5.0 out of 5 stars Great sporty CD player for those who like to get out...
Well, I finally got my Philips CD Player and I'll give it 5 out of 5 stars...almost. It is somehow "different" product compared to other brands... but that's why it's better.

Most noticeable difference is that it's CD-Rewriteable compatible. There is only one sentence about this in the manual, stating that it will play all kind of audio disks, including CD-R...

1.0 out of 5 stars Skip, Skip, Skip
This player skiped the first time that I went running with it. It comes with a running pouch so I figured it was the perfect player to go jogging with. It was not, so I am sending it back.

Well, I finally got my Philips CD Player and I'll give it 5 out of 5 stars...almost. It is somehow "different" product compared to other brands... but that's why it's better.

Most noticeable difference is that it's CD-Rewriteable compatible. There is only one sentence about this in the manual, stating that it will play all kind of audio disks, including CD-R and CD-RW. I was hoping for more information, for example explaining that CDRW disk must be finalized, etc.

Does it work? Well, it all depends on the quality of your CD-Recordable drive that you used to make those CDs. If you used older CD-R drive, most likely the CD will sound like a broken record or a century old tape. All the CDs I created using old CD-R drive did not sound right. They would not play in any other portable CD player at all, but Philips at least tried to play them, which is not a solution after all. The music would slow down or speed up constantly.

Now, all CDs that I recorded using rather newer 8x CD-R drive worked just fine. You could tell no difference from original CD. Those CDs would also play in any other CD portable player as well. So what's the big deal? I guess it plays CD-RW disks and other players can't. You record music on CDRW, finalize it, play it, then reformat the disk and record new music again... so you can reuse CDs... if that's how it works. It all depends on your CD-Recordable drive. You cannot play CD-RW in most home or car stereo CD players but here you supposedly can.

Well, besides that, the player looks cool, great colors, great case. It doesn't have that boring look like other regular portables and it's not as fancy as other sport players. It is rather thicker than other models but it is a sport CD player after all... they are like that.

It has a cool lock, it has rubber plugs in openings, splash proof, it recharges batteries, it's well made, it won't break right away. It plays only for 6 hours in Power Safe Mode with regular batteries, so get the Alkaline batteries for 18 hours playback. It will even recharge them for you.

Oh, and it has nice and comfortable headphones that will never come out, and oh, there is the sports pouch as well,a nice addition.

The sound is OK, but the 3 stage Dynamic Bass Boost creates a small recognizable noise for some music, about the same with other products for that price. I would love to have a remote and alkaline batteries included in the package, for whatever added cost.

So overall, it's almost perfect depending on your needs. Don't try to find it in stores, just get it online. I couldn't find it anywhere in NYC, so I got in on Amazon. I would highly recommended it to everyone, especially to those who like the sporty look and enjoy spending their time outdoors. Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars *Worked okay for 8 months ONLY, September 2, 2001
By A Customer

I bought this player in Jan'01. My only complaints upon receiving it was, the sound and the in-ear BUD headphones. The sound is never loud even when it's turned to the maximum level, no matter what headphones you use. The headphones hurt my ears and died in June. Then, recently (August '01) I discovered that because the headphone jack moves, the sound goes in and out. BAD. For example--I have the CD player in my backpack, playing a CD and if the headphone plug moves, which it does, it interrupts the sound. At first I thought it was my headphones, but no its the machine. All in all I'm disappointed. Great look, handy handle loop, bad earphones, LOW SOUND, and wobbly headphone jack that kills sound. My advice, check out other machines first that is unless you like a machine that only works for 8 months.

2.0 out of 5 stars Stopped working after 1 year, May 24, 2002

I've had this CD player for a year sitting on my desk in my office when it suddently stopped working. The player now skids even without any shaking or movement and it is impossible to hear a track properly. I tried changing CDs but to no advantage. I suspect that it is poorly built and I am currently looking for a replacement. I will try with a SONY. It worked nicely before but the short life-span makes it a big no no.

1.0 out of 5 stars not worth the money, July 8, 2001

This may be a snazzy cd player, but if your looking for good to great sound quality, don't waste your money. Also, the headphones provided were discomforting to my ears. The jogging case is too small, and when carrying the cd player in it, it is pretty heavy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great Philips product, June 11, 2000

I was very satisfied with this player from day one. The fairly low price and quality is comperable to the high priced & more well known portables. The neoprene pouch is a great idea. All sport models should come with one, standard.

Sound quality is lousy. I've tried 3 different head phones, but I can't get this thing to sound any louder. New batteries don't bring up the sound either. It's just a crappy player, so don't buy it.

The sound quality is excellent. However, it does skip a little while jogging. The belt and pouch provided is a bit clumsy.

3.0 out of 5 stars At Amazon Price Good Value for money., July 29, 2002

Pros:As the title goes,Carrying pouch,Bass Extension,Sound stage,Power save feature, ruggedness, even at brisk walking does not skip with the ESP off.

Cons:Controls not easily accessable while in carrying case.Being a sport's model the head phone comfort level is unsatisfactory.

Conclusion: Baiscally at this price I persume one can tolerate a bit of inconvience as to the player but the headphones do need to be replaced or upgraded.
