Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Be impressed with this Philips DVD player with HDMI digital video and audio connection. Step into another home entertainment arena as you immerse yourself with high definition video capable of 720p/1080i resolution. The DVP3960's ultra-slim design that fits anywhere in your entertainment set-up.

192kHz, 24-bit Audio Digital-To-Analog Converter Enhances Analog Sound Input
192KHz sampling enables you to have an accurate representation of the original sound curves. Together with a 24-bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analog sound wave form, giving a much richer audio reproduction.

HDMI 1080i With High Definition Video Upscaling
HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a direct digital connection that can carry digital HD video as well as digital multichannel audio. By eliminating the conversion to analog signals it delivers perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with DVI (Digital Video Interface).

Progressive Scan Component Video For Optimized Image Quality
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

12-Bit, 108 MHz Video Processing For Sharp, Natural Images
12-bit Video digital-to-analog converter is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit digital-to-analog converter become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.

Plays DivX, MP3, WMA and JPEG Digital Camera Photos
Multi-format playability allows you to play most file formats for maximum listening and viewing pleasure, including MP3, WMA, JPEG and the popular DivX digital media format. DivX playback enables you to play and share compressed high quality DivX video content beyond your computer.

DivX For Standard Playback of All DivX Media Files
With DivX support, you are able to enjoy DivX encoded videos in the comfort of your living room. The DivX media format is an MPEG4-based video compression technology that enables you to save large files like movies, trailers and music videos on media like CD-R/RW, and DVD recordable discs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing upconversion player for the price, June 25, 2007

This review is from: Philips DVP3960 Multiformat 1080i Upscaling DVD Player with DivX, MP3, Windows Media Support (Electronics)
The HDMI 1080i upconversion looks great compared to the 480p of the standard DVD. The HDMI connection gives a much clearer and brighter picture with much more detail than the standard DVD.

This player gives the user the option to choose between different resolutions to view (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or "AUTO") in the HDMI setup. But choosing the "AUTO" option will take all the guess work out the the decision making.

Another viewer said that he was unable to receive any audio signal via the HDMI cable, but that is obviously wrong. The manual clearly indicates how to receive audio if you are using the HDMI cable. You must set the DVD player's {Digital Output - PCM-Only} for HDMI connection.

There is no need to purchase any high price HD DVD or Blue-Ray player. Especially since they are not a lot of movies available in these formats and they have not decided which format will win out. Plus, you will have to get one that has upconversion on it anyway. This player gives near HD quality to standard DVD's and it's far less expensive

Very impressive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value-Better than Sony/Yamaha/Pioneer etc, October 26, 2007

First off, those reviews that state the remote does not have a fast forward feature or an on/off switch on the player etc etc...do me a favor - before you write a review, read the manual !! This little beauty has all of that and much much more.
I have owned many 'up-market' machines, the big boy's like Sony, Pioneer, JVC. In fact prior to ordering this I ordered a Yamaha, only for it to be D.O.A., with a DVD tray that would not open ! So I thought I'd try this great deal at a fraction of the price of the Yamaha and I am totally delighted. I even managed to enter the appropriate codes and make the player region free, which is another huge bonus for the money. To have all this plus the HDMI upscaling for my Hi-Def TV at around $45 is a steal.
It seems regardless of how much you spend these days, gadgets don't last in this disposable society. Plus technology changes so quickly, it's crazy to invest more money when this little beauty does the job so well.
People also complain about the aesthetics, saying it looks cheap. Again, I don't agree, it's very small and compact and the remote is very functional, again more so than the Yamaha at three times the price.
Buy one, buy two, buy three - I promise you can't go wrong with this great HDMI Multi Region DVD Player.

5.0 out of 5 stars HDMI does carry audio signal, May 22, 2007
By
This review is from: Philips DVP3960 Multiformat 1080i Upscaling DVD Player with DivX, MP3, Windows Media Support (Electronics)
I just bought this a few days ago so I haven't run a lot of dvd's through it yet. So far there have been no problems. I am very pleased with the upconvert and that you can choose between 720p or 1080i in the HDMI setup. The previous reviewer said that the was no audio signal through the HDMI cable but I found that to be incorrect. It may be that they didn't have something configured correctly on their tv. All I have running from my dvd player to my tv is a HDMI cable and the sound is very good. Setup was pretty easy, picture looks great!
