I have always been a skeptic as far as electric toothbrushes are concerned. They have always seemed like gimmicks until I recently had the opportunity to try one for the first time. It was a Sonicare Diamond Clean. I was particularly skeptical when I read that I wasn't supposed to forcibly brush my teeth with the brush but to apply gentle pressure and let the brush do most of the work. To my surprise my teeth had a remarkable squeaky cleanness to them that I hadn't felt with regular brushing.

The review:

Pros:

- Easy to hold due to small neck.
- Strong vibration. If you need something gentler for sensitive gums you might consider the Diamond Clean product instead which has a "sensitive" setting.
- Includes travel case and charger whose cord wraps neatly inside.
- Induction charger, so there are no metal contacts that can short out when exposed to water.
- Includes a $4 coupon toward a multi-pack brush replacement.
- Brushes last pretty long- about 3-6 months.
- Built-in timer to let you know to switch brushing quadrant so you know you've done your proper 2 minutes.
- Packaging is easy to open.

Cons:

- Can't see any. It is a solidly built product.

Compared to Diamond Clean (DC):

- DC is slicker in design. Think of it as a brush that Apple would build.
- DC is more expensive of course.
- DC comes with a clever glass rinsing cup with the induction charger beneath so after brushing and gargling you can just sit the brush in the glass cup and let it recharge.
- DC has Polish settings which may be useful to some.
- DC has same handle size.

I'm a longtime Oral B user and originally started using electric toothbrushes after my dentist recommended I make the switch back in 2005. Since then I've used a number of different brush brands including Sonicare, Oral B, and Panasonic. About 1.5 years ago I decided to have braces installed on my teeth and still have them. I take oral hygiene very seriously and tend to wear out toothbrush heads very quickly in part due to my braces.

--------------------
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS & SETUP:
The Sonicare Flexcare gets high marks from me for having a very minimalist and simplistic design. The box is deceptively sized and much larger than it needs to be to contain the brush, charger/holder, & a hard plastic travel case. The charger is very small with enough room for holding and charging the toothbrush in the upright position and also enough space to hold two brush heads. The design is pleasing and doesn't take up much real estate on my bathroom vanity. The brush is ready to go out of the box but thereafter will completely charge in about 3hrs. Included in the box is one toothbrush head so if you're buying this toothbrush it's probably a good idea to order another set of brush heads.

--------------------
USE:
Sonicare toothbrushes have a distinctly high pitched sound and feel whilst brushing and the Flexcare Plus is no exception. Philips claims 31,000 brush strokes per minute so it's really no surprise. The included toothbrush head is shaped in the traditional contoured shape of manual toothbrushes but is considerably smaller. I found that the brush head was entirely too soft for my liking and compared to what I'm used to with my Oral B.

I'm a big fan of electric toothbrushes. Since I started using one, my dental health has improved dramatically. I have less plaque, my gums aren't sensitive anymore and I don't need to whiten my teeth very often. It's like having a professional dental cleaning at home. Also, if you're someone who frequently drinks tea, coffee, red wine, colas or grape juice, brushing with an electric toothbrush helps remove surface stains and keep teeth white.

There are quite a few things I like about this Philips toothbrush and a couple that are just okay.

Here are my thoughts on some of the main features and functions:

Settings
There are several settings: clean, sensitive, massage, gum care and refresh. With a press of a button on the brush handle, you can choose which setting you want and the brush automatically adjusts. This is a great feature so you can customize your brushing experience without having to use separate toothbrushes.

Battery/Battery Life
There's a regular charger and a removable mini-travel charger. The travel charger is small and convenient. The charge on the brush lasts much longer than my other toothbrush. There's also a lit battery meter so you know when you need to plug the charger in. So far, I'm very happy with the battery life. If you're taking the brush with you on a short trip, you probably won't even need to take the charger as long as you charge it in advance.

Toothbrush
The toothbrush itself is fairly lightweight and comfortable to hold. The wrap-around rubber grip handle makes it easy to hold without slipping out of your hand. It's quiet to use. The included brush head is a little smaller and more slender than the one I was used to.
