360-Degree Drinking for Easy Transition

The Natural Drinking Cup is a great first grown up drinking cup for toddlers ready to move on from traditional sippy cups or from drinking from a straw. The cup allows drinking from all around the rim, just like an adult cup. This design encourages your toddler to get used to grown up drinking.

Spill-Proof Valve Prevents Messes

This cup features a spill-proof valve that prevents waste and mess. This fast-flow valve is activated when a child's top lip presses against the lid, so milk or water only flows when your toddler is ready to drink. When the cup isn't in use, you won't have to worry about spills and messes.

Hygienic Lid Protects Cup

The Natural Drinking Cup includes a separate hygienic lid to keep the cup and its contents clean, whether at home or on the go.

Trainer Handles Encourage Independence

To encourage independent drinking, this cup has special trainer handles toddlers can easily grip.

BPA-Free Material is Dishwasher Safe

Safe for toddlers, this cup is BPA-Free and is also dishwasher safe for easy cleanup and sterilization.

I have tried dozens of different sippy, straw and trainer cups and this is the worst one so far.

My 18 month old got VERY frustrated with this cup. I tried it myself as well, and unless you really press your nose into the plate in the center of the cup, the flow is very minimal. Not only that, but I think it actually hinders the transition to a normal cup, because one of the biggest hurdles is knowing how far back to tip the cup. With this cup, you can tip it upside down, but unless you press the plate, nothing is coming out. Also, like other avent sippies, the valve is multiple pieces that should really be taken apart at each use and washed unless you want mold growing in there - even with just water. They say not to use this cup with juice either, and I think milk would really get in the nooks and crannies as well.

So at least its leakproof then, right? Sort of. It's true that it doesn't leak if the plate isn't pressed, but it doesn't take much to press the plate a little and allow a slow dribble. For that reason I wouldn't use it as an accident-proof cup for in the car or other unsupervised use anyway. A straw cup works much better for that purpose.

If you're restricting to water anyway, spend a couple weeks transitioning to a regular cup and save yourself the hassle of another unnecessary "transitional" stage. Sure, there will be some spills, but it will be over faster, and you can use a straw cup (which would still have adult applications later) for the times you need something less messy.

Most traditional sippy cups require a certain amount of suction and not all children are able to produce adequate suction. I have a 22 month old daughter who was born with a cleft palate. Due to surgical complications, she still has an open palate. Because of her open palate, she cannot drink through a straw or traditional "leak proof" sippy cup. An open cup was too uncontrolled for my daughter to start with and a traditional sippy cup with the valve removed would pour until emptied when dropped or tipped over. The Avent Natural Drinking Cup addresses these problems and has been a nice fit for my daughter. The cup is easy for her to manage, the flow is controlled, and the cup doesn't empty when tipped. I cannot give the cup 5 stars because the cup does spill a little when it is tipped and if it lands in such a way that the inside rim is pressed, it will make a mess. It's also not as easy to wash as some cups. While the cup isn't perfect, it is a great alternative cup for children who have difficulty with cups requiring suction.

So, we had high hopes for this innovative cup. We have had it for about a month. Our previous experience with other types of AVENT cups has been wonderful. They always work, leak proof and toddler resistant.

Until this one.

Sure, it looks great, and the idea is sound. In fact, the toddler loves it. The parents and day care - hate it. Why? Assembly.

Sure, it comes apart in pieces for easy cleaning. There lies the problem - what to do after the cleaning.

The silicone disk - aka valve, can be popped on either way. It only works when installed correctly. Incorrect assembly makes the cup into a "normal" cup. The silicone disk easily can be installed right-side-up or upside down. What little visual markings included is the "AVENT" brand name. but, do you install the disk with the brand name facing toward the top of the cup or the bottom? To make matters even more convoluted, you have to assemble it upside down.

To make this better, AVENT should put a notch or some other method of allowing the disk to be installed one way one. When installed incorrectly, the cup is a complete failure. Again, engineers should make the cup so that if assembled incorrectly, it should not work. That way no liquid pours out.

As for the toddler use, it's a messy cup. Be prepared for a soaking shirt. Ours like to hold the lip down and let the water flow like a personal waterfall.

And the daycare folks have asked not to include the cup in the school bag - as the workers A)have never seen one and can't figure it out and B) is too messy.

Finally, why (and this applies to all sippy cups we have found) does NO manufacture have a nice place for a sharpie name of the kid?

My 1 year old HATED sippy cups. I wasn't super excited about using them either and this cup solved our problems! My 1 year old can easily hold and use this cup. It did take a bit of work for him to figure it out without spilling some water, but in just a few days he was sipping away and can now drink out of a regular cup with just a bit of assistance. The cons: 1. This cup breaks down into 5 parts (including the cup), so if you're looking to move away from assembling and disassembling bottles this is NOT the cup for you. 2. While it is spill proof, some residual fluid stays in the top of the cup after drinking that can spill. It is only a small amount of liquid and I believe despite the design this is unavoidable and just something we've learned to deal with. We only allow our children to drink water outside of the kitchen so it hasn't been an issue. ***This is the only toddler cup you'll find in our cabinet! (NOTE: We did try the OXO Trainer cup as well but found that the 'slow flow' design was by no means slow enough to train our kiddos and we missed the no-spill feature that allowed our kiddos to drink lots of water throughout the day.)
