cannot tell you how much researching and wasted time i have spent debating for the perfect set of headlights to replace my stock bulbs. the sad fact is that bulbs are bulbs, any after market bulbs are going to be an improvement than the ones you have in now. if your someone looking to drop $50 to $100 for greater output gains there are many options out there but for me, functionality, reliability and at a great price was my overall goal. it came down to the battle of Silver Star, Philips and GE. i have tried them all with my top picks being Philips X-tremes and GE nighthawks, silver star are a great product but they are still over priced and do not last as long as i would expect from a company that says they produce the best replacement bulb. silver star ultra's are more a performance looking bulb with a tint of blue/purple look to them. i was overall happy with the X-trmes, offered a true bright white light with a more centered beam that increases a wider and longer visual display a night. do not expect 80% brighter or any other gimmicks that persuade you towards one band over the other, if i had to give a percentage of gains, would say 30 to 40 percent brightness. for being the cheapest out of all three and for the gains i got, i was impressed. i would recommend these bulbs to anyone wanting a simple solution to enhance driving visibility without breaking the bank.

* bright light output for halogens
* wider than average beam pattern
* excellent build quality (made in Germany)
* smaller size bulbs makes installation easier

* shorter lifetime compared to regular bulbs (150hr)

first thing i do when buying new cars is changing their bulbs. cars, specially economy ones like civics and corollas, are equipped with long life low output lights. only bulbs i don't change are for my HID equipped luxury vehicle. as for halogens, I have tried many bulbs and i have learned 3 important lessons:

1. Do not buy those blue tinted bulbs that run on dangerously high voltage
2. performance bulbs die quickly
3. Philips x-treme are the best darn halogens out there

No matter which halogen bulbs you buy, if they claim more brightness (ie. sylvania silverstra ultra, osram nightbreaker, philips x-treme) they will not last you long. This because the filament burns at higher temperatures to improve brightness. Even still, the Philips x-tremes lasted significantly longer than the sylvania silverstar ultras. Philips x-treme lasted for about 1.5 years or roughly 150-200 hours compared to sylvania's 15 hours! They are also brighter than the sylvanias but not as white. also compared to other bulbs, philips x-treme powers are really well built with water resistant quartz glass and smaller than normal bulb size which makes them easier to install. Overall i recommend this bulb due to its higher than average light output and wider beam pattern. Only disadvantage is reduced bulb life time. Note that there are now newer Philips x-treme vision +100, which are slightly (10%) brighter.

I own 2005 Mazda MPV, while it's been gently used, I notice the headlight bulbs have become dimmer so I got these philips bulbs instead. They draw 67 watts, brighter and not the fake hid blue-ish (which will be harder to see during rainy days), these are slightly whiter. I also compared with other newer cars, my car now has the brighter headlights. I will definitely search for these bulbs for my fogs and I will be ordering them soon. $10 Mfr. rebate is an icing on the cake!

I have made myself become quite the expert on this replacement bulb issue over the last ten years. Being very active on the VW forums, I initially heard about the benefits of the Osram and Phillips bulbs, according to the body politic, the only ones that truly give more white light than the stockers. Many other aftermarket bulbs out there claim more light, but instead you just get some bluish light that may earn you some unwanted attention by Trooper Tommy, and possibly could fail inspection if blue enough. I have now replaced my bulbs in the last three Passats I have owned with the Phillips X-Treme Power H7's. Simply put, they rock. Very bright, very white, and not very expensive. My favorite part of the increased lighting with these bulbs is the much improved side-light they throw...hard to quantify, but true nonetheless. A noticeable difference for when you see that lurking deer alongside your car some night.

In my research some years ago, I found an article by a lighting engineer who quite diligently and scientifically compared many aftermarket bulbs, including the leading replacements, the Osram and the Phillips. He included much hard data, and found that most offered NO more light than stock bulbs, (Sylvania) and some were even worse, except for the two mentioned above. As you will see upon receipt, the X-Treme Power bulbs even LOOK beefier than the stock bulbs. As was mentioned by on other reviewer, however, these Phillips bulbs do NOT last as long as stock bulbs, but that's the price you pay for having the superior lighting that will benefit every dark night's foray away from home. Mine have averaged 2 years of life.

Make sure to search around for a source. Try the or
