Amazon.com

The Philips 818173 LED GuideLight automatically turns on when it senses motion, so you can easily find your way at night or in dark and unfamiliar spaces. The GuideLight automatically charges when stored on its convenient docking station that doubles as a light stand. You can easily lift the GuideLight off the stand and use it as a flashlight to help guide your way.

Ideal for use at night when you don't want to illuminate the whole room.
Soft Light Helps Transition from Darkness
The soft glow of the GuideLight is ideal for use at night when you don't want a large, intense lamp or overhead light to illuminate the whole room. The GuideLight provides the light you need to identify your surroundings and find your way without disturbing your family members.

Motion Sensor for Instant Orientation
Ideal in places where you need a soft glow at night, the GuideLight operates with a motion sensor and automatically lights up when it detects movement. After 20 seconds without movement, the light will automatically turn off.

Versatility for Multiple Uses
The GuideLight features a manual on/off switch, in case you don't want to use the motion sensor technology. You can also use the lightweight, portable light as a regular flashlight by hooking it over your finger and carrying it with you. Use this versatile light for camping or traveling and have a wireless light source for nighttime movement.

The wireless docking station is a stand & charger base in one.
Docking Station Doubles as Charger Base
The Philips docking station is a light stand and charger base in one. The GuideLight automatically charges while on the base. The light uses induction charging so there are no additional wires or connections to make. Simply place the light on the stand, and the automatic charging begins.

Safety Light Feature for Power Outages
If the power goes out, the GuideLight automatically turns on and stays lit. Use it to finish a task or use it as a flashlight to help find the source of the problem.

This light is attractive, portable, and, in principle, useful; however, the instructions are not detailed (for example: how long does it need to be charged?

I purchased the Philips portable Guidelight so that I could light up my entryway ... and it does that very well. The installation can't be easier ... just plug teh unit in a wall outlet and let it charge ... one fully charged, you can use it as a guidelight. When I open my door it lights up giving me time to put my keys down and open a light. The sensor is only on the Base, so that works only when the light is being charged or is resting on the base. As for the guidelight itself if you want to use it as a flashlight, well, that is not what this is. It gives a soft glow which is strong enought to guide you but that's about it, though I must say it it very light. Having said that, I do like it and would recommend it.

Purchased to aid my mother (90 years old. The light is installed on the night stand next to the bed. She finds the light's motion senors most helpful in accessing her walker at night.

Wave your hand and the nightstand is illuminated, but not enough to blind. The battery backup is nice, although I don't really see using the thing as a portable lantern (it's not that bright).

I enjoy this light that comes on when I enter the bathroom and goes off automatically. Good for those middle of the night visits. Otherwise, it is a pretty weak light that might light up a closet, but not much more. Well built, it still works over a year later.

This light is attractive, portable, and, in principle, useful; however, the instructions are not detailed (for example: how long does it need to be charged? how can you tell if the motion sensor is on or off? ) and the motion sensor in mine is unpredictable, erratic (why does the lamp sometimes light up when there is motion and sometimes not? why does it sometimes take motion of the light itself (being lifted, shifted) to turn it on?). I like the object but not how it works, at least so far in my experience.

'Fun is a common factor in all of the Philips Home Lighting Accessories' and for once a bit of company puffery that is probably true. Least when applied to the kids' version of these lights, plenty of fun all night long turning it on and off with the merest movement.

I thought the light was rather useful and in my case very handy for a bit of illumination on the way to the bathroom (though you would think that anyone should be able to walk round their homes blindfolded).

Simply designed and hand ergonomic with a pleasant glow this could well take off in the marketplace. One aspect of the product does intrigue me: why is it so expensive even taking into account Amazon's low price? The motion sensor and battery technology have been around for some time so nothing new here. Maybe the price is part of the 'fun' aspect!

This seemed like a great design for such a product. The simple charger stand, the convenient handle to carry it with, and a nice soft light for nighttime use. Unlike some reviewers, I wanted a light that would not be bright, but one that I could use when my eyes were well adapted to the dark, and would not be likely to wake my wife in the middle of the night.

The good news was it was all of this.

The bad news came with the movement detector that was supposed to turn on the light (say when you got up at night or entered from another room, etc.). The basic problem was that it was very insensitive. I had it located in a smaller bathroom set about 6 feet from the door. It simply ignored me when I walked in and didn't react at all until I waved my arms around within about 2 feet or less. This makes this feature almost useless. But the problem continued with the time it was to stay on once it did detect movement. The instructions said this would be about 20 seconds (which seemed rather short to me but maybe not for others). However, my unit only stayed on 2-3 seconds or so, not even enough time to get to unit in many cases if it would pick up movements further away.

Bottom line: I sent it back. Just too many critical failures to be useful.

Portable has a new meaning to us. It suggest charging the light 24 hours before taking it our from the charging dock. We took it out to see how it will light after charging it for two days... the light died in 5 second. There goes the portable light function.

if you are just using as a guide light for nightlight for the hallway, it should do the job but it has to be plugged into the wall mount.

The sensor is sensitive enough but the light will not stay on if you block the sensor.
