4.0 out of 5 stars Great with minor issues
This is a great little box in almost every way, and so it is more useful, I think, to say what the downside is.

The CD player remembers where it was only during the pause-state, and the pause-state doesn't last very long. Turn it off, and you've lost your place. This is a minor issue, because a small pad and pencil an resolve it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great, until the CD player stops working
I loved this player for all the reasons the positive reviewers mentioned, and even now I like the parts of it that still work.

However, after several months -- long enough for the unit to go out of warranty -- the CD player stopped accepting CDs. It ejects all CDs -- not only defective ones, but ALL. There's nothing in the troubleshooting documentation or...

Considering that the external FM antenna, in my location, does not have to be extended, it would have been nicer to have an FM antenna built-in and just have the external antenna for those of us far from a signal source.

Other than that, my wife has been delighted to be able to listen to any kind of current CD, her iPod, or a USB flash drive with music files on it (the drive has to be formatted as a Windows flash drive, which can be done on an OS X Mac as well as on a Windows PC), or listen to the radio.

The sound is very pleasant to listen to and is high quality considering the size of the speakers. In fact we intend to get a second one for another location in the house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice value for money!, November 24, 2008

This review is from: Philips Executive 30-Watt Micro Speaker System with iPod Dock (Black/Silver) (Electronics)
I was looking for an all-in-one micro music system / boombox, and Philips DCM230 provides everything I wanted. Many systems I searched around had one thing or the other missing. Some didn't have a USB port and others didn't have the Aux audio port.

I am going to give this to my parents. I can just drag and drop some MP3 songs for them on a 2GB USB stick without needing to burn the songs on CDs. My mom and dad (they are old school) can just plug and play. The Aux port was needed for using Ipod Shuffle. And of course, there is the Ipod dock (which I will need whenever I visit them), CD Player and AM/FM/Clock.

The sound is very good and the system looks slick. I'm seriously thinking about buying one for myself too. Overall, it's a good value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars great little box, October 8, 2008
This review is from: Philips Executive 30-Watt Micro Speaker System with iPod Dock (Black/Silver) (Electronics)
Better than average sound for the money. Great options included ipod, radio,cd, and aux. Nice volume for main source in a small room, or for background music in a larger room. Good option for the pricey Bose system plus more features.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just don't mistake this for a clock radio, December 21, 2008
This review is from: Philips Executive 30-Watt Micro Speaker System with iPod Dock (Black/Silver) (Electronics)
On the surface this looks like it could work as a clock radio, but the description of this as a speaker system is more appropriate. For that purpose its great. The unit feels expensive and solidly built.
It also has great sound for its size. The CD player is a bonus that adds flexibility.

The system does not work as clock radio or alarm clock for following reasons:
- the clock is only visible if unit is playing and for a few minutes after play stops. Then it goes dark.
- has a feature that kind of works like an alarm, but not really. There's also no snooze feature.

However, after several months -- long enough for the unit to go out of warranty -- the CD player stopped accepting CDs. It ejects all CDs -- not only defective ones, but ALL. There's nothing in the troubleshooting documentation or on the Philips website that deals with the problem. A properly used CD player should last more than nine months, I would think.

This review is from: Philips Executive 30-Watt Micro Speaker System with iPod Dock (Black/Silver) (Electronics)
The best iPod player I've heard for $118 (at Target). The fact that it has a CD player and an FM receiver was icing on the cake! Most of the other iPod speakers I listened to sounded pretty so-so. Most had hardly any bass response and they cost the same or more. The Bose system sounded great, but it was almost $300. But, I do have to agree with some of the professional reviews I've read. The bass can be boomy at times... especially if it's sitting in a corner. The bass is much better if the unit is out in the middle of the room. And I wish there was more control of the overall tone. Having just 4 preset EQ settings really isn't ideal. If it had individual bass and treble controls or some kind of graphic EQ, I would have given it 5 stars all the way. All things considered, the fact that you can get really decent volume and bass response and all the other features (CD,FM,MP3) in a small, attractive unit... I definitely recommend the Phillips DCM 230/37 to all but the most sophisticated listener.

5.0 out of 5 stars it has all I'm looking for, September 2, 2008
This review is from: Philips Executive 30-Watt Micro Speaker System with iPod Dock (Black/Silver) (Electronics)
I don't own this product yet, but had the opportunity to test it thoroughly in the store yesterday. I decided that it is the one I want because it has all the features that I need:
-portable (all in one unit)+ (battery powered)
-great sound (30W RMS)+ bass boost + 4-5 eq presets
-many audio sources: USB, Aux in, CD/MP3, Tuner, Ipod

The ONLY drawback I found was that the FM antenna is not part of the unit, you need to plug an FM aerial antenna. This unit is meant to stand in an office or house, so the "FM on the go" seems not to be an option. However, considering all the other features, it makes a great portable Hi-Fi multisource piece of equipment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Product: Philips BTM630/37, November 14, 2009
This review is from: Philips Executive 30-Watt Micro Speaker System with iPod Dock (Black/Silver) (Electronics)
The CD player in the first unit received stopped working shortly after. Philips sent a replacement unit, the CD player did not work right away. The replacement unit displayed signs of usage, scratches, stains etc. The third unit worked but had not display, again there were stains and other signs of usage on the unit. Philips offered a by-back of the unit. It seems that they send refurbished units as replacements, the handbook also had stains on it and the serial number was blacked out. In addition Philips only gives you 30 days warranty in the replacement unit. Considering that the first unit failed after only 40 days we would loose almost 10 month on warranty.
If I would be asked I would say: don't by this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good All-Around Combo Player, January 9, 2009
This review is from: Philips Executive 30-Watt Micro Speaker System with iPod Dock (Black/Silver) (Electronics)
There's very few Ipod/Cd Player/Radio/USB input speaker systems out there...and this is one. It operates fine and sounds just fine...if you think of it as an upscale kitchen/bedroom radio. It is not in the class of a Bose, but will do well for short periods of time, or for background music. My overall impression after purchasing the unit, was that reviews here were/are a little harsh on the sound output. I think this unit a great value at around a $100.
