This is a decent sound system. We got this for the bedroom for our Apple TV because the Insignia TV's built in speakers are horrible. Our bedroom is small so we needed something compact.

The speakers are small, and so is the DVD/receiver.

We haven't watched any DVDs on it so I can't speak to that feature, but here are the pros and cons.

Pros: the sound is quite good, and it gets loud enough. We've never turned it up past 40 and that was plenty loud. The price was good (we got it on sale for $90 at Fred Meyer). It has optical audio and HDMI so the sound and picture are very good. The speakers are light and small and the main DVD/receiver isn't very big. Most other similar systems had incredibly deep or wide units, but this one is pretty compact and can fit in smaller places.

Cons: The remote is terrible. You'll need a universal. The IR blaster or the buttons just don't seem to work like they should. I have to hit a button 3-6 times for it to register. But then when I use my nice universal, it works first time every time. Also, THERE ARE NO VOLUME CONTROLS ON THE UNIT ITSELF. This was actually a big bummer. So if you ever lose your remote or temporarily can't find it, you cannot turn the volume up or down. This is very stupid in my opinion.

My only other nitpic is that the LCD display is very cheap as well. It seems to only be capable of displaying a few letters, so for example, Mute is shown as an n, a dash, and a ute:

N\ute
Other things it displays look like gibberish and take awhile to figure out what they're saying. Luckily for us the volume numbers are all we really need the LCD for, and those look fine. It was just something strange we noticed.

Overall, it's a decent unit and the price was good. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for it, but aside from the crummy remote and lack of volume buttons on the receiver, it's not bad.

For the price this is a solid five-star. But as a product this is entry level at best and 3 stars may be a bit optimistic. As others have said the remote control is awful and the unit display screen speaks a language not yet deciphered by the western world. You really just have to guess what you are doing and hope for the best. We purchased this system for our travel trailer and after a 20-minute install it has really proven to be perfect for the conditions. I would purchase it again as a secondary (or perhaps a backup???) system.

Great value! Only one flaw. Removing the speaker wires with their special connectors after they've been inserted. There's a tiny lttle lock on the clip and won't allow removal, to my abilities.
