3.0 out of 5 stars Very useful but short lived, August 5, 2010
This review is from: Philips Voice Announce/VoiceAnnounce Talking Call Waiting Caller ID with Display Screen (Electronics)
I bought the Philips SJA9191 talking caller ID box in August 2008. Functionally, it was great. We didn't use most of its features. We only wanted to hear who's calling, to know if it's worth getting up and going to the phone. For that, it was great. After a bit less than two years, though, we finally filled up its 50-number memory with the recorded names of people we wanted to talk to and "junk call" for those we didn't. (I hate to think what it would have been like if we WEREN'T on the National Do Not Call registry!) so I would have preferred that the unit have an even bigger memory.

When both of us in the household were on a conversation (on two different extensions), sometimes the one on the phone connected to the SJA9191 would be cut off, so that he could hear but not be heard. Hanging up the extension for a few seconds would clear the problem. I'm not sure of the cause, but I blame the SJA9191.

Yesterday the unit failed. It is now in a state in which whenever it has power it goes off-hook. So we can't make or receive calls while the SJA9191 is connected. Two years seems to me a very short lifespan for a piece of telephone equipment. But it's such a handy device that I'll probably get another one, either the same model or a competing brand.
