The Philips AZ1007 is a portable CD radio cassette recorder that is simple to operate and performs quite well for a boombox in its price range. It boasts dynamic bass boost as well as CD synchro start recording, which enables you to record from CD to tape with the touch of a button. Judged by the sturdy construction of everything from the oversized volume knob to the speaker grills, this unit was designed to be used.

While the Philips AZ1007 is not the fanciest boombox on the market, all its major functions are easy to figure out and performed adequately in our tests. The mechanical (not digital) tuner was tight and easy to adjust, and we didn't even need to put the antenna up to get clear FM reception on the AM/FM radio. The CD player loaded quickly, even in shuffle mode, and the mechanical tape deck functions worked well.

The sound that the Philips AZ1007 produced satisfied us for a unit of this size and price range, but it was not outstanding. Our main issue with this model's output was that the speakers slightly distorted sound at high volume. Also, the dynamic bass boost seemed like a volume boost more than anything else, and did not enhance the low frequencies enough. With the volume cranked all of the way up, the extra bass primarily increased distortion.

If you're looking for a well-featured, relatively small, portable stereo, this boombox will suit you nicely. If, on the other hand, you seek a very loud or bass-heavy portable stereo, we encourage you to look to other more substantial models. --David Lavin

It includes a ferroceptor AM antenna and a telescopic FM antenna. The stereo cassette deck plays back recorded tapes and records from the built-in CD player or radio tuner. For sound performance, the Philips AZ100717 features 4-inch full-range speakers with metal mesh grilles. A stereo headphone jack is included for private listening. The two-digit LCD displays the CD track numbers and play modes such as shuffle, repeat, and CD program. Dynamic bass boost enhances low tones, and an electronic circuit monitors the input signal to ensure accurate, distortion-free recording. Does not sound at all like a cheap boombox! This is in the price range with those generic boomboxes, but this boombox sounds about 100 times better. Even though it doesn't have tweeters, the sound clarity is still great. The analog tuner is much better than many digital tuners, and picks up all local stations. Philips makes the only boomboxes I've tried that can pick up my favorite alternative rock station.

This boombox is, price-wise, right down there with the generic ones, but the sound is 100 times better. This boombox looks cool and has great sound clarity. FM reception is great, crisp with an almost cd-quality sound. In my opinion, the best part of it is it gets my favorite alternative rock station that other boomboxes can't get.

My 8 year old son bought this CD player for himself based on looks and price, and he's been very happy with it. It's easy to use, sound quality is very good, and it is priced well.
