I've always had a good experience with Philips products and this one is no exception. The sound volume leaves a little to be desired, and the side controls can be hard to maneuver. Overall, though, it's a very good machine. Sound quality is excellent, battery life is modest, display visibility is OK. Connection ports are solid. In comparison with other players in its class from brands such as Sony (which are generally more expensive) it's a sturdy player offering great value.

5.0 out of 5 stars a very good portable cd player, July 24, 2002

This review is from: Philips AZ9225 Rechargeable Personal CD Player with Anti Skip and Optical Line Out (Electronics)
This a very good portable CD player. I previously owned the Philips AZ911117 model, which I loved, but it is, unfortunately, no longer with me. I dropped the AZ911117 on it's head and now it's dead :o(. It really was a bad spill...

That particular CD player (Philips AZ911117) was so freakin' tough, it really surprised me. I must have dropped it (in the year and a half that I owned it) at least a dozen times. Also, it skipped maybe about 6 times during that 1 1/2 years I had it. That to me is a good sign of a quality portable CD player.

After the incident, I did some serious searching for another portable CD player that was comparable to the Philips AZ911117. I had learned that this particular line of Philips CD players are being phased out for newer lines, namely the eXpanium series. So I bought the newest eXpanium model hoping that it would be like the AZ911117. It was not. The PHILIPS eXpanium EXP201 Portable MP3-CD Player skipped constantly (any kind of movement, including walking, made it skip), had long delays when searching and switching tracks, drained brand new batteries within hours of use, speeded up the sound of the music, had poorly designed placement of buttons and battery comparpartment, and so on... Fyi--I tried the same CD that I had these problems with in 2 other players and it was fine. The EXP201 was awful and not worth the hassle. After some thought, I decided to search the internet to find my "old-school" Philips AZ911117 that I had no problems with for my next purchase. I found and purchased this model, the Philips AZ922517, on ... site and I have yet to be disappointed.

This player is great. My only gripe is that the earphones are huge (excellent sound quality though). The power saving feature really does work and you even get rechargeable batteries with it! Bonuses: it's the same size as the AZ911117 and I really like the metal cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great CD player, July 17, 2002

This review is from: Philips AZ9225 Rechargeable Personal CD Player with Anti Skip and Optical Line Out (Electronics)
I started out with a Classic brand CD player, and it wasn't all that great. So I found this one, and decided to get it. #1 it was good looking, #2 it had a lot of stuff that came with it, and #3 it was Philips brand, which I've heard is a company of great products.

The CD player itself is pretty good. It looks nice. The headphones that come with it are okay, but I only use them occasionally. It's cool how they fold up so they take up less space when you are packing them. The remote is awesome, I always use it when I'm jogging or walking or whatever. It's very handy. The rechargeable batteries are okay as well, but they do take a lot of time to charge and they don't last forever.

The ESP works very well, as does the DBB. The volume on the CD player is great, but with the remote you'd maybe have to turn it up more to be able to hear the same volume as you would without it.

This is an overall great CD player.

1.0 out of 5 stars ESP distorts high frequenices!, April 22, 2001
This review is from: Philips AZ9225 Rechargeable Personal CD Player with Anti Skip and Optical Line Out (Electronics)
The new technology of powersaving 45-sec ESP Philips has come up in their CD-players is also the bane of their AZ9*** models.

The ESP actually distorts the high frequencies! I played Christina Aguilera's "Genie In a Bottle" and right at the starting part of the song, you could already hear the highly distorted sounds. Of course, these sounds are not present when I disabled the ESP. It is a nuisance that I have to disable the ESP everytime I start the player. (The player, surprisingly, is able to take quite a bit of shock even if ESP is off)

For the sound quality (ESP off), the bass enhancement is good (2 steps), however, the treble seemed a bit lacking. Panasonic CD players seemed to have a brighter sound with their more acute treble sounds. The max volume output was also too soft.

Therefore, this model and similar models (AZ 9***) are not recommended if you want good and consistent sound quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great CD player, July 17, 2002

I decided to get this CD player because:

1. I needed a new one
2. It looked great
3. It had a lot of cool features like the remote and the headphones
4. Philips is a great brand for electronics.

The CD player does look very cool, nice colors. And it has really great stuff that comes with it. I liked the remote, because it's great to jog or walk with. The headphones are okay. It's really neat how they fold up so they take up less space and have less chance of getting damaged when packed into a suitcase. The rechargeable batteries are ok, but they take a while to charge and they don't last long, only worth a few recharges.

The sound quality is great. However, I noticed that with the remote in use, the volume wasn't as great. The only problem was that it didn't get as loud with the remote as it did without it. But it wasn't that big of a problem.

The ESP works great. I jog with this CD player all the time and I have no problems with skipping. The DBB is pretty cool too, but it doesn't make that huge of a difference in sound quality.

A really great CD player, I highly recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing sound, August 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips AZ9225 Rechargeable Personal CD Player with Anti Skip and Optical Line Out (Electronics)
I tried this player because I've owned another Philips player (AZ7594 - discontinued) that is still unmatched as far as sound quality, controls, and accessories go. This player seemed comparable on paper, but I found the sound to be lacking -i.e. the bass was not that strong, the highs were too sharp and the mids were not full. Also the volume is definitely not loud enough and distorts the sound when turned up. I would not recommend this player for anyone serious about their music quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound with Extras, October 2, 2002

The Philips AZ922517 CD player offers a lot for the money. The player provides super clear and crisp sound. And, unlike many other CD players I checked out, this one comes with a power cord and even a set of batteries! The headphones are light weight, cushy, and the head band doesn't squeeze. But it's all in the sound -- really impressive. One slight caveat -- the player seems to be made of light weight plastic so I'm hoping not to drop it or bang it too soon.

New ESP function works great. Virtually no skipping. Headphones provide excellent sound reproduction versus standard issue phones of other players. I have had no problems with connection to player. Comes with remote unit for added convenince when jogging, etc.. Have observed no loss in volume with use of remote with headphones versus no remote. Comes with rechargable batteries which provide approximately 10HR of listening time after first two full charges (allow batteries to completely discharge prior to recharging, and never store uncharged). Durable well constructed case. Faithfully reproduces music as recorded. No distortion of sound noticed at full volume on head phones or good quality portable speakers. For those without an in car CD player sound quality with cassette adapter excellent. Overall I have been very happy with this product and highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Cassical Music Listener, September 8, 2002

As a classical-music listener, high fidelity is the most important attribute of a CD player. I am happy to state that both the player and the accompanying earphones are performing admirably. Furthermore, I dropped the player twice from a four-foot hight onto the ceramic rug-covered bathroom floor, without any resulting damage.

As for the accompanying remote, while I have no need for it, I imagine that it would be very welcome to a jogger; it does seem to function properly.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good player but with its eccentricities, July 17, 2002

This review is from: Philips AZ9225 Rechargeable Personal CD Player with Anti Skip and Optical Line Out (Electronics)
I don't know if it's just the one I got, but to get stereo sound, you have to leave to the headphone jack about 1/3 of the way out. If you press it all the way in, you get sound only in one ear. So that is odd.
Despite that, it is a good machine. Handles easily, not too heavy, good sound (when you get the headphone correct). A nice display too. Headphones that come with it are very big and not practical for on the go use. However, they are good on an airplane.
Skip function is fantastic, has an easy to read face and the bass boost is nice. Batteries last a long time, even the rechargeables.
