4.0 out of 5 stars Works fine but sensitive to dirty/scratched discs
I bought this DVD player as my second one to use in my bedroom. Overall, I'm quite happy with its quality in both audio and video. It's not a high-end model but I believe it would serve your need well if you just want to switch from VHS to digital to get a much better audio/video signals. 1.0 out of 5 stars Unacceptable: failed in less than 30 days
I purchased one of these from another retailer (sorry Amazon), and returned it 30 days later.

After 28 days it developed a disturbing habit of “freezing up” after an hour or so of playback. The only recourse at this point was to turn off the machine (directly at the unit), only to have it freeze again after a few more minutes of playback.

I bought this DVD player as my second one to use in my bedroom. Overall, I'm quite happy with its quality in both audio and video. It's not a high-end model but I believe it would serve your need well if you just want to switch from VHS to digital to get a much better audio/video signals. This player has also the capability of playing CDR and CDRWs that can't be found in other similar players. It's surely a plus. Only one drawback I found with this DVD player is that it seems too sensitive to dirty/scratched discs. If you intend to watch DVDs from rental places like NetFlix.com watch out for those old and scratched discs due to heavy usage.

I'd like to mention that it's hard to detect the differences in quality between this DVD player and others in the same price range if you don't have high-end stereo/video systems hooked up with it. In conclusion, except you do have expensive high-end audio/video systems, this DVD is a good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal, October 21, 2000

This was the first DVD player I bought....and I have no complaints. I was immediately blown away by the video and sound quality improvements over the VCR.

The only problem I had was related to the fact that my television did not have the neccesary line inputs to hook this bad boy up. I had to spend an extra $30 after the fact to get it to play certain videos without the copyright protection of my vcr distorting the visual.

I would VERY much recommend this item. For the price and DVD quality over a VCR, you can't beat it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, October 28, 2000

this is my first DVD player and it is truly wonderful. I did not have the proper output on my TV. Using a Magnavox RF modulator did the trick and it works like a charm! Easy to use and set up, this is ideal for the first time DVD buyer. It provides easy to understand instructions and set-up is a breeze, even if you have to use a modulator. Excellent performance and highly recommended for superior sound and picture options.

4.0 out of 5 stars Electronics Fan, January 16, 2001

I recieved this DVD Player 3 weeks ago and think it is pretty cool! It is a great machine for the beginner to DVD technology. The price is hard to beat and the quality of the machine has been first rate. I played the Matrix, (A DVD that apparently freezes many players) without a problem. The remote is easy to use and self explanitory.

The sound and picture are very clear and the DVD's load fairly quickly. The player also reads CDR/RW very well and plays audio CDs.

A great value for the price, and I would recomend it to anyone who is looking for their first DVD player.

I was sure the first time there was a problem with the DVD I was playing. However replaying a DVD that had successfully completed some days before turned up the same problem.

When it worked correctly, I found the playback quality acceptable. This was used only as a 2nd DVD player for a 20-inch TV with no extra speakers, so picture and sound quality weren’t that important.

The on off switch is awkward. This unit seems to be designed for the European market. Consumers there insist on an actual “mains” switch that allows them to shut of an electronic component completely, rendering the remote control useless. Yes, it goes into “standby” when “turned off” using the remote, but if you ever shut it off directly at the unit, it’s dead until turned back on from that location. A minor point I was willing to overlook, if it weren’t for the playback failure.

It does have one feature that my primary DVD home theatre system does not: it remembers the last position played for the past 5 DVDs. Very useful if you stop watching before the end; it prompts you to resume where you left off when next you turn it back on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Basic Player, January 16, 2001
This review is from: Philips DVD701AT DVD Player (Electronics)
I shopped around for about a year before purchasing this model. I was looking at other more expensive brands, but this model really surprised me with its abilities. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a DVD player that won't break their budget and still delivers excellent sound and video.

What more can you ask? Plays everything, has a decent display so you don't have to do everything with the TV on, allows programming up to 100 audio discs (and remembers them), and has the usual good sound and video you expect. Very nice. A sleeper....

I purchased the 701AT about 5 months ago, and I would recommend it to anyone looking into a low cost player, although the Toshiba SD1600 sounds pretty nice... Anyway, I haven't had any major problems with it when I'm playing mainstream DVDs. However, I am an anime fan, and sometimes on these lower budget DVDs the player likes to start skiping backwards a frame for a split second before advacing to the next. This is easily remedied, however, by simply rewinding for a second, but it does get irritating. Other than that, it's a nice player.
