3.0 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray player 1st, home theater system 2nd December 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this system for a Philips 46" LED-LCD TV. I've connected the TV to the unit with a digital audio cable.

A major flaw with the design of this system is that it forgets the source setting when you turn it off. When turned on, it defaults to the Blu-Ray player as the source for sound. In my case, when I want to hear the sound of my TV, I set the source to the TV's digital audio cable. When I turn the home theater system off, when turning it back on, the system "forgets" it was on the digital audio setting. So every time I want to watch TV with this unit, I have to turn the unit on and press "source" on the button 5 times before I can hear the sound.

This system was designed with the assumption that most consumers will use it primarily as a Blu-Ray player, and that's why the unit always defaults to the player as the source for sound. On 12/20/10, I spoke to Philips tech support and they confirmed the unit was designed this way. They don't have any software or firmware updates to resolve this problem. The only way I've worked around this problem is by purchasing a Philips universal remote (#SRU8112, about $35 on amazon.com) which has a macro feature. With the macro, the remote automatically sends the "source" signal 5 times for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars It malfunctioned within 1 week! February 24, 2011
I purchased this on a Thursday and the actual box started making a loud noise by Wednesday. Mind you, I only watched 20 minutes of a movie on the player the entire time I had it. I tried finishing the movie days later and that's when it started making a noise that was similar to someone trying to start a car engine that won't start. I tried some troubleshooting and spoke to Philips who confirmed it was a brick. I took it back to Target and got my money back. I was just thankful that this happened so much sooner than later. Another thing that bugged me ( and others that posted a review) was the fact that you have to set the audio source each time you turned it on. I found a great deal on the Samsung HTC6600 at a different retailer.

3.0 out of 5 stars This ia very good System, NOT A total theater system October 31, 2010
istem has great sound, is super easy to install and took me less than 30 minutes to connect, get set up and start watching movies on it.

the only thing i do not like about it, is that it is not a true surround sound system. what i mean is that it is only the dvd/bluray surround. there is no connection for you to connect your cable/dish box to it.

i love the sound and this item is exactly what i needed but if you are looking for a system that enables surround sound all of the time and not just when you are watching a disc then this system is not for you.

overall great item though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amazon.com description is Wrong! No IPOD DOCK! January 4, 2011

I purchased this item as a christmas present for my mom and dad and while the unit sounds great and the blueray player is
really sharp...i am still dissapointed! First of all: Amazon's product description is WRONG! NO IPOD DOCK IS INCLUDED!!!

The second issue with this system was mentioned by another reviewer but i want to confirm what he said. When you turn off the
reciever the audio playback forgets that you had set it to an alternate sound source such as you would do if you wanted to
hook up your cable box audio out. So the next time you turn it back on the sound has defaulted back to Blueray and you have to
hit the audio source button multiple times to get to coaxial/optical/etc. input that you hooked your cable box to. For many
people this may not be a problem but for 75 year old parents who are not very technically savy this is not good!

Another issue i noticed was that you can not update the firmware on the player using the SD Card slot! You only get 2 options:
1. Update via internet (Can be a problem if you only have wireless internet because you have to run a network cable)
2. Update via cd recordable (People with limited or no computer skills will have trouble with this method-Unzipping and Burning CD-R)

Final issue i have with this system is that for the price they are charging they should at least include a wireless adaptor for internet access!
Especially when you have a system that has internet radio and netflix!

I wanted a simple to operate surround system for my parents and i am not sure this system fits the bill. I may have to return it and get a cheap surround
reciever and speakers instead.

3.0 out of 5 stars no ipod dock November 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
If you are looking for an iPod dock with this system, as it states, there is none. I ordered this system just because it offered that, otherwise, I could have got it at Target for 299.00. They sent the same thing that was in Target without the iPod dock.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wish they had Negative Stars March 11, 2012
By chrish
I wish I could rate this below 1 star. Blu-ray player failed 2 months out of warranty - press power, "Philips" displays, then powers off. Unplugged, sat for 1 minute, plugged in, same issue. Cust service tech said this was a common problem for the unit. Phillips gave grace period on warranty and sent me new unit (awesome!), which itself failed with same symptoms. New unit had 90-day warranty, but got busy and called on 94th day - Philips would not budge and would not help. When it worked, it was nice to stream Netflix. I've heard other people complain about Philips products and now I see why. My advice - buy anything other than Philips brand.
