This is the first time I've ever offered a review of any purchase I've made, but felt the need to write a few words about this Philips sound bar. Since I have a 3 yr old 46" Philips LCD TV, I wanted to find a sound bar made by Philips. I researched many models and prices. This Philips HTL2151/F7 is very similar to the 2123 model (which I hear is the older versions) but the 2151 has front mounted lights/indicators whereas the older 2123 only has them on the top...where they can't be seen. The front lights do not show any levels for vol, bass, or treble, but will blink when full range is achieved from the little remote. The sound is great in both the standard mode and the "surround sound" mode and the volume is more than loud enough for me, and probably most people in their living rooms or family rooms. My only issue was my big flat screen TV did not have a jack for the recommended optical coax cable...so I just connected the optical cable directly into the back of my Cable DVR set top box thereby bypassing the TV itself. Of course you can also use other types of cables if needed. You need to mute the TV when using the sound bar, or you'll hear an annoying echo effect in the room. The best sound achieved is when only using the sound bar anyway....which is why we buy these things anyway, right?? An additional benefit of bypassing the TV is that I can broadcast Cable generated music only channels thru the sound bar without the need to even turn on the TV. It's like have a Bose Wave radio in my living room. You can also directly connect to the sound bar your auxiliary audio sets, or an audio loaded flash drive in the USB port on the top of the bar. There is also a jack for head phones on the top of the bar. Go to www.philips.com and download or read the Quick Set Up manual or Owner's manual for more details. I highly recommend this sound bar to anyone not wanting to spend a small fortune on more fancy set ups. I bought mine at WalMart 06/08/13 for only $98! From where I come from....that's hard to beat for a great sound.

After my 32" tv developed a problem where low sounds would cause the bass to rattle the TV's own body, I knew a soundbar would be a cheaper alternative than having the TV repaired. I went through two different soundbars in the same price range. I tried a Sceptre that sounded distorted and a Vizio which.... was too tall for my 32" TV, even though it was advertised for a 32" TV. It was placed in front of the TV base and it covered about an inch of the visible screen which annoyed me. I finally decided on the Philips, which for the same price, included a sub woofer. I couldn't be any happier. The soundbar sounds great, and that's really all it comes down to. It's a great inexpensive soundbar that, for the price of others in the same range, includes a subwoofer. That can't be beat. It's also only about 2 inches tall, which is a perfect size if you don't want to fiddle around with mounting it to a wall. Fits right on a dresser in front of a 32"inch TV without blocking the screen.

I researched this product and much of the complaints about it turned out true. It`s true, the remote is small and light. It also appears I am stuck with it, as I haven`t been able to integrate the soundbar into my universal remote. It`s true that there are no bars to show how far the sound is turned up. That all has to be judged entirely by ear. It`s also true that when you cut this soundbar off the sound defaults back to zero. It`s true that you only have two settings, surround and standard, and the surround sounds kinda strange...

Now, with that out of the way, the sound this set produces in standard mode is outstanding, ridiculously superior to the speakers that came with my LCD TV. This set has taken my TV viewing experience to a whole new level. The soundbar and large sub woofer also have a quality feel to them, which is consistent with what I have come to expect from the Philips brand. The best part though is the present price. I paid $50 for a factory refurb with warranty. You could spend several times that amount, get some more features, but little more in the way of power and sound quality. Thus I give this product five stars, as the sound and price I paid make the other limitations forgivable.

I do recall another complaint where someone claimed they had difficulty adjusting the volume with the remote. I`m not having that problem. There is a light on the front of the soundbar that blinks with each increment as I press the up or down switch. But I sit fairly close to the TV, about six feet away.

P.S. I`ll ad that the "audio in" setting works very well with my android phone along with the 3.5mm male to male cable that I purchased separately. I simply plug in my phone, put the music player app on shuttle, and my songs are played through the soundbar. The sound quality is a big upgrade from my computer speakers.

Good value and compact size were the reasons we bought it, and it delivers on those points.
One annoyance, however: The unit doesn't remember your last volume setting. Specifically the volume is too loud when you first turn it on and you must manually turn the volume down. Not a big annoyance, unless you're a baby or a spouse trying to sleep...then the annoyance becomes a problem.

Ater installing and buying an optical cable it finally worked on my 46 inch Sony. The included remote worked but very slowly and I could not sync it with my cable (Charter) remote or on any other universal remote that I had. After three days the volumn remote stopped working entirely. The seller was very prompt and most gracious with return instructions and prepaid label. The sound quality was adequate when it was working, however I'm not going to replace it with the same model.

The sound quality was great and it worked for about 6 months after I purchased it. Then I started to get a small crackle sound in the background. Eventually it got worse and worse until one day the sound completely cut out and it just started buzzing and crackling and nearly ruptured my eardrums. I had to unplug it and haven't used it much since. If I try to use it I can usually get it to work for 10-15 minutes before it freaks out again. It smelled like burning plastic when I smelled the bottom where the vents are. So I opened it up and nothing that I could see seemed burned. But there was 1 wire that had been pinched between a screw and a hard place during assembly. The wire was pinched pretty bad but the plastic coating wasn't broken. I just figure that internally the wires are damaged.

Good looking speakers with decent sound but horrible surround mode. The surround mode creates a hollow sound with a distinct echo. I compared them with the CSS2123B/F7 and the difference was huge. Got both for the same price of $49 (Groupon and Walmart) and returned this one..

I would have loved to give this a better ratting but don't hold your breathe on this product. It was to good to be true when I bought it and I should have known better. The overall sound is very good and the sub woofer with it is great too... I'm still in shock that this sound bar only lasted 5 weeks and then poof, it completely died out... While I was watching Rachel Ray it went to commercial and then the sound bar went completely silent. I thought it was the tv but NO. It shows power to the bar itself but no output and No its not on the wrong setting..... I checked my tv plugs and they are all still in working order. I had to go and purchase a sound bar from Walmart because I hated how my regular tv speakers sounded after being used to having this mini luxury. I'm so disappointed with this product for completely screwing me for dieing when it did and it being 1 week over the 30 days return policy with the company I purchased it from. When i contacted the company they didn't seem to care and all they have to say is to Talk to Amazon....... Not even an I'm sorry or here 10% off... Just you need to talk to amazon and here is there 1800 #. RIDICULOUS!!!!! Horrible customer service!!!!!!!! WILL NOT BUY FROM THEM AGAIN

The sound bar itself works fine. I have mine nearly a year already and never use it. The reason being that the remote is slow to response to volume control and most irritating is when you keep trying to increase or lower the volume in my case it will change the source input of my TV. Example if I'm watching on HDMI 1 it will switch over to TV. For this not to happen I have to click 3 times on the volume button and wait for the sound bar to react if I click more then 3 times in a row it will interfere with the TV and change the source input. It will take at least a minute or 2 to get the volume going, it's easier to go to the sound bar and raise the volume there. I suspect the reason for this is that each time the unit is shutdown it will default to zero volume meaning each time you put the sound bar on you need to increase the volume. I called PHILIPS service center and explained and they told me that my TV is the problem. I'm done with this sound bar.
