Fill your space with clear, rich sound with the Philips Fidelio docking speaker. This stylish speaker lets you dock any iPod, iPhone, or iPad, even in its case. It features Pure Digital Sound technology, SoundCurve design, and precisely tuned bass pipes for crystal-clear sound with powerful, thumping bass. Optimal acoustic volume matches the speaker's requirements for balanced audio, while shielding technology blocks mobile phone interference. An aux-in jack lets you plug in MP3 players and other electronic devices. It comes with a remote control and works with Philips's free DockStudio app, giving you control over every aspect of your music using only your iPhone. The app also lets you access thousands of Internet radio stations worldwide.
Simultaneously Plays Music and Charges
The Fidelio docking speaker lets you connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to the speaker system so you can enjoy your favorite music with full, clear sound. This speaker also automatically charges your device while it's docked--even with a case on--so you won't have to worry about running out of battery power.
SoundCurve Design for Clear Audio
SoundCurve gives you the best of both worlds: an elegant, curved design and crystal-clear sound with 30 watts RMS total output power. The clean curve of the speaker's back cover dramatically reduces internal resonance and eliminates vibrations and distortion for sharp, detailed sound quality. Precisely tuned bass pipes provide deep, tight bass reproduction, while acoustic volume matches the speaker's requirements for balanced sound.
Pure Digital Sound Provides Balance
Unlike speakers that use analog sound processing technology, the Fidelio docking speaker features advanced Pure Digital Sound technology. Pure Digital Sound technology uses digital processing at each stage of the circuit for a high signal-to-noise ratio. The result is unsurpassed, evenly balanced sound clarity.
Bass Reflex System for Deep, Clear Bass
The speaker features a bass reflex system that provides a deep bass experience from a compact loudspeaker box system. This system includes a bass pipe acoustically aligned to the woofer to extend the overall low frequency and create a whole new dimension of deep, thumping bass. This system also results in less distortion.
Optimal Acoustic Volume for Rich Bass
To ensure that you don't miss even the lowest note, the Fidelio speaker features the ideal match of acoustic volume to midrange driver--the volume always matches the driver's acoustic requirements. Low tones come out deep and tight for strong, rich bass.
Stylish Design For Any Room
Measuring 5-1/5 by 16-9/10 by 6-1/10 inches (H x W x D), the speaker has an elegant, streamlined design with a contemporary look. Put it on a desk or bookshelf to enjoy crystal-clear audio throughout your space.
The speaker comes with a remote control that matches the dock's design and makes it easy to control your music from anywhere in the room.
Free DockStudio App Unlocks Additional Features
If you own an iPod Touch or an iPhone, you can unlock even more features for your speaker using the complementary DockStudio app. This exclusive app allows you to navigate your music collection more easily, check your speaker's battery life, and control sound settings. You can even use the app to set customized music alarms, so you'll wake up to your favorite music every morning.

1. The price of the DS8550 is around $100 higher or so, depending on the week. But there are reasons for this price difference that may be quite justifiable depending on your needs.
2. The DS8550 has Bluetooth. This model does not. You must have an iOS device docked to it or any other device connected via an AUX line-in jack.
3. The DS8550 has a rechargeable battery backup so the speakers will continue to play when you unplug the device. This model does not.
4. The DS8550 has a carrying handle. This model does not, but the speaker is smaller than the DS8550.
These are just a few of the differences. Now, for what is the same: they both have AMAZING sound. Great bass and clear treble. I've had guests that were quite surprised at how great this model sounds.
The remote that comes with this speaker allows you to perform basic functions like changing music tracks, adjusting volume, etc. The iOS app designed for this speaker allows you to also change equalizer settings and select from presets like rock, jazz, and classical. The ROCK setting makes most music sound even more fantastic. The app also gives you access to internet radio stations, playback options and album art, and weather forecasts.
Philips has been building some great docking stations and speakers over the past few years. I am very impressed with the sound from their speakers in general, and this model is no exception! Five stars for this speaker, but if you have another $100 to spend, take a look at the DS8550 as well.
There are only two buttons on the front - volume up and volume down - but a remote control also comes with it which gives you a little more functionality. The "app" which can be downloaded from Philips is actually very nice and looks much better than the standard music player, and with the equalizer function provides slightly better sound (the equalizer feature only works when it's plugged in to the speakers). It has a couple of screens, either one that shows the music (and has on-screen controls, which can be hidden) or a screen that shows the time with the weather and forecast(it can also be hidden - and incidentally, the picture shown changes throughout the day and I might be mistaken but it seems to reflect the actual weather conditions). It only has a few options for customization but seems to be very worthwhile, especially if you want to listen to internet radio. Some others have complained that it works to drain the iPhone battery, and I would tend to agree with that as it seems to run down much quicker even if I only leave the app running in the background.

Features and Notes
- The Philips Fidelio DS8530 accepts iPhone, iPods, AND iPads - which sets it apart from many of the other high-end iPod docks on the market. The input adapter is well-designed and will not require you take off *most* of the cases that are on the market (the main exceptions will be with iPads).
- Very good sound performance, especially once you adjust the equalizer settings using the Fidelio app. While the Fidelio works straight with iTunes (Although you will still need to download the Fidelio app) - the sound performance seems flatter to me... maybe I am imagining it.... but I don't think so. Also, the speaker can be very loud - you will have no difficulty in filling a large room with music.
- The Fidelio app works pretty well. As mentioned it allows you to control equalizer settings, but it also links directly with Tune-in Radio (which in my opinion is the best way to listen to internet radio). This feature works great and is very easy to navigate. I will say that navigating through your playlists using the Fidelio app is not quite as easy.Read more ›
