Gently Cleans Teeth with Sonic Technology

Removing up to two times more plaque than a manual toothbrush, the Philips Sonicare Essence 5600 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush uses powerful Sonic technology to clean teeth with up to 31,000 strokes per minute. These sweeping motions drive fluids deep into the tight spaces between your teeth and along your gum line, resulting in a cleaner, healthier mouth. The Essence 5600 is gentle enough to use on veneers, braces, implants, and sensitive teeth.

Contoured Bristles and Soft-Grip Handle for Comfort

With smooth, contoured bristles that correspond to the natural shape of your teeth, this Sonicare toothbrush delivers a thorough, comfortable brushing experience. Its angled neck provides optimal reach for the bristles, which have extra-soft rounded ends that go deep between teeth to remove plaque and reduce gingivitis. The blue soft-touch grip makes the handle easy to hold and maneuver while brushing.

Easy-Start and Smartimer Simplify Brushing

You need only to apply light pressure when guiding this toothbrush over your teeth--the Essence 5600 will do the work for you through its high speed bristle motion and dynamic cleaning action. The easy-start option gently increases the toothbrush's power over the first 12 uses to help you adjust to using a power toothbrush. The Smartimer feature sets brushing time to two minutes, the time recommended by dental professionals, and shuts the toothbrush off after that cycle.

Convenient for Travel

A soft travel case and hygienic travel cap are included for convenience. An indicator on the brush displays remaining battery life and blinks when you need to recharge.

What's in the Box

Sonicare Essence brush handle, e-Series Standard brush head, charger base, soft travel case, and travel cap.

This electric toothbrush is Sonicare's lowest level model. It has the basic features that come with every Sonicare, even the cheapest 39.99 one. I have owned a Sonicare for over 10 years and have had 3 different models. Can I tell the difference between the 3 models I have owned....not really. I brush my teeth for the 2 minutes and any other features usually don't get used on a daily basis when I am rushing to get to work or to go out with friends. The reason why I take two stars away from this toothbrush is because of a flaw in the style of this toothbrush. This particular brush allows for water, toothpaste and oral fluids to get inside of the toothbrush. The toothbrush mechanism goes over the body of the handle and twists off. Water and other fluids get inside of the toothbrush causing it to rust and malfunction if you do not clean it out often. Because of this flaw which is the exact same style as my original Sonicare, I could not wait to upgrade to the Philips Sonicare HX6711/02 HealthyWhite 710 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush in 2010. It was gross to have to keep cleaning the inside of the toothbrush mechanism. If you look at the pictures of each of these toothbrushes, you will see that this one twists over the handle while the one I bought in 2010 is all one piece and you don't have to worry about oral fluids getting into the toothbrush. For 5 dollars more you can get the HX6711 HealthyWhite toothbrush which I feel is far superior to this toothbrush. The travel case is nice but, I would rather put my toothbrush head in a zip-lock bag for travel then buy this toothbrush just for the case.Read more ›

I picked this up to replace a sonicare with a dead battery....
it works great... and dont be fooled... all the other versions of sonicare
work exactly the same as this one does.... it just does not have

bluetooth...programmable... internet capability smart technology... blah blah blah whatever...

and who cares... its a frickin toothbrush... the last one of these I had was one step up the scale and it went off after 2 min to inform me I was done... seriously.... I can figure that out on my own....

this one does something radical.... it cleans your teeth.... and leaves you the hell alone.... Id call that pretty perfect!

I've been a Sonicare user for a number of years based on the recommendation of my dentist. I've had to have quite a lot of reconstructive dental work and my dentist wise surmised that I want it to keep in its current condition as long as possible and he recommended Sonicare as stacking the deck in my favor. I'm sold on Sonicare in general.

Should you get a Sonicare? Yes. Without a doubt.

This particular unit, the HX5610/01, is actually my 2nd Sonicare. It's what I will call the 'basic' model and I consider my 'weekend house' toothbrush. I also have the Philips Sonicare HX6732/02 HealthyWhite R732 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush, a 'deluxe' version, that I consider my day-to-day Sonicare. Both units are the crème of the crop tools when it comes to cleaning teeth. What sets the 'basic' model apart from my 'deluxe' Sonicare is seemingly minor, but is worth mentioning. To appreciate the difference, you have to know how you use the brush.

To properly use Sonicare, you use it for 2 minutes. Exactly 2 minutes. 30 seconds on the top teeth on the outside, 30 second on the top teeth on the inside of your mouth, 30 seconds on the bottom teeth on the outside, and finally 30 seconds on the bottom teeth on the inside of your mouth.

The 'deluxe' model has a small 'beep' every 30 seconds to keep you on track. The 'basic' model has no beep, no cues to keep you moving along. It seems minor, and in the scheme of life, it is. It's just that I really find my self *wanting* that feature on the 'basic' model. It's just not there. This seems like a fairly arbitrary omission on Philips' part.

This is the lowest end model, and does the job just fine. However, it does not have the 30-sec timer notification feature so it just runs for 2-minutes straight.

Briefly, for a lot less than half the price, the Essence offers the essential benefits of the higher-end Sonicare products and it should be a good buy for both existing Sonicare users who don't care about paying a premium for a higher end models' bells and whistles and for new/undecided users who would like to try out Sonicare without spending a lot in the process. I am very happy with the product and, despite it lacking some of the higher end models features (see below) the Essence is going to replace my current Sonicare brush.

Background: my records show that I've been using a Philips Sonicare Advance 4100 Sonic Power Toothbrush since May, 2008 and I used a Sonicare toothbrush before that which should qualify me as both a 'loyal customer' and, hopefully, a knowledgeable reviewer for the Essence.

The Essence shares some key features with most other Sonicare products:

* VIBRATION METHOD - Cleaning takes place because the brush head vibrates hundreds of times per second. This usually results in 'love at first try' or immediate rejection. It was instant love for me but my wife simply can't stand the vibration and she will never use a Sonicare product so... try before you buy. Philips will allow you to return the product for a full refund if you are not fully satisfied with your purchase.
* REPLACEABLE HEADS - The most controversial aspect of Sonicare is the relatively pricey brush heads. They only last 3 months (4-6 months is possible but anything beyond that is not recommended) and they are not cheap whether you use a high end or a low end model.
