3.0 out of 5 stars Works great (5 stars) until it breaks (1 star)
I purchased the Avent Isis pump, after having my first baby in Feb. 2002 and was amazed at how comfortable it was to use. Shortly before returning to work, I decided to also invest the money (!!!) in a Medela Pump-In-Style (a little harder to use, not hands free, but faster, easier to clean and better milk storage) because while the Isis pump worked well, it would take me...

I have 2 of these pumps and they are fantastic. I find it to be easy and efficient to use...and I've been using it for over a year. It is THE BEST hand pump on the market. I ALSO have a Medela Pump N Style double electric pump...but I must say that the Avent Isis works just as well. I alternate between the two types of pumps depending on my schedule. I keep my Pump In Style at work...as it is faster to pump both sides at once...but I use the Avent Isis at home and on weekends...or if I am going to be away from the office for business travel, tradeshows, or off site meetings. It is compact and small and easy to pack for the day or a trip, etc. It is comfortable...you have a lot of control over the suction...and I can express just as much milk with this hand pump as I can with my electric pump.

All of the Avent products are fantastic. I can't recommend them more highly. My biggest advice to anyone looking into breast pumps is NOT to buy ANYTHING sold by formula manufacturers...they do not care if you are successful breastfeeding. Avent and Medela products are wonderful. This is the absolute best pump for the money. My friend Christine used hers for over a year while working...it was the only pump she had...and she did great with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surpassed my expectations!, May 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips AVENT Isis On The Go Set (Baby Product)
I tried several "NEW" electric/battery designs before I found this manual set. It is the best! I was worried about going back to work and having to pump every 2-3 hours and make so much noise in the restroom. Yet I was also concerned about the length of time I thought a manual pump would take. This back-to-work set was the answer to both of those concerns! I made sure my milk supply was well established (it only took three weeks for me before I started pumping). I was able to pump 4-6 oz in about 5 minutes and up to 9+ in under 10 minutes (and absolutely silently!) The washable breast pads were great for night, but I used super thin ones during the day. The pump is easy and fast to assemble, and easy to clean. I stored the bottles right at my desk and the ice packs kept them cold all afternoon. And now that I am not nursing anymore, the two 4 ounce bottles and two 9 ounce bottles that are included with the set are always in use for his formula. He won't drink from any other nipple! And the carry case - I use that for a lunch tote with the ice packs! A GREAT value!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I've been very successful with AVENT products!, September 4, 2001

I am a first time mom to a newborn who has problems latching on when I try to breastfeed, mainly because he has a tongue thrust. I resorted to pumping to help maintain my milk supply and continue giving my son the benefits of breast milk. This back to work set is definitely worth the price! I also have a Medela Pump In Style and both products work just about the same, although the Avent Isis is definitely quieter. I can express the same amount of milk as I would using the Medela Pump In Style - usually about 4-6 oz. in 5-8 minutes. The set packs into a discreet "lunch bag," so you can feel comfortable taking it to work and keeping your milk cold thanks to the freezer paks. I also like the fact that you can actually see the milk spray into the funnel. I think the secret to this successful product are the petals that help to stimulate the areola when you pump - very similar to your baby on the breast (this also helps maintain milk supply). Although I wouldn't recommend this product for daily/constant use - I know most moms will get frustrated at having to use a manual pump and of course dual pumping is always better, (the Medela Pump In Style or other hospital grade pump is recommended for that) I have been successful using the Avent Isis for every feeding. I am so grateful to Avent for all their products!

5.0 out of 5 stars Save $$ over electric pumps, March 14, 2003

My baby was in the NICU right after birth for 5 days and I needed to pump exclusively to get my milk established. They provided me with a deluxe electric double pump which worked well. I was told my supply couldn't be established/maintained with my manual pump at home, so I went home with a hospital rental while my baby stayed in the hospital. When it was time for him to come home, I contemplated whether or not to keep renting the electric pump; I had received this ISIS pump as a shower gift and I thought I'd try it before deciding what to do. Well, I was shocked how well this pump worked. It is so comfortable to use and doesn't tire your hand pumping. In the same time it took me to double pump (15 minutes) I got the same amount of milk using the manual one breast at a time! I ended up returning the electric pump and didn't at all feel uneasy about maintaining milk supply. This pump works as well, if not better than the electric pump and costs so much less!! This is my 4th child, I've tried other manual pumps as well as battery operated ones in the past, but none compare to this pump. My only qualm about this system is that the nipple rings and nipples for feeding are substantially bigger than the standard nipples/size for bottles, so you are committed to using only their brand with their bottles (the bottles are nicely shaped and easy to hold). My baby had a hard time breast feeding, so we had to bottle feed for a while and he couldn't get the hang of their bottle nipple so I had to pour off my milk into another type of bottle system to feed him.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect manual pump, October 10, 2001

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Philips AVENT Isis On The Go Set (Baby Product)
I got this pump because I was tired of hand expressing whenever I needed to leave my baby for a short time. This pump is a godsend .Being that I never used a electric I cant compare the two, however I do know this pump is very comfortable & expresses milk quickly .I can get 4-9 oz out of one breast in 3-7 minutes.I express milk daily & store it for later use.The silicone petals produce a letdown as if my baby were nursing. The kit itself is very handy for travel.I keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in my kit.Just the other day I was pumping in a dressing room while shopping. It is very discreet. You just have to purchase two extra gel packs to keep the milk cool, but most hospitals give them away with thier going home kit,so needless to say I didn't have to purchase anything extra.

When I was exploring the world of breast pumps by reading every review I could find and talking to anyone who has pumped within the last 3 years I came to the conclusion that the Isis Back-To-Work pump was the one for me. I am an active person who likes to camp, hike and mountain bike so I am not always in a position to find an electric outlet. I am also someone who will not use an item that is uncomfortable or inconvenient. The Isis Back-To-Work set comes with everything you need to pump away from home and get your baby's precious food supply back home safe and unspoiled. I also find the pump to be painless and easy to use. For me this was a wise purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to continue breastmilk, THIS I would recommend, February 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips AVENT Isis On The Go Set (Baby Product)
Due to some problems I am not able to breastfeed. But I wanted my son to have the benefits of breastmilk. I've been renting the Lactina, hospital grade pump and have been using that for a month, now. Going back to work and pumping as often as I need to (every feeding) I was looking at spending close to $300 on a double breast pump. But I've been using the Avent pump and LOVE it. In LESS time than a hospital grade pump I can empty both breasts and store them easily in the little case. The petals on the funnel stimulate more parts of the areola, I think. You can SEE that more milk is being expressed than with the hospital grade pump. And it's easy and onehanded as opposed to many other manual two handed, one breast pumps. I was so worried that we'd have to switch the baby to formula when I went back to work but now we won't!!! Not to mention that where I work it's not so convenient to have both breasts exposed for a double pump when you can be more discreet with the Isis pump. (My work has a tendency to have people let themselves into locked offices). I'd definitely recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a great breast pump!, May 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips AVENT Isis On The Go Set (Baby Product)
I have used an electric breast pump before and I have found that I much prefer the Isis. It is comfortable, quiet and very easy to use and clean. I get just as much, if not more, milk out of this than I did with the electric. Your hand gets a workout, the only drawback, but at least I don't have the annoying motor noise when I pump at the office.

The only other drawback is that you have to use Avent bottles to pump. Their unique size make it impossible to pump into any other type of storage bottle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Solution for Working moms, July 6, 2001
This review is from: Philips AVENT Isis On The Go Set (Baby Product)
I bought this set after my second child was born. With the first I had used a Medela Pump in Style and hated having to lug the thing around and embarrassed at the attention the sounds of the pump drew from people in the office.I'm glad I made the switch. While I did pump slightly less milk than I did with the electric pump, I felt a million times better throughout the process. I could sneak into an unused room and read a book while I silently took care of business. Portability was a big plus for me as well. I could store the milk in the lunchroom fridge without fear that it might be mistakenly used. I would recommend this pump to any and every nursing mother.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works great (5 stars) until it breaks (1 star), May 28, 2002
This review is from: Philips AVENT Isis On The Go Set (Baby Product)
I purchased the Avent Isis pump, after having my first baby in Feb. 2002 and was amazed at how comfortable it was to use. Shortly before returning to work, I decided to also invest the money (!!!) in a Medela Pump-In-Style (a little harder to use, not hands free, but faster, easier to clean and better milk storage) because while the Isis pump worked well, it would take me 15-20 minutes per breast to pump a total of 8-9 oz.

I continued to use the Isis for short outings or as a backup. Until the pump cracked at the neck, where it connects to the bottle. Before I decided to check the B-R-US customer reviews, I thought it may have been 'operator' error, but apparently it is a defect. I have yet to find the time to contact them for a replacement/refund (which will probably crack again).

One tip to anyone else that has both these products - the Isis petal insert fits on the Medela pump too.
