Cool little toy,

This review is from: Philips 818564 LivingColors Mini Color-changing LED Ambiance Light, White (Tools & Home Improvement)
Due to the difficulty in buying this in the states, my wife bought me one for my birthday over the summer from Germany. It's a great little toy, fun to completely change the mood/color of a room by selecting a different color on the color wheel. It's interactive and fun. Only downsides are that the pre-installed color loop moves way too quickly between colors, and that you cant pre-program your own sets of color shifts. Also, of course, it's sad that only the mini version is available in the US, the larger version has been selling in Europe since '07...

I LOVE LAMP!,
This review is from: Philips 818565 LivingColors Mini Color-changing LED Ambiance Light, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have been coveting this little guy since I heard about it a couple of months ago, and now I have one! I love it! I set it up in the corner of my room on my nightstand and when it is pointed at the wall and reflecting off it is not quite enough to read by, but on my light-colored walls it made the whole room glow. The colors are really deep and rich and I found myself staring at it throughout the evening--it felt relaxing, like an aquarium. The dial is very sensitive and it is just fun to use.I probably won't use the "color cycling" mode every day, but it would be nice to set a fun mood at parties, or as a child's night light. I will probably let my young children use this sometimes, too--you could set the light to blue for pretending to scuba dive, or green for a forest on those rainy days when kids are stuck indoors. I am thinking about getting a second one for them so I don't have to share. Overall it's a fun device and I recommend it if you're a big fan of color and changing your ambiance.

Hello, I am a big fan of color light to create ambiance in a room. Most of my lights are dim-able and my husband and I spend several hours a night relaxing in the dim glow of lights. So I was excited to get this product. However is was a disappointment for me and the hubby. There was several flaws in the design. How the light sits is awkward and the light is prone to roll. It is not intuitive how to place the lamp (globe) to be stable. The new flaw is that the power cord is attached in the direction of the viewer. The product recommends projecting against a wall, which makes sense, but the power cord then is obvious and right in the front. Next the lights are not dim-able so you have to take the intensity of the light that is given to you. Not very subtle or artistic for the user. Finally, the off switch did not work!! So I sent it back to Amazon. I did like the circular finger switch for selecting the color. So I guess I am sort of curious about the reviewers rating the product highly! It is a good idea but I wonder if the engineers did any kind of usability study.

This is a nice though overpriced product. The larger and even more expensive version comes with a remote control and therefore can be placed hidden or at hard to reach places. Another advantage of the larger version is that it can be dimmed, contrary to this smaller version. The smaller version however has a nicer look and fits better in small rooms. Again, a nice buy.

De-lightful for enhancing productivity flow, but should be brighter!,

Earlier, I purchased a Multi-Color E27 LED Light bulb w/ Remote from Amazon and have greatly enjoyed it, but craved more -- it simply didn't shine enough. My creative play-work demands being "in the flow" and mood lighting augments my output superbly, giving a real cinematic feel to even routine tasks like email. Before, I thought playing epic trailer music while pressing Reply would be enough, but clearly, I hadn't experienced mood lights. Months ago, I read reviews of LivingColors and am surprised they still seem very rare Stateside (compared to earlier availability in Europe). A curiosity rather than a commercial phenomenon. While part of this may be due to cost, we each weigh our own priorities, right? Still, I hope for widespread adoption of these colors which feel alive, not unlike how every house has common lightbulbs. Since I already had such a good experience with limited mood lighting, I became intent on expanding my palette. My ownership has only been several (intense) days, but what I tentatively conclude so far is: like cats, having only one LivingColors feels terribly lonely. Even the full-size Philips 69143/60/48 LivingColors Generation 2 Translucent Changing LED Lamp with Remote isn't enough to really light up my workspace at night, and the dynamics of contrast with another color adds so much value and spice. So, I also have a Philips 818564 LivingColors Mini Changing LED Lamp, White (I actually got it first, since the Gen 2 wasn't in stock). With the two of them combined, as you can clearly see in this video, there's a lot of joy to be had. A future feature I'd add is the ability to program custom lighting sequences. Is an iPhone app for this too much to ask? It'd be a natural extension of the current color cycling option, which smoothly cycles through the spectrum on both the Gen 2 and the Mini, and whose speed can be changed, but you can't limit the range or trigger events more specifically. This would open up possibilities to sync to binaural beats and other synesthesiac promises, fulfilling Philips' advertising of really setting the tone in your home. (Or elsewhere.) There are a few niggles I have as shown in the video, but my chief constructive criticism is I wish these puppies were brighter. While they certainly overwhelm my webcam, as other pictures I've taken show, there's plenty of darkness to encroach upon. LED mood lighting in the home still feels like it's an infancy -- not that we'd ever advance into a hippy-dippy psychedelia portrayed in so many 60s trip movies -- but I'd still consider LivingColors for enthusiasts and early adopters like myself, who consider it an important part of your daily life due to your eclectic proclivities, and not just a casual interest. I just hope they don't burn out on me anytime soon.

this is a great mood light. But this is not for all. Having no remote is a downer but i can live with it. no dimmer is a downer. I have the bigger living colors light and love it to no end. This particular light is fine for the place i use it. If you want more options the bigger light is clearly the one to get. Pay less get less, thats life.

The mini color-changer is great! I use it for light in our theater room when my girlfriend and I are watching a movie. The light color we choose depends on what type of movie we are watching.

This review is from: Philips 69150/04/48 LivingColors Mini Color-changing LED Ambiance Light, Copper (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was intrigued when I first saw the more expensive version of this Philips light (the one with the remote control) in the Hammacher-Schlemmer catalog. With their unique lifetime guarantee, Hammacher insists on the best when they select products for sale. So I was excited to find this "Mini" version of the same light -- without a remote, which I don't need anyway -- here at Amazon. And I was even more pleased to find Amazon offering this copper version at twenty percent off the price of the black and white models! I don't know why the copper version apparently isn't as popular as the black and white. The metallic copper color looks cool, and it appears right at home sitting on one of my stereo speakers, splashing colored ambient light on the adjacent wall. I leave this light on color-changing mode, which one accesses by pressing the touch-sensitive "ON" button on the back of the light for five seconds. If you prefer, you can select a steady light in any of the Mini's many colors by touching the color wheel surrounding the ON and OFF buttons. Despite the name, the Mini isn't THAT small -- it measures around five or six inches in each dimension. It also beams a good bright light on the wall, easily illuminating a corner of the living room in my dark studio apartment during the day or night, at a distance of about six to eight inches from the wall. The Mini lends a colorful, warm, and cheery atmosphere to even the most severe man cave. A selection of Minis would also look great adding ambiance in bars or restaurants. They also run cool, use minimal electricity -- and have no moving parts to break down! Highly recommended... |
