The sound quality is decent, but I had problems with sweat on the earpads, also it sits rather firmly, so I couldn't wear it for longer than an hour at one time. Also, the plastic support for the sliding frame chipped in a few weeks, I patched it up with tape, but a bigger piece broke again, so the headphones were effectively ruined. There's a reason why it's on...

These headphones deliver some serious quality. The bass and treble are great, with exceptional sound. They work well from heavy metal to Stravinsky. They are well designed and are so light you barely know that you're wearing them. The hinges are durable, and the blue pegs are for winding the cord around. They are very convenient and portable, they fold right up into themselves. I definatly recommend these to anyone that wants an awesome pair of headphones, but doesn't want to shell out major mula.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific budget headphones, January 4, 2003
This review is from: Philips HP550 Full Size Foldable Headphones (Electronics)
I think this is a terrific set of headphones for the budget minded buyer, I've not come across a better one at this price range. I would readily recommend it to anyone looking for budget headphones.

LIKES:
1. Price

2. Sound
Sound quality is an extremely subjective issue. I think the best sound system I've come across is a 11 speaker Bose system in a rented SUV. If I were to give that 10 for sound quality, I would put this somewhere around 7.5. The treble is crisp, and the bass is to my liking. I'm fairly certain bass fans may want a little more, but even they likely will find this above average (at the budget end of headphones).
And if you're the one who likes your music LOUD, this one absolutely delivers!

3. Ergonomics
A. Cable length of 1.5 feet gives me a little more room to maneuver around my desk without having to take these off (many headphones have cables 1.2 feet long)
B. Fold up well
C. Extend/Retract well to accomodate your head size

4. Look good and feel sturdy, though some other reviews here indicate otherwise

5. Blocking external noise
While I was looking for headphones that would block a fair amount of ambient noise, I use these headphones at my work desk too and would like to take the call if the telephone rings ;) I think they do a good job. Listening to music at an average volumes, I can just hear the phone ring.

DISLIKES:
1. Potentially uncomfortable for long usage
It took me a couple of days to figure out a position where my ear lobes don't hurt because of wearing these. Since then, I've used them for upto about 2 hours at a time, without really feeling uncomfortable. These are my 4th set of headphones in a year, and I think they are reasonably comfortable. But the shape of the phone's pad is such that people could potentially find it uncomfortable if not worn correctly

Overall, a great budget headphone!

I picked up a pair of these headphones at Sears simply because they were the only ones there that had a halfway decent range and I needed something cheap for my portable MD. I was blown away when I plugged them in and put them on. Never have I had a pair of headphones this comfortable. They're so light and well fitting that I sometimes forget that I'm wearing them. But in the end it's all about the sound, and these babies put up like no other in their price range. Clean, clear, crisp bass like I've never heard in a pair of headphones. The clarity extends through the entire range. Simply put, buy them! they're the best deal available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product for an excellent price, October 2, 2002

I recently purchased these headphones after my Technics DJ1200 broke (again), and I have to say I'm happily surprised. I use these mainly for my laptop and the overall sound quality is *very* high, especially for this price. I can't comment on the durability as I just got these. The only downfall (and it is very slight) is that there is some noise leakage from the outside world, so if you're ridding the subway you will have to turn up the volume. However, if you want a headphone that will handle compressed music files and CD's very well, give these a shot, you can't lose at this price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for the price!, December 20, 2003

I recently bought a pair of Sennheiser PCX 250 and also a pair of Sennheiser HD 280. I was interested in pure reference sound quality. I also borrowed a pair of Bose QuietComfort and Triport phones from my friends to compare. I also own the HP550's.

Here is what I found out....

the Bose systems do not reproduce reference sound - they automatically add emotion to it. They are not for purists or audiophiles , they are for the common listener with extra cash
that wants the best system and the oomph factor, without having
the best sound source...

The Sennheisers offer a pure reference sound. Crystal Clear.

However all these cost between $80-$300. For $25 the Phillips
is FANTASTIC. The BASE rocks/treble is fantastic/mid range is a bit lacking. The phones nicely fold up/look good and are light.
They DO however become uncomfortable after a few hours of continous wear. So watch out

But they OFFER THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK. If I heard them without knowing the price I might have thought they costed atleast a 100 bucks.. I fully recommend these to anyone who
wants clear music with a good punch of Bass. I have had these for 2 1/2 years and they serve me very well. Go for it

Also, the plastic support for the sliding frame chipped in a few weeks, I patched it up with tape, but a bigger piece broke again, so the headphones were effectively ruined. There's a reason why it's on clearance, clearly it's not worth the full price (build quality, comfort). I will probably try a Sennheiser the next time round.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great set of headphones, but..., July 3, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips HP550 Full Size Foldable Headphones (Electronics)
I am a big fan of Philips products. I have never ever ever had any problems with their products, and the HP550 reinforces my confidence in the company. I was looking for a good, yet moderately priced set of headphones to listen to mp3s from my laptop and from my mp3-CD player. Granted, Im not an expert in headphones, but I wanted good quality. I took this on a 17 hour flight and was VERY pleased with the sound. It really blocked out the noisiness of the aircraft, and the music sounded very clear and crisp. I was very attracted to the design, and they fold over very easily. The cord is wrapped around the blue prongs, which is a very smart idea. Storage is easy once you have the headphones collapsed and the cord wrapped up.

The one complaint that I have abt the HP550 is that it isn't very comfortable after many hours of continual use. I usually use the headphones everyday when Im working at my laptop, and I will wear them for hours at a time. I know that this may sound odd, but I could feel my face and jaw tense up all the time as a result of constant use. So, I think that I may shop around for another pair of headphones that I can wear comfortably for long durations.

Overall, this is a very good set of headphones for plane rides and only maybe short periods of use. But if you're a power-user stuck to a computer at work all the time, and intend to use them for hours on end everyday, you may want to consider something more comfortable or lighter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Stay- At - Home Phones, April 19, 2002
This review is from: Philips HP550 Full Size Foldable Headphones (Electronics)
Me and my Mp3 player, are everywhere around town. So I am constantly looking for good headphones. I have had 3 pair scince I got the Mp3 player 6 pair combined with the old cd player. When I got these I thought they were awsome at first. True they sound great, true they are comfortable, but they are by now means durable. I droped them once in a bathroom, and the fall to the floor, cracked the inside plastic, facing the ear on the headband. So I took it home fixed it and then they got droped again. The "C" claw that pivots the headphone, broke. Each time I tried to fix it it was to no avail. The one other thing I will give to it's credit, it that it does fold up. If you like headphones that you can really shut out the rest of the world with and then when you need to do some talking and put your phones away, these will fold up neatly into a jacket pocket. If you buy them, try not to love them too much, cuz they won't love you back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Headphones, Superb Value, February 18, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Philips HP550 Full Size Foldable Headphones (Electronics)
These foldable Philips headphones don't just look really cool, they sound great and are comfortable too. These are the best headphones available in their price class... The sound is superb, with nice low bass tones and clean treble. The headphones don't block all outside noise by themselves, but can be turned up more than loud enough to eleminate any outside distraction. They are also really really comfortable, which may be one of its strongest features. Sometimes it doesn't feel like you're even wearing anything, and you'll forget they're on your head. They even fold up, and are built with metal hinges for extra durability. The only possible down-side is the short cord, it is only approximately 4 feet. So if you need a longer cord for whatever reason than these may not be right for you. But besides that- these are really nicely designed, excellent sounding, affordable headphones - being offered at an even lower price by Amazon. I was very pleased with these, and would recommend them to anyone looking for headphones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just WOW!, October 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips HP550 Full Size Foldable Headphones (Electronics)
This pair is simply amazing... I never thought I could get this kind of quality with just 30 bucks, but now I do. I'm not giving it a 5 star rating because there are still better headphones out there, just none under the [X] tag (I checked ^_^). Also, I'm not so sure about how long it'll last if I continously fold and unfold it, but I don't need to worry about that much since it's on my head whenever it's with me. Its hinges are metal reinforced and very sturdy and the structure in general is amazingly durable compared to other headphones. If you're looking for a new set and you don't happen to be a DJ, then this is exactly what you're looking for.
