4.0 out of 5 stars Great value
This is an excellent value. The description neglects to state this model is not cable ready. There are two solutions.

1. Use a cable converter box.
2. Purchase a (female) coax to (male) RCA converter for a few dollars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thanks for posting that this does NOT have a tuner!
Thank you to all the people posting that this does unit does NOT have a tuner, since Amazon doesn't seem to have that fact anywhere in their product description. Thank you to all the people posting that this does unit does NOT have a tuner, since Amazon doesn't seem to have that fact anywhere in their product description. I figured that it didn't, based on the price, but having that spelled out clearly in the listings would be pretty useful and save on Amazon having to deal with a bunch of returns from people who needed to have one with a tuner. Philips may be a decent brand, but we don't have a cable or satellite box and hook up our stuff directly to the RF cable from the cable company, so this unit would do us no good whatsoever. If your cable hook up setup is similar, SKIP this unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD/VCR player combo, December 26, 2007

Plays all formats flawlessly. Easy to read remote. Troublefree setup. Philips is a Dutch company which produces quality stuff. Beats the price and quality of any Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese products.

After suffering through a couple of really junky DVD/VCR combinations, I have been happy with this Philips model. I've now been using it for nine months and have had no problems at all. It plays DVD flawlessly, even those scratched-up rental discs. I don't use the VCR all that much, but when I do, it works without a problem.

One nice feature is that if you turn off the DVD player in the middle of a movie, and you don't eject the disc, it will remember where you left off. The next time you power on, it will ask whether you want to resume, or start over from the beginning. That's an essential convenience, and unbelievably not not all players will do that!

My only complaint is the remote. A good remote will have different button shapes that you can feel without looking down at them. This one has some essential buttons close together with the same exact shape, which means you have to look down to make sure you're about to press the correct one.

As to the reviewers who complain that this unit has no tuner, well, you need to do your research before buying, and now you know! As long as you're using a separate tuner, you should be fine with this model.

I did not buy this item for me, but my mom has alot of trouble before trying to coordinate all the electronics together in order to use. With this system she says she can easily go from tv to movie mode without any problems. She has enjoyed the ease of being able to work all of the electronics when it is only her at the house.

This is a very simple and straight forward player. It's light, basic and full featured. If you still have VHS tapes it's a great way to go. I have mine hooked up to a digital cable tv and I haven't had any problems setting up for a movie as I've had with others in the past. It has wonderful image quality, sound is great, I'd definitely recommend it!

3.0 out of 5 stars No Tuner, May 14, 2008

Maybe there is some clue in the description of this item but it needs to be more clear that this does not include a tuner. At least the box had a big sticker on the outside warning that it does not have a tuner. Might be a nice 5-star item if you're hooking it to a cable box, but I had to return it unopened.

1.0 out of 5 stars DVD Player stopped working after 10 DVD's, May 28, 2009

I have never been so disappointed with Philips before. I got this in Dec for Christmas after using the DVD a total of 15 with new DVD's it now makes a clicking noise and freezes. I wrote Philips and they wrote back telling me to unplug the unit for 30 seconds and because it is out of there hands now (after 90 days) they wash there hands of this apparent defective unit that clearly has a motor issue. I would tell anyone who is purchasing this item, that if you end up buying it make sure you have an iron clad warranty, but honestly I would not waste my money on it.

My father-in-law received this unit for Christmas and we were able to copy 15 year old VHS tapes to DVD (used DVD-R). It allows you to create a basic DVD menu and parse the video into 10 min chapters to easily navigate through the DVD. For our primary purpose it worked well. The biggest plus is that it is simple to use once you read/understand the directions ; ). Overall quality of DVD output was decent considering the original tapes were slightly degraded. We were able to play the recorded DVD on both mac & pc computers as well as on a yamaha and sony DVD player.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this for sure, August 28, 2008

I bought one of these & I have to say it's really bad. The set-up is complicated. The remote has every button you can imagine but you can never seem to find the one you want because the layout is complicated & not functionally organized. Bigger issues. The VCR player quit after a very short period of use. Next, the remote quit working. Without that, the DVD functions don't work because there's no manual option. This thing is a piece of junk.
