5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased So Far. Highly Recommended
So far I am very impressed with the quality for the money. The picture looks nice, it's easy to use, the features are very nice for the price, and it will play anything. I decided to buy this player instead of a recorder because I think the recorder technology is still not settled.

The only thing that could sour my review is if it breaks too soon, and I will...

1.0 out of 5 stars Maybe ours is a dud, but...
We have not had luck getting more than 1 episode of any disc to play on this crap-bucket. We own a $30 "Mintek" DVD player (who has heard of that?) which has performed faithfully for 5 years but is about to die, and unfortunately with this particular Phillips model, we are stuck with the poor dying Mintek until we figure out something else. Discs skip after one episode,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased So Far. Highly Recommended, November 26, 2006

So far I am very impressed with the quality for the money. The picture looks nice, it's easy to use, the features are very nice for the price, and it will play anything. I decided to buy this player instead of a recorder because I think the recorder technology is still not settled.

The only thing that could sour my review is if it breaks too soon, and I will not know that for a couple years.

I recommend this model.

UPDATE in April, 2007. I am VERY pleased with the DVD player. The picture looks great, the player has several nice conveniences, and has experienced no problems. I am happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Free Region Code, February 3, 2007
This review is from: Philips Dvp3040 Multi Region Code Free Divx DVD Player (Electronics)
Hello, I had some problems like many peoples about free region on this product. So, I found a solution in the Internet that can help everybody. There are 2 methods depending on the version your set is pre-loaded.

1) - Go to preference page in the Setup menu. - Press 138931 on the keypad of the Remote Control. - Options will be available to be selected. - Done !

2) - Open tray. - Press 99990 on the remote control. - Done !

That is it! Enjoy the best product

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, November 24, 2006

This review is from: Philips Dvp3040 Multi Region Code Free Divx DVD Player (Electronics)
Just got this baby and so far it's outstanding. It plays everything I've thrown at it so far. I wasn't sure if it would play my xVID files, but it DOES, and I wasn't expecting them to look so good! I only paid thirty bucks for it (black friday), and it's blowing me away. And not only does it play everything, but it looks so sexy and thin. Even the dvd tray is super thin, but solid.

So if you're not quite ready to fork over the money for an HD-DVD or Blue-ray player get this all in one DVD player now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Multi-Regional player!, July 29, 2007
This review is from: Philips Dvp3040 Multi Region Code Free Divx DVD Player (Electronics)
So far so great!
Player DOES play all regions; UK dvds are crystal clear and so is any other DVD that pops in. The player even stabilizes the letterbox and makes it centered and even, no matter what is put on.

Great buy for a fair price!

Just bought this DVD player at BestBuy after seeing it on the DivX site. Plays DivX discs flawlessly. Replaces DVP642. If you're looking for a DVD player which plays everything, BUY this one!

Nu Mantra (Earth, Universe) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Philips Dvp3040 Multi Region Code Free Divx DVD Player (Electronics)
Ok, I am reviewing this primarily on just two areas of this player. I got it for one reason; I needed a DVD player that would play my original language martial art DVDs. I do not know much about the various DVD features. I have a JVC that I bought a couple of years ago for about 5 xs as much as I paid for this one. It has many more features, but that is a moot issue since all I want to do is play, rewind, ff, stop, etc. However, the JVC disappointed in that as my martial arts discs collection grew, I would find out that my more expensive purchases (Celestial remastered Shaw Bros. movies in original lang.) would not play on the JVC. At the time, some websites were advertising region free players for an arm and a leg. I learned there are many sites were people list "hack" codes for making DVD players region free. Nothing was out there to help me with my JVC. I put off looking for a new DVD player until a few days ago when I figured I could get a good deal on a region free player. I read the reviews for this Phillips and found a couple of sites that list codes to make it region free. I bought this one about 3 days ago for 40.00 at Best Buy. I tried the one code, that did not work. Then another that caused the player to give a very distorted picture. Then I tried the original code.. and BAM. NTSC showed at the top of ths screen. I hurried and put in one of my DVDs that I could only watch on my computer.. and was all smiles for the evening! Now.. about the codes.. you DONT need to hack into this, which I found out once I finally read the guide book that came with it. You can do that in the Setup then Video menu! So, that it does what people said it would do.. and what I need it to do... I love it, especially for 40.00 The remote, however, is one of the worse I have ever seen. The buttons are small and you really have to press hard to engage them. I also find that the shape of it (seemingly inocuous) hurts my hand for some reason. The buttons do not glow in the dark, but there are only a few, so eventually I will remember what is what. The rewind/ff buttons also serve as pan buttons. There were times when I pressed them and instead of rewind/forward... the picture moved to the left or to the right. I do not mind that, I just have not yet figured out how to get one function over the other. And of course, it would be nice to have the option of getting this DVD player in black. The unit is simple, lightweight, shows a beautiful picture, and is inexpensive. I am enjoying this unit thus far and recommend it, especially if you need a region free player.
