Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Ideal for active CD listeners, the Philips AX501617 personal CD player features fourth-generation, 45-second electronic skip protection for continuous music play and up to five times faster shock recovery than conventional systems have. Additional convenience features include CD-R/RW compatibility and power-saving technology that extends battery playing time to 22 hours with two regular AA alkaline batteries.

Aside from being versatile, this CD player delivers topnotch sound quality using a one-bit digital-to-analog converter and digital dynamic bass boost. CD playback features include 30-track programmable, shuffle, repeat, and intro scan modes, as well as CD music search that searches the CD at high speed while still producing low-volume sound so you know exactly when to stop.

Auto power-off, hold, and resume are also featured in the AX501617, along with an easy-to-read LCD screen that shows CD track, time, bass, CD functions, and battery status. Over-the-head stereo headphones and a car-kit are also included.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment, April 11, 2002
I used to have what i believe was the older version of this model (the top was completely opaque and the buttons were small circles). I was very very pleased with that one, until i lost it. This one, on the other hand, couldn't even compare. The resume resumes from where ever the player wants, not necessarily where you left off. Sometimes, it simply refuses to read a track, but spends minutes trying. The unit skips for no apparent reason, even when i'm not moving it. The final kicker was when i dropped it (no more than 2 feet), the top came off, and even though i was able to snap it back in with no apparent physical damage, it no longer works at all...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 22 hours, November 14, 2001
By A Customer
The sound on this baby is great and it runs for 22 hours compared to my old one which would only run 6 hours. Great for cross-country trips. The car kit is excellent. GREAT DEAL!!!

I've bought this discman primarily for it's car kit - it was a lot cheaper solution for listening CDs in the car, than "real" car CD player. It works perfectly, even on bumpy roads with ESP turned on.

I like to make my own CDs with favourite songs, so I record them all on 1-6x Teac CD-R. Philips has no problems whatsoever with those CDs. Also, I dropped it few times (2-3ft), and though you can clearly see scratches (on the transparent plastic cover), it works fine. Though, it looks pretty fragile, so be careful.

The only problem I've encountered is postion of Next and Previous (or F Fwd and F Bwd) buttons, which are "linked" and very near to Play and Stop buttons. So, instead of skipping the track, you could return it to the beginning, and when you drive, it's not really healthy to look at the CD.

Anyway, price is fine for what you get, and if I had to buy again - I would buy this player.
