels, but Comcast offers NBC, ABC and all the local channels in HD. It's not how many channels you have in HD, it's how many good channels you have in HD that counts. So before you buy this TV, make sure you have GOOD HD programming in your area. I hope I could help some poor chap out there looking for a little guidance.

This is my first big screen. It was super easy to set up, which is important. The stand that came with mine worked perfectly. The picture is great. Watched a DVD last night -- amazing quality. HD cable channels are mesmerizing. I can't stop watching TV.

This is a great set. Model 47PFL7422D/37 Three HDMI plenty of inputs for expansion. Also bought at the same time a Philips DVD player with HDMI out. Took me a few minutes to get it to do 1080P (if at last resort... read manual ha ha) Picture is crystal clear. [...].

Not what is seen on shop floor,
This review is from: Philips 47PFL7422D/37 47-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
On the shop floor this TV was looking great. It was playing "Kungfu Panda" DVD movie. This movie is bright with many white spaces. So, the picture looked stunning. Don't let the shop floor display fool you!!
But later at home when you watch movies with dark scenes and dimly lit scenes, this TV totally sucks. It was so bad that I regretted buying this TV. I wanted to change the HDMI cable also thinking that it might not be carrying all the signals to the screen....but it was useless. Samsung offers great price/value. Sony is bit more expensive!! But it would be worth the higher prices you pay than to have a problem TV in your hand and trying all the remedial measures to improve the performance and display of the TV. |
