It's only required to pair the phone and sync the time, but after that you can use any app. If you do not have the app, you won't be able to pair the device, but after you pair the device you can delete the app.

My phone also has the plug in on the top. Once you download the required software "Fidelio" then it allows for that. (upside down operation) (phone/device application) My device is a droid.

I would consider it able to charge almost any device with a micro USB my wife used it to charge her phone and her Kindle. It does steam through the Bluetooth well. I haven't had a problem. It is a great device.

Not sure if it uses batteries, but it does have a wall plug for u.s outlets.
