5.0 out of 5 stars This makes bottle cleaning so much easier!
With my first baby, I did not bother to purchase a sterilizer because I planned on breastfeeding mostly and did not think it would be worth the money to invest in a sterilizer. I thought I'd just use the big pot on the stove and boil all my bottle and breastpump parts when necessary. And that's just what I did. I saved my money. . . BUT let me just say, I melted...

5.0 out of 5 stars This makes bottle cleaning so much easier!, June 19, 2003
This review is from: Philips Avent Electric Steam Sterilizer (Baby Product)
With my first baby, I did not bother to purchase a sterilizer because I planned on breastfeeding mostly and did not think it would be worth the money to invest in a sterilizer. I thought I'd just use the big pot on the stove and boil all my bottle and breastpump parts when necessary. And that's just what I did. I saved my money. . . BUT let me just say, I melted numerous pacifiers, bottle parts, and got sick of having to worry about all the bottle/pump parts burning up or always getting them out of the pot and drying them on a clean towel on the countertop. (I pumped often to build up a good frozen supply of milk, so my pump parts were always in need of washing it seemed.) My countertop looked like a bottle factory ALL the time.

So with Baby #2, I decided to make the investment in this sterilizer. It has been absolutely wonderful! It saves time (no worrying about the pot on the stove burning up parts and bottles - I can leave the parts in the sterilizer for quite a bit of time before I have to worry about removing them) and space (my countertop stays neat).

Certainly, you ought to at least wash your bottle and pump parts in sudsy water/rinse them clean before you put them in the sterilizer. But if you're going to sterilize, you might as well get this one. It's worth the money.

My sister melted (literally melted and evaporated) 3 bottles and their counterparts while sterilizing them on the stove top recently. . . She had fallen asleep while her infant was napping (new parents can be so tired). Let's just say, she went out immediately after that incident and purchased this sterilizer and loves it.

Personally, I think this sterilizer gives me less details to worry about when I already have so many little things to worry with.

I love it and recommend it. (I do use Avent bottles and Pump-In-Style pump parts. I've also sterilized sippy cups for my two year old in this!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best choice in bottle sterilizers on the market, May 24, 2001

The Avent Steam Sterilizer takes up to 6 9oz bottles (with all the caps, nipples and rings), plus an Isis pump. Uses only 3oz of water (I use distilled water to preven scale buildup from tap water) and sterilizes in just 10 minutes! Also uses less energy than the Microwave sterilizer, for you energy concious people out there.

An essential part of your baby gear if you use any bottle! Anything that is silicone or rubber can be sterilized in here (as long as boiling or autoclave is recomended as sterilizer method) i.e., pacifiers & chew toys!

5.0 out of 5 stars peace of mind and huge timesaver, December 4, 2002

I didn't like the idea of running my breastpump in the dishwasher with dishes covered in food, even if it does say that the high temps will sterilize it. I didn't even dream of boiling the parts of my breastpump, who has time for that? I use this product everyday, sometimes twice a day. It gives me the peace of mind that I am keeping as much bacteria as possible out of my expressed milk, which means it will be able to be stored as long as possible. That's important, because pumping is not very fun, and we all like to do it as little as we have to. Now, even if I just want to sterlize only my breastpump, I use just a little bit of water and it takes only 8 minutes! Much less time than boiling or using the dishwasher. One word of caution, this sterilizer will fit many bottles, and will fit the pump, but you cannot fit nine lids, rings, nipples, AND bottles and your breastpump. If you just sterlize your pump and the nine bottles, it will fit along with a ring or two and maybe one nipple. Or you can stack stuff on top of each other, but beware as it may topple out on you when you pull it out of the sterlizer. I still gave the product 5 stars, because I find that its capacity usually fits my needs anyway (i am a breastfeeding stay-at-home mom that expresses breastmilk for evening feedings for my husband and short trips away from baby).

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Product!, August 11, 2002

As a new mom who's still trying to get used to "flying solo" with a newborn, the Avent Express Steam Sterilizer has been a lifesaver for me! In just 8 minutes, I can sterilize 6 bottles, all of their parts, as well as the parts to my breast pump. I don't have to worry about boiling water and then waiting for the water to cool before using the pieces (I just don't have that kind of time!), nor do I have to worry about melting nipples on the stove (something that I'd be sure to do, given my newly acquired sleep deprivation!) This product is most certainly worthy the money and I would buy it again without batting an eyelash!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!, December 11, 2001

This sterilizer is so easy to use! With our first child we boiled everything in a pan on the stove and often scorched something if we became distracted by a screaming baby. But with this product, you just put in a little bit of water, load it with whatever you want to sterilize, push the button, and walk away. More than just Avent products fit in this, including Medela breast pump parts. So far we have not found anything that doesn't fit in this sterilizer. We highly recommend this product - it is well worth the money!

2.0 out of 5 stars Neat Product, but what a hassle!, February 11, 2004

This review is from: Philips Avent Electric Steam Sterilizer (Baby Product)
I was initially excited when I bought this product. Hoping to have the misery of boiling bottles taken out of my daily routine. After two trys, I found myself cleaning the interior, and packing everything back up for a return! I immediately purchased the microwave sterilizer and have not looked back since. In my experience I think the only advantage to the electric sterilizer is that it can accomodate two more bottles, than the microwave version. Otherwise it is nothing but a hassle.
The thing is huge and bulky. Placing bottles inside is easy, but getting nipples, rings and caps in is cumbersome and made me uneasy. You have to slide some rings around the stem, but some go on the top rack. If I am in a hurry the worst part is placing my hand all the way down the steaming cauldron to grab a nipple, since they are placed right at the bottom a little above the hot water reservoir.
Sliding the trays in and out is a major inconvenience. I dont understand why they placed a lock on the stem body. All in all, the microwave version is the opposite. Easy to use, compact, great for transportation, comes with 4 9oz. bottles and above all, economical.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT PRODUCT-EASY TO USE !!!!!!, March 4, 2003

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this Avent Sterilizer for us mothers who need & want the use of fast & easy products. This is SO EASY to use. It only takes 8 minutes to sterilize ALL bottles (5) w/nipples & pacifiers. I use this sterilizer TWICE a Day ! You just have to clean & rinse out after each use. I keep it on my kitchen counter. Just keep the open vent away from your face, as the steam comes out. I think this sterilizer is better than putting your bottles in a Microwave, I'd rather do it the old fashion way, by sterilizing in water & steam. NO MESS, NO FUSS, CLEAN & EASY TO USE. SO PUT THIS ON YOUR REGISTRY !!!!!!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars You'll Love How Easy It Is!, November 1, 2005
This review is from: Philips Avent Electric Steam Sterilizer (Baby Product)
This one is easy. Put your stuff in, add a little water then push a button. Truely a no brainer. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is that you do have to drain it after each use. My freind didn't and something started growing in it. Other than that, this is perfect. If you take out the racks you can fit a ton in it at once. You don't have to watch over anything-go ahead and take care of your baby while this one does all the work for you. Put this time saver on you registry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Confused??????????, December 28, 2004

It's nice, quick, easy, and can hold alot. But the products only guarantees sterile bottles for 3 hrs after the cycle completes itself-- then what???? If you take them out, then there not sterile anymore. But you have to take them out to do another load. The bottles are soaked, so if you dry them there no longer sterile. I'm confused as to how to dry and store the sterilized bottles.

I remember the days you would use a pot and hot water to sterilize your baby bottles. Not anymore. I received this as a gift from my babyshower. One of the best gifts I could have received. You add water, pack the sterilizer, push the button and no need to watch until it's done. This is a "have to have" product.
