3.0 out of 5 stars Beware of the warranty
This item worked beautifully for 5 months - then the tape stopped working. I emailed VCT Electronics and they did not reply and as it was over the 90 days Amazon could not warranty the machine. Phillips will not honor their 1 year manufacturers warranty as it is a model made in Thailand, for sale in Thailand. If you purchase this - BEWARE!

This review is from: Philips AZ-1047 - MP3 CD/Radio/ Cassette Player with AM/FM Radio - CD/CD-R/RW Sound machine with Stereo Cassette Player (Electronics)
All the features work well in this tiny machine. Sound quality is good and we like the manual dials and switches rather than digital/automated features because we feel it gives us better control. One drawback is the lack of volume control on the remote, but if you have the player set up the way you want it before you play, this shouldn't be a problem. If you use this in America, MAKE SURE the 110V / 220V switch on the bottom of the unit is set to 110V. Otherwise the CD player won't work. (This is in the manual, but not as obvious as you would expect.) This comes with a dual plug so it's ready to use in countries that use 220V (like in Europe) or 110 V (like in the USA).

4.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive solution to MP3 and cassette playing, September 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Philips AZ-1047 - MP3 CD/Radio/ Cassette Player with AM/FM Radio - CD/CD-R/RW Sound machine with Stereo Cassette Player (Electronics)
I had a Panasonic mini-stereo that had excellent sound and features but a short life span. So I've been looking for a substitute stereo to play MP3 discs (which I now have many, made with my PC) and cassette tapes. Guess what? There isn't much out there! I can get a refurbished Panasonic like my old one (or get the old one repaired), RCA makes a unit and Colby makes a unit, and there are a few others out there, but I haven't been thrilled by their product reviews. I decided to try this Phillips from Amazon since the price was reasonable. It's not a great stereo but does what it advertises. I've had no problems with MP3 discs, tapes, regular CDs, or radio. However it lacks features such as tone control (although there is a bass boost button which helps slightly), NO EARPHONE JACK or remote control.

The controls for CD and tape play seem to be backward. By that I mean the controls for the CD are near the tape mechanism and the controls for the tape are near the CD mechanism. That will just take a little time for me to get used to. The playing of a MP3 disc seems fine, I can change the "album" (directory in computer terms) with the pressing of a button, and choose the track I want to hear. There are several repeat and program functions also. I wish the display window was LED so I could see it in the dark like my old unit, but alas, it is LCD. The radio works okay for an in apartment experience, all I need is a local AM station anyway. You can also record to tape from CD or radio if you wish.

I don't plan to use the batteries (6 "C" cells) but will stick to the AC power cord provided (it was set to 110 when it arrived). I can't speak about reliability or life expectancy, in this day and age, it seems must products are doomed to die within a couple of years. I am willing to accept that. This unit does what I need it to for now and if I have problems, I will report them here at a later date. For a simple portable and inexpensive solution to play cassette tapes (which I prefer for audio books) and MP3 discs, I can recommend this unit.

I do a lot of project work around the house and like to listen to books on tape / cd while im at it.
this little thing has been perfect so far, I have not used it with batteries only and do not really plan on but
sound quality is good, easy to understand, if you want to connect an ipod you have to have an extra cable (i did not want anyway). Seems well made for the price.
The picture is a little decieving as from a topview the thing is almost round (cd player is on the top which i did not get).

I bought the Tape/MP3 player for my mother, who still has cassette tapes that she wanted to play. Unfortunately, the tape player didn't work, the plastic and craftsmanship of the Sound Machine was horrible. It was very flimsy and the tape player didn't open. We were afraid to pry it open for fear of breaking it. It was definitely not worth what I paid for it.

after only a few uses. I did my best to troubleshoot the problem but no luck. So I can't recommend that you buy this brand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, Basic Box for a Fair Price, October 29, 2010
This review is from: Philips AZ-1047 - MP3 CD/Radio/ Cassette Player with AM/FM Radio - CD/CD-R/RW Sound machine with Stereo Cassette Player (Electronics)
Last February was one of the worst of my life. My job was in jeopardy, my DVD died, my boombox died, and then I ordered a (different) boom box from Amazon, which worked for EXACTLY one hour, and then never worked again. I was too burned to even contemplate buying boom box #3.

This August, I got over it. I sat down to read all the reviews for portable CD/MP3 players under $100 (this comes with a radio too, but I won't use it), and this one seemed to be well liked by a lot of people. I ordered it, and have been happy with it. It took me a little bit of fiddling to figure out how to turn it on, but once I knew, it was no problem (and I am not that clever with electronics, so it may very well seem more obvious to you than it did to me).

I use this player at work, and there is a fair amount of human traffic, which is why I didn't want to invest heavily in a high-quality machine. People knock things over now and then. You try to be careful, but it happens.

So what I am saying is, this is not a state-of-the-art sound system. If that is what you want, sorry, but you will have to shell out a good deal more. But this is a basic, reliable player. You put the CD or MP3 in, hit the button, and it works every time. The whole room can hear it quite well if you turn the sound up a bit. It is lightweight, which is important to me, because I am arthritic and prefer to be able to cart my own stuff around. It is a no-nonsense buy for a product that is not luxurious, but that does fit the bill for a price that won't hurt.

I have no idea about the battery life, because it's always plugged in when I use it. I gave it 3 stars for battery life because "I don't know" wasn't available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Working beautifully, December 21, 2011

The Philips MP3/CD/Radio/Cassette Player works beautifully. It's great to make an MP3 CD with all of my favorites and listen to music for hours without having to change CDs. The tape player and radio also work well although I don't use them as much. All in all a good purchase. The only drawback that I have found is that the buttons for the CD were not all that intuitive. (In other words, read the manual!)

Philips AZ=1047=MP3

Years ago when I purchased a portable player it would last foy YEARS. In fact I still have eight tract players from the 70s that still function perfectly;

Do not Buy any thing from Philips, as you are throwing your money away.

If I had used this CD playuer 25 times that is an over estimation. It started to skip with my CDs about one month ago. I thought it was the CD's defect.

but no. It was the Philips player. The bottom line they claim the warranty has expired on their defective equipment.

This item was not cheap.
