We use the 3-in-1 sterilizer twice a day (morning and evening) for 2 months now.
It is easy to use, specious enough to contain all the bottles, nipples and pump components we use throughout the day. It is also quick and appears to do a good job.

After three weeks of using the product an odd thing happened -- my baby rejected a bottle but would accept a different one. The situation repeated the next day. I sniffed the bottle and it had a strange, pretty bad odor. At first I though these were leftovers of soap left in the bottle. But no -- it was the sterilizer itself. Since my husband was in charge of cleaning the bottles and setting the sterilizer on it took me a while to figure it out. When I checked the sterilizer I learned that the heating element at the bottom of the apparatus is covered with rust. Moreover, the rust goes through the pores in the white plastic bottom compartment and it would not get off with just a regular dish washing brush. I had to clean these pores with q-tips (this took forever!) taking out the small black pieces. The bad odor is now history. Since then, we carefully wash and drain the heating element and the bottom of the compartment after each use. The rust is still there -- just not giving bad taste to the baby bottle. I would, however expect it not to get rusty at the first place! My husband says he followed instructions to the letter in terms of amount of water to pore in etc.

We purchased this sterilizer after seeing the benefits of sterilizing baby's toys, bottles, veggies using the "baby bullet" sterilizer that came with the baby bullet system. Clearly their sterilizer/steamer was meant for veggies as it doesn't have the capacity or stamina for continuous use. Almost every time I buy something from amazon, I read a few good reviews, but then I'll read as many bad reviews as I can. Many of the bad reviews have to do with the unit malfunctioning or developing a bad smell after some time. We purchased it anyway due to the affordability, but we were always wary of any possible smell. I am pleased to report that after a year of use, we still have the original and It's still in use now! I just put a round of sippy cups through it not 10 minutes ago! I usually check it for a smell, but after a year, we only had that issue once, then we learned a valuable lesson: even the filtered water in the refrigerator is better than distilled or even nursery water! Let me explain why: distilled and nursery water, unless it specifically states otherwise, usually has something added to it to either add taste or to make sure it stays sterile. We have a drinking water dispenser in our fridge that uses a PUR 3 stage filter. We quickly discovered that if we use this water or nursery water with no taste added, the sterilizer stayed odor-free. We've been extremely pleased with it's performance and has continued to work just as it did when it first came! Thanks to our dilligence and water savvy, we are pleased with the product! My only reason for a 4 star review is that I wish the upper basket had more places to fit more items like sippy straws, or earlier, we used Playtex bottles that had 5 parts. More room or extra surfaces would make it easier to ensure a good sterilization for all parts of these bottles or cups.

This is a must have baby item for me. I use this sterilizer multiple times per day for bottles, nipples, pacifiers, and pump parts. Saves me so much time compared to boiling method and way less expensive than buying several microwave bags. It does take up a considerable amount of counter space - think 2 2-liter bottles standing next to each other.

Regarding the "rust" that several people comment on. Your machine did not corrode overnight - you dumped milk sugars on a hot plate, now they are caramelized (just like cooking). The instruction manual addresses this - 2 parts vinegar in 8 parts water soaking in the hot plate for about 1 hour and the "rust" wipes right off. As for the plastic base that can also get some of the brown stain - fill sink with same ratio of water and vinegar and let soak for 15'. I wash/wipe the hot plate with water until the vinegar smell is gone, I just put the other plastic parts in the dishwasher to rinse off any remaining vinegar solution. So far I have not noticed a foul odor or change in my baby taking bottles indicating foul taste or leftover solution.

After one month of use the sterilizer is all rusty . What Damage could cause cleaning a baby bottle with oxide water? I find it extremely incredible selling a product that can affect the health of babies. Seriously hope it is removed soon from the market.

We are first-time parents and had always heard the stories of just boiling baby bottles and accessories. We jumped at the chance to try out this product.

PROS:
------
1. Holds A LOT! We've been using the 5 and 9ounce Avent bottles and you can fit about 8 bottles in the bottom container and the rest of the parts in the top. Also, my wife has about 6-sets of Medela breast pump "horns" and accessories; in a separate load, we can fit all of her parts and more.
2. Seems to be about 10 minutes or so to get up to steam
3. For a small load, you can use just the 'Top' container

CONS:
-------
1. The very first time I tried to use this, the on/off button would keep 'popping' back to the off position. I have to push the button at a downward angle and to the left in order to turn it on. After 4 months, we are used to it, but it is just an unfortunate quality issue. Our brother-in-law bought the same machine after seeing ours and his on/off button works properly.
2. The heating element design could definitely be improved. If you leave the storage containers overnight, the steam-condensation on the parts will leak water back onto the metal heating element and it will turn to a nasty rust. [You can run a cycle with vinegar to clean it though] The heating element is part of the base of the machine, which is somewhat heavy and attached to the power cord. This is another bad design because, depending on how far your sink is, you have to unplug this everytime, carry the heavy base to the sink to empty it (or use up a bunch of paper towels or kitchen towels to dry it) to keep it from rusting. That being said, why is it rusting...bad design. They could have just used stainless-steel, like my super hot-water maker machine does (that will never rust). Also, they could have made a pull-out tray for the water for the steam so that you don't have to continually unplug the heavy base and move it around. Is that worth 2 stars?? Well, use this for 4 months for a newborn and you'll wish this had a better design!
3. The machine has a Red/Warning indicator and then a Green/Check light, but that doesn't mean Green means Go, it means it will stay green for 6 minutes while it cools down. Even once it cools down, the parts are still very hot to touch. You'll figure this out the first time you reach in and grab a hot part, but again, this could have been designed better. Like Red means stop and leave it red for the full 10 minutes and don't illuminate the Green Light until the interior temps have dropped (or blink a yellow warning light to let you know it's done steaming, and you can reach in there at your own risk!)

Overall, we were simply hit with a bad first impression of the faulty on/off button and it wasn't until a good month of using this that we determined, "Ya know, this device could have been better thought out...needs functionality improvements." We think 3 stars is fair for this product after extensive usage over 4 months time.

I'm a mother of newborn twins and used this sterilizer for only one month. I use Dr. Brown's 4 oz and 8 oz bottles and would sterilize bottles/accessories 3-4 times a day. After a few weeks, the heat tray started to rust and the bottle nipples were turning brown. I followed the directions exactly by drying each part of the sterilizer (including the heat tray) after each use, but the rust would always return after the next use. There was also a white, watery film at the bottom of the heat tray after each use. I'm assuming it's the dye "melting off" from the accessories rack or inside the container.

While the accessories tray at the top is nice for the smaller parts, this sterilizer does not accommodate 8 oz bottles. I had to lie the Dr. Brown's 8 oz on its side which did not allow the steam to get inside the bottle very well.

The bottles and accessories never air dried inside the sterilizer. Everything would remain wet and I had to manually dry each bottle and accessory or put it on a drying rack.

Finally, after one month of use, it stopped working. The sterilizer wouldn't turn on anymore.

I am disappointed. After every use there is a rust on the heating thing. Smells bad and I have to cleane it every time I use it. Smells bad and if I don't clean it all the bottles start to smell too. I wish I wouldn't buy it. It is supposed to make thing easy, but it is not

I purchased Dr. Brown's Electric Steam Sterilizer before, but it died within six month; I got another one, it died within two weeks, so I think I'll give anther brand for a try, that's why I purchased this one. I read the reviews carefully, and it seems the odor problem mostly coming from the water and rust from the usage, but I was wrong. After I un-package this item, it has a very strong plasticy odor. I rinsed it, and steamed with no bottles to get rid of the odor several times, the bad smell still exist. It's not usable! I'm wondering if I should just rinse and dry and leave it open for a few week before using it. Very bad experience, strongly against buying it. The Dr. Brown one had some electric problems, but never has any bad odor to start with, nor any smells after a few months usage. Very disappointing.

The Philips steam sterilizer is great. Since it is electric it is better and more accurate than your microwave. With the microwave you have to know the wattage and how much water to place. I have used bags and containers to steam but somehow I end up messing up a bottle or too. The sterilizer not only fits Avent series bottles but other brands as well. You can fit a few other items inside as well. This is a worry free steamer sterilizer that won't ruin your baby bottles or other baby essentials.

The steamer Philips AVENT 3-in-1 Electric Steam Sterilizer does its job well. It sterilizes all the components of the pump, bottles, pacifiers etc. It is pretty fast, easy to use and really spacious.

I am really dissapointed that Philips would create a device that collects rust so easy.
I am cleaning the steamer after each use making sure that i drain all the watter and i allways keep the water at the correct level and it still collecting rust.

I would not recommend it to others for this reason.

UPDATE

We used the sterilizer for almost a month, and because the above issues i decided to contact Philips. The customer service was outstanding and they offered to send a new sterilizer for free.
Their explanation was that the water that i was using was to hard and minerals were deposited on the bottom.

With the new sterilizer i decided to use distilled water. Unfortunately the same thing has happened. It collected rust although i am drying the plate after each use and am using distilled water.
For this reason i am still giving this product 1 star.
