Good FM, Bad AM, Overall slightly disapointing,
This review is from: Philips AE1505 Portable Radio (Electronics)
Why can't anyone make a good solid, old-school, transistor radio anymore? I wanted a nice handheld radio for ball games and listening to at my desk at work. I mostly wanted it for AM, and thus I'm disapointed in the reception and overall sound quality. I have a number of older transistors from the 70's and early 80's, and the quality of the older radios were so much better. The older ones are solid, have rich sounding speakers and have just an overall nice feel. Radios today are cheap, flimsy and have an "echo-ee" kind of sound. I guess I'll just have to stick to the oldies, but goodies. On the positive side, the FM reception seemed to be ok. I also liked the color scheme and the look of the design, just not the feel of the materials. ... so if you just want a little radio for listening to around the house, or wherever, then maybe you'll like it. I like the little "swing arm" handle, that is kinda cool.

good pocket radio, but some flaws,
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips AE1505 Portable Radio (Electronics)
For the price, this is a good pocket radio with decent sound quality, but there are a few setbacks. FM reception is good except in strong areas where it's better at picking up interference from strong stations. This suprised me, because my Philips boom box has teriffic FM reception with no interference. AM reception is ok, but could be better. It's not as sensitive as others, but since I rarely use AM, this isn't a big deal. One disadvantage is the antenna, which pulls straight up and down, and can't be moved from side to side to improve reception. Also, when it is down, the tip of it is almost flush with the top of the radio, making it hard to grasp it to pull it out. The large slide rule dial is easy to read, but it lacks some numbers. There are only 4 on the AM scale and on FM there's no 100. It goes from 96 to 104, making fine tuning in between that range difficult. The radio itself is also a little larger and heavier than many others. There's a flip out carry handle on the back, which I'm not crazy about- I prefer a carry strap instead. Overall it's a good pocket radio providing its minor setbacks don't bother you.

Your basic radio!,

This review is from: Philips AE1505 Portable Radio (Electronics)
For anyone looking for a good, reliable, basic radio. This Philips radio is the one. It is smaller than most and comes with a headphone jack so it is really portable. It also has great reception because it has the telescopic antenna.
