Philips Fidelio S2 Black Headphones
Fits snugly and comfortably in the ear.

Enjoy natural, high-definition sound wherever you go with the Fidelio S2 Headphones from Philips. These in-ear headphones feature lightweight metal and copper alloy housing, powerful neodymium drivers with layered motion control, and a semi-closed back to minimize sound leakage. Two sets of Comply foam tips and soft silicone tips in five sizes are included for a comfortable, customizable seal. The headphones feature a durable, tangle-free cable and anti-scratch gloss coating for protection.

High-Definition Speakers for Natural Sound

The Fidelio S2 in-ear headphones contain 13.5-millimeter neodymium speaker drivers that have been carefully tuned and tested to ensure balanced, natural sound. Layered motion control drivers deliver deep bass impact and refined high frequencies.

All-Metal Housing Reduces Vibration

The Fidelio S2's metal housing reduces resonance and dampens vibrations, resulting in precise and detailed sound. The ergonomic design adapts to your ear's natural curve without adding pressure, so you can wear them comfortably for long periods of time. Copper alloy outer housing keeps them lightweight yet durable.

Semi-Closed Back Minimizes Sound Leaks

The semi-closed-back architecture of these headphones combines the deep bass and noise isolation of a fully closed back with the transparent sound of an open back for authentic, balanced sound.

Two Sets of Comply Foam Tips and Five Silicone Tips

Two sets of Comply foam tips let you tailor your listening experience to your environment. The S-series tips fit snugly for all-day comfort, while the T-series tips provide excellent noise isolation in public spaces. Five sizes of soft, acoustically sealed silicone tips are also included.

Sound quality: excellent. These are the closest to my favorite Sennheiser HD 580 of the many headphones and earphones I've auditioned. Note that this depends heavily on good fit of the eartips (they come with about 8 different tips, 3 of those 3 work rather well for me); if you think lower frequencies (bass) is missing, try a larger eartip. Note, I always use these with a dedicated headphone amplifier (O2, or HRT microstreamer) with low impedance. I have no idea how they sound when used without one.

Comfort: very good. These are the most comfortable in-ear-monitors I have tried. Because they don't go in very deep into the ear canal, and come with comply foam tips, I can use them for many hours without discomfort or itching.

Convenience: I use them mostly for music listening, but have used the microphone for a few conversations, and it worked very well.
Flat cord does not get tangled or have stress points which break over time.

Build quality: excellent.

Price/performance: excellent. The sound quality is better than very well-respected $300 pair of closed-back over-the-ear headphones I also have.

Though I prefer the look of the black earphones (currently $130), I bought the white ones because they were close to $30 cheaper. You'd be very hard pressed to find better earphones in the $100 range, or even at $130. Since sound "quality" is largely relative, I find that often the best way to review it is by comparison. So, for the purposes of this review, I'll make occasional comparisons to another set of high-end earphones that I currently own, the Yamaha EPH-100 (also highly recommended).

DESIGN - 4/5 - The drivers are housed in machined copper alloy, which is said to improve acoustics. The earphones are quite large, housing big 13.5mm dynamic drivers. They're still relatively light for their size, and they have a good fit in my ear and never feel like they are weighing down or becoming uncomfortable. They are also semi-open housings with a vented back, which results in some moderate sound leakage, but for the most part it won't be a big issue to other people unless you're blasting your music in a relatively quiet room. Overall, the earphones are very pretty and high-end looking. The flat, large cable even looks and feels premium, and does a great job of reducing cable noise. As a result the S2's are almost always my choice for going on a run or work-out. The in-line mic and button work just fine with my Android phone (LG G2). No one has ever complained of trouble hearing me during a call. I would've preferred forward and reverse buttons, too, but that's being picky.

SOUND - 4.25/5 - Overall, excellent. The sound tends to even out and become more effortless after some moderate burn-in, but the sound didn't change as much after burn-in as with the Yamaha EPH-100.

That earphones are very recommended. Balanced sound and detailed.
The balanced sound let you listen to all the instruments and the S2 will deliver it as your request.
The bottom line: great headphones for any music.

Very nice crisp warm sound, but was very harsh on highs for the first couple hours. They also aren't as secure for doing active things like the gym but mine have never fallen out

I love the sound of these earbuds, but the main drawback I experienced was in the comfort of wearing them. To get a good deal in my ear canal, I found myself needing to use the larger inserts, but these became irritating within a matter of minutes of use. The smaller inserts were comfortable, but the sound quality would drop dramatically due to the lack of a good seal.

I'm kind of an audiophile and this ones sound like heaven (considering the price range off course), the only inconvenience is that they are big, really big for in hear, so they can be a little uncomfortable to wear for long periods.

I'm a somewhat puzzled by the positive reviews that the Philips S1 and S2 have gotten. The S1 made the "Wall of Fame" on Inner Fidelity, but for me it's unlistenable due to its sharp, dry treble and poor balance. These S2s definitely sound slightly better than the S1s. They are smoother in the highs, which I conjecture may be the result of the metal housing offering more stable and vibration free environment. They are more transparent, and are capable of more delicacy and atmosphere. Based on this, I can see them having some appeal. But the ergonomics are equally poor; the driver housing prevents full insertion into your ears, and the eartips, with their tapered rather than rounded ends, seem designed to fall out rather than stay in. Even with all the different eartips Philips included, I could only get a reasonably good seal by using eartips from another brand, Ultimate Ears.

Even when I get a good seal, the sound on these still seems not quite ideal. Compared to one of my favorite inexpensive IEMS, the UE500, the S2s have better definition and detail and more solid bass, but it doesn't entirely matter because the balance is wrong. There is a definite tilt in favor of the treble, which is overemphasized and sounds unpleasantly "hot" and dry. In fact, a certain dryness characterizes the entire sound of these S2s. Bass is solid and clear, but there needs to be a little more. Midrange is fine, and transparent, but doesn't sound particularly sweet or fresh (as does the midrange of the VSonic VSD1, for example). I'm just not sure at this point that these will become IEMs that I'll be listening to on a regular basis. But I'll give them a try, and will change my rating if my experience with them improves in any way.
