I purchased the Philips Sonicare HX5610 based on personal recommendation from my dentist (and close friend). I have been undergoing a `rejuvenation' of sorts. In the past 6 months I've made it my goal (with the help of my dentist) to have the healthiest, cleanest and whitest smile possible in preparation for my best friend's wedding. The first step was to upgrade my toothbrush from my old manual toothbrush, to the Sonicare. I chose this because he said it was what he used at home, and it was somewhat economical compared to the other options he mentioned. This is also the reason why I chose this teeth whitening solution as opposed to using his services - he said it would cost me $500 dollars, then laughed and gave me the 2nd option!

I am very happy that my dentist is an honest person who will recommend solutions to me not based on personal gain, but on quality. He said the way to use this product is as follows. You'll want to use this product for exactly 2 minutes, 30 seconds on each quadrant of your mouth. Think about your mouth's surface as having 4 sections, top front, top back (behind), bottom front, and bottom back. There is an easy 2 minute indicator that is built into this brush, which makes it easy to remember when you're done. Or you can simply watch a 2 minuteyoutube video, which is what I do to kill time while brushing! J (pro tip!)

I was also worried about gum and teeth sensitivity due to how fast these things go. It's the equivalent to 31,000 brush strokes per minute. I asked my dentists about this, and he said don't worry about it too much, as long as you're not using a tooth-paste with heavy abrasive, because the combination of abrasive action and strokes can do more harm than good if used frequently and often. He recommended to only use a teeth-whitening toothpaste like this one and a teeth whitening system like this one every-so-often to keep your mouth from becoming overly sensitive.

This electric toothbrush is Sonicare's lowest level model. It has the basic features that come with every Sonicare, even the cheapest 39.99 one. I have owned a Sonicare for over 10 years and have had 3 different models. Can I tell the difference between the 3 models I have owned....not really. I brush my teeth for the 2 minutes and any other features usually don't get used on a daily basis when I am rushing to get to work or to go out with friends. The reason why I take two stars away from this toothbrush is because of a flaw in the style of this toothbrush. This particular brush allows for water, toothpaste and oral fluids to get inside of the toothbrush. The toothbrush mechanism goes over the body of the handle and twists off. Water and other fluids get inside of the toothbrush causing it to rust and malfunction if you do not clean it out often. Because of this flaw which is the exact same style as my original Sonicare, I could not wait to upgrade to the Philips Sonicare HX6711/02 HealthyWhite 710 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush in 2010. It was gross to have to keep cleaning the inside of the toothbrush mechanism. If you look at the pictures of each of these toothbrushes, you will see that this one twists over the handle while the one I bought in 2010 is all one piece and you don't have to worry about oral fluids getting into the toothbrush. For 5 dollars more you can get the HX6711 HealthyWhite toothbrush which I feel is far superior to this toothbrush. The travel case is nice but, I would rather put my toothbrush head in a zip-lock bag for travel then buy this toothbrush just for the case. Not having to deal with cleaning the inner casing of the toothbrush in order to keep the toothbrush working properly is not worth the price in my opinion. If you want an electric toothbrush with the simple features such as the 2 minute timer....get the lower priced model on Amazon. Why this toothbrush is 70 dollars, I have no idea. It looks and feels like the 40 dollar brush that Amazon sells.

I've attached a picture here to show the mild issues in a less than 2 month old Sonicare toothbrush of this design. It was a replacement for another one (same type) that become unusable due to how much gross, smelly gunk/mold built up inside under the replaceable brush head.

I would skip this design and go for the kind with the thinner brush head, not this big hollow design. The other type is way easier to clean and lasts much longer!

I've been a Sonicare user for a number of years based on the recommendation of my dentist. I've had to have quite a lot of reconstructive dental work and my dentist wise surmised that I want it to keep in its current condition as long as possible and he recommended Sonicare as stacking the deck in my favor. I'm sold on Sonicare in general.

Should you get a Sonicare? Yes. Without a doubt.

This particular unit, the HX5610/01, is actually my 2nd Sonicare. It's what I will call the 'basic' model and I consider my 'weekend house' toothbrush. I also have the Philips Sonicare HX6732/02 HealthyWhite R732 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush, a 'deluxe' version, that I consider my day-to-day Sonicare. Both units are the crème of the crop tools when it comes to cleaning teeth. What sets the 'basic' model apart from my 'deluxe' Sonicare is seemingly minor, but is worth mentioning. To appreciate the difference, you have to know how you use the brush.

To properly use Sonicare, you use it for 2 minutes. Exactly 2 minutes. 30 seconds on the top teeth on the outside, 30 second on the top teeth on the inside of your mouth, 30 seconds on the bottom teeth on the outside, and finally 30 seconds on the bottom teeth on the inside of your mouth.

The 'deluxe' model has a small 'beep' every 30 seconds to keep you on track. The 'basic' model has no beep, no cues to keep you moving along. It seems minor, and in the scheme of life, it is. It's just that I really find my self *wanting* that feature on the 'basic' model. It's just not there. This seems like a fairly arbitrary omission on Philips' part. This omission is the only reason I have given this brush 4 stars instead of 5.

There are some cosmetic differences between the 2 units. The 'basic' unit is heavier than the 'deluxe' model. Lastly, you can't share brush heads between these 2 units because they have different connectors at the base of the brush heads.

I prefer the more expensive model, but for double the price, I'm not sure its 'must-have' feature I find so valuable in the more expensive model should sway you to the more expensive version. You may not miss it at all. Especially if I hadn't told you about it. Sorry about that.

Wow! I've been brushing my teeth wrong my whole life.

This toothbrush is amazing! I'll just say this:

With a manual brush, I notice a film of plaque reforming after 12 hours or so. I thought this was normal.
Well, imagine my surprise when after using the Sonicare, my teeth remained squeaky clean for 3 DAYS! Yes, I experimented to see how long I could go without accumulating plaque. This device cleans the mouth SO thoroughly, it's scary; the junk I spat out after the first use was truly frightening! All that bacteria that had been damaging my smile were dislodged with stunning completeness! The Sonicare literally vibrates the plaque out from under the gum-line!

I sincerely wish you try this item for yourself. You will not be disappointed!

BTW, in the case of travelling overseas - when fully charged, you'll get about 20 uses on a single charge...enough for a 10 day trip.

A note about the design: I advise simply unscrewing the brush-head after every few uses and cleaning it with peroxide or just plain H2O. This will keep any gunk from accumulating inside the apparatus. It takes about 20 seconds to clean it, so it no big deal, IMO.

This model is economically priced and functions flawlessly to give you a clean you thought only a trip to the dentist could give.

If you find my review helpful, please give it an up-vote; I really appreciate your feedback!

Thanks,
Peter

I've been using this for about a year, and I've had no problems with it. People complain about the inside getting gross, but that's because they themselves are gross and don't clean it. Here's the cleaning ritual I have after every brush:

1. unscrew the top
2. rinse the handle
3. place handle on base
4. pop off the brush
5. rinse the screwy thing and the brush
6. pop brush back into the screwy thing
7. place the brush onto the handle (don't screw it back on, just place it on top) such that it's tilted, allowing the insides to air out

This whole process takes like 12 seconds and costs about a tenth of a calorie, so don't even worry about it.

The other thing people complain about is that this brush doesn't beep every 30 seconds or whatever, but that's also a non-issue. You're unable to brush your teeth if you don't know whether 30 seconds have passed? I don't think so. I think you CAN do it. Just believe in yourself.

The unit is solid, very straightforward, and gets the job done. My last dentist visit was significantly better than when I was using a regular brush (of course, YMMV depending on your oral hygiene). It's hard to imagine needing another electric brush. It's also good for traveling; for trips shorter than 2 weeks, you don't even need the base, because the battery lasts about 2 weeks. Lastly, if you have sensitive teeth, you can buy sensitive replacement head assembly thingies (whatever they're called), which I've been using for the past month or so.

This is the lowest end model, and does the job just fine. However, it does not have the 30-sec timer notification feature so it just runs for 2-minutes straight.

I picked this up to replace a sonicare with a dead battery....
it works great... and dont be fooled... all the other versions of sonicare
work exactly the same as this one does.... it just does not have

bluetooth...programmable... internet capability smart technology... blah blah blah whatever...

and who cares... its a frickin toothbrush... the last one of these I had was one step up the scale and it went off after 2 min to inform me I was done... seriously.... I can figure that out on my own....

this one does something radical.... it cleans your teeth.... and leaves you the hell alone.... Id call that pretty perfect!

I am also surprised Sonicare is still making this model. I have owned Sonicares for years, probably bought 6-7 of them and my whole family has them. There have been several generations of Sonicare, and up until the most recent generation, they had two critical flaws in my book, and this model shares those flaws: (1) they only work on 110v - so if you travel outside the Americas, you have to carry a heavy converter (not adapter, voltage converter) or else they burn out and (2) the brush head is poorly designed so that water and saliva goes down into a reservoir inside which becomes a gunky stinky mess. The entry level new design corrects both of these problems and is available on Amazon for about $10 more than this one -- and well worth it. It's called the Sonicare Easy Clean. Philips Sonicare HX6511/50 Easy Clean Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush

Hope this helps... if you order this brush, just know about the two flaws above... other wise, like all Sonicares, it provides excellent cleaning and you'll love using it. If price is your main consideration over all else, this is the model... otherwise spend a little bit more for the Easy Clean.

Hope this helps!

If you get "addicted" to your Sonicare (especially the ultrasonic version, which my dentist claims works well to prevent gum disease) you often will want an electric toothbrush along for travel. But I'm nervous about losing an expensive brush such as the Ultrasonic while traveling. So this brush, is a good compromise. It doesn't have the same features as the ultrasonic version, and I don't like the heads (and they are about ten apiece to replace, which is pretty expensive, in my opinion.) But I don't feel as nervous about this brush possibly disappearing on a long trip out of town.

Some downsides: the charger is 110v only, so useless for traveling out of the country--but--it does stay charged for two weeks. (I suppose you can put it on a step-down transformer and you may have one anyway.) Depending on what promotional pack you get, you may not get a soft case (this doesn't have one.) There is a cap for the head, so it will stay clean in your kit.

There are cheaper alternatives: Oral-B Vitality Prowhite Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush costs less, could work as your spare. The battery life is shorter (1 week) so you'd need a charger along for trips.

Summary: for travel or if you don't want to spend a lot for an ultrasonic Philips brush, this is a decent alternative. The heads are expensive, however.
