4.0 out of 5 stars No problems here...
I recently purchased this DVD player on sale at a major retail outlet. For the price I paid, I am more than satisfied with the performance. If you are looking for a basic DVD player, look into this one. Since I already have a receiver with built in Dolby Digital and DTS, I didn't want a player that had all the same decoders (why waste the money?). Picture quality is...

1.0 out of 5 stars Look to Sony for a smart buy

Well, I have now bought 4 DVD players for separate locations about the house and by far, the Philips DVD621has been the biggest disappointment yet. Load time is frustratingly long, about 45 seconds to even recognize that a disc is in the drawer, then, you guessed it, more load time. The player does not offer any display for what chapter you are on and in more DVD plays than not, the movies begin skipping around an hour and a half in. I have also experienced "freezes" if a movie has been paused for more than about an hour. When I say "freezes," I mean the entire player locks up (including the power button) and the only way to reclaim your DVD is to unplug the unit. Avoid at all cost and buy a fast, reliable and features aplenty Sony.

1.0 out of 5 stars Manufacturing problems, November 25, 2001
This review is from: Philips DVD621AT DVD Player (Electronics)
After reading the other reviews here, I was hesitant to buy this model, but it was advertised locally at an unbeatable price, so I took the plunge. Unfortunately, my gamble didn't pay off because the unit has the same problem described in another review. It gets half way through a disc and then freezes. This happened on both a rental disc and a brand new one. Once the unit froze, none of the controls worked, including the power button and the only way to turn off the machine was to unplug it. While some units may not be defective, clearly enough of them are that you should consider something else. Mine's going back to the store to be traded for another brand.

1.0 out of 5 stars DVD621 has internal problems according to Philips!, August 24, 2001

I received this about 2 weeks ago and have had nothing but problems. It freezes on movies then will go blank and say insert playable disk. It does this on every single DVD put in the machine. I called philips about the problem and was told by them that this is an internal manufacturing problem with this particular model. ALL of them are like this. I waited 4 weeks after I ordered this to receive it. Now I have to wait for the RMA letter from Philips, ship it back at MY cost, then they will ship me a replacement. If you are in the market for a DVD player, stay away from this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Entry level DVD- NOT!!!, November 19, 2002

This is not what I expected out of a reputable company, but with so many DVD players to choose from stay away from this unit. Freezes up or skips on most discs. Load time is excessive and remote is not very intuitive. Got taken on this unit plain and simple.

If you are looking for a basic DVD player, look into this one. Since I already have a receiver with built in Dolby Digital and DTS, I didn't want a player that had all the same decoders (why waste the money?). Picture quality is great. The remote is easy to use. I am pleased so far.

Note: I read the reviews above shortly after purchasing the player and got worried. So I immediately put the player to the test. After watching two movies consecutively (in the same sitting), the player was still running flawlessly. Not sure what the glitch was on the two above, but perhaps I have a later model that has been corrected. We'll see.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS DVD PLAYER IS GREAT!, June 19, 2002
This review is from: Philips DVD621AT DVD Player (Electronics)
This is the first DVD player that I bought, and that was almost a year ago. Today, it still works as good as the day I bought it.
It was easy to get set up, the remote fits in your hand well and it's got great features for a great price.
I watch DVD's ALL the time, and alot of them contain alot of extras. I have NEVER had a problem with the DVD not playing, stopping in the middle of a movie, not ejecting, or not taking a command. Mine has worked flawlessly.
The ONLY thing about this player is that it does take a few extra seconds for DVD's to load, and it will not play CD-R's. If you are looking for a great beginner player then this is for you. But if you are wanting a player that plays CD-R's, and has tons of features, then pay more and get a better player. This isn't the best player out there, but it's the best player for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still going strong..., April 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips DVD621AT DVD Player (Electronics)
I've had this player for over a year now and still no problems. Someone else mentioned that the discs are slow to load and this is true, but it's a small price to pay for the deal I got. I've watched hundreds of DVDs. The only ones that give me trouble are the ones I rent (especially the ones that look like the renters used it as a frisbee). How do discs get in that condition? Anyway, no problems, no flaws, just great picture and sound for a small price.

To the guy with the modulating between light and dark...that's the copyright protection kicking in. If you hook up the DVD player through a VCR, that's what happens. I did that first because I have an older TV with only the RF input. Turns out I needed and RF modulator...and the problem was fixed. Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great player!!, January 12, 2002

I also like this player a lot. Philips must have made two versions of this model, because I have had no problems with anything I have run. The Star Wars Spec. Ed. DVD choked my other player, but runs great on this model. I also ran Disney DVDs without any problems. As for the others, I had no issues with any of the discs I ran and I used it a lot after Christmas! Also
I has to call tech support about a feature I couldn't figure out and they were great! Good customer support is important and I wasn't disappointed.
The remote is fine, but I'd kill for one with lighted buttons.

But all in all, this is a great player for those that just need a DVD player. It's well within a modest budget (like mine!) and should provide hassle-free use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Replacement DVD Update, September 30, 2001

At first I was VERY upset when I saw the replacement. It was the SAME model number after Philips had told me that these models had a manufacturing problem, but I figured I'd go ahead and give it a shot. I hooked it up (that took maybe a whole minute) and started a DVD. It played beautifully, no lock-ups or skips. I am very happy with the quality and the performance of this player. Philip's customer server was wonderful through the whole ordeal and I would not hesitate to buy another Philips DVD player.

1.0 out of 5 stars the tease, January 18, 2003

This review is from: Philips DVD621AT DVD Player (Electronics)
This player is exceedingly slow to load and has the remarkable ability to freeze (lock up like a windows pc) in the middle of the most dramatic scences of any DVD. I think it was designed expressly for the sqeamish to watch horror movies. It senses your anxitey level and freezes before you become to scared. If you feel your blood pressure can stand to watch the whole movie without pausing then buy another player.
