High-Definition Speakers for Balanced Sound

The Fidelio M1 headphones contain 40-millimeter speaker drivers that have been carefully tuned and tested to ensure balanced, natural sound. The drivers use high-power neodymium magnets to deliver high-definition sound in a wide dynamic range and reproduce minute details.

Bass Reflex System for Clear, Dynamic Bass

The acoustic closed-back architecture of these headphones features a Bass Reflex System that includes double-layered ear shells with strategically placed vents and lightweight aluminum hinges. These regulate the air pressure within the internal chamber to isolate natural sound details and deliver precise, dynamic bass, even when you're listening to music outdoors.

Acoustic Seal Keeps Sound In

Built into the M1's internal chamber is a ribbon lock that serves as an acoustic seal to ensure noise isolation and eliminate any unnecessary sound leaks, preserving sound details for an optimal audio experience without compromising clarity.

Tuned Frequency Response for Faithful Reproduction

Philips acoustics engineers have tuned the Fidelio M1 headphones to achieve an optimal balance based on how listeners discern sound. Consequently, the headphones reproduce sound that is faithful to the original recording, offering a frequency response of 15,000 - 24,000 Hz.

Double-Layered Ear Shells Reduce Resonance

The Fidelio M1's double-layered ear shells are made to reduce resonance and dampen vibrations, resulting in precise and clean sound. In addition, their solid, layered construction provides durability and comfort. The fine-stitched headband is made of real leather.

Breathable Ear Pads with Memory Foam

The Fidelio M1 headphones come equipped with breathable ear pads and memory foam that adapts to the shape of your ear to seal in bass sounds and keep out ambient noise. As a result, you can enjoy a comfortable, ergonomic fit and wear the headphones for long periods of time.

Includes Convenient In-Line Remote

With the Apple-compatible in-line remote and microphone, you can switch tracks, adjust volume, and take calls without taking off your headphones or taking your mobile device out of your pocket. The oxygen-free, fabric-lined cable ensures a high-quality signal.

Product Information

These headphones are compatible with the iPhone (3GS, 4, and 4S), iPod classic (120 GB and 160 GB), iPod nano (4th, 5th, and 6th generations), iPod touch (2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations), iPod shuffle (3rd and 4th generations), the iPad, and the iPad 2. They measure 7.1 by 6.5 by 1.7 inches (H x W x D) and weigh 0.37 pounds.

The Philips Fidelio M1s are high-quality but understated headphones designed expressly for use with mobile devices with controls on the cable and no need for an amplifier.

They are extremely appealing visually with nice proportions and high-quality materials handled well: fine-grain black leather, sturdy grey satin-finished aluminum alloy, frank expression of different components as well as connectors such as screws and stitching, braided sheathing on the cable, and subtle markings. The video on Amazon doesn't do justice to the way they look and feel in the hand.

The ear cups and their brackets both swivel to adjust for good fit and to lay flat for storage. The ratcheting mechanism of the headband is impressive: the most precise of any headphones I own, with an incredibly satisfying clicking sound. The headband even has incised scales--and oddly enough, they use fractions of an inch rather than metric units! Philips must have changed this particularly for the U.S. market and it was thoughtful if unnecessary.

The headband and earpads are adequately but not generously cushioned with foam. I normally don't like wearing on-ear headphones but these are quite comfortable: the headband doesn't exert too much pressure, the foam never bottoms out, and they create noticeably less buildup of heat and moisture than similar models. The leather of the headband and the imitation leather of the earpieces are almost indistinguishable.

The only quibble I have with the physical design is that the detachable cable fits onto a little non-replaceable pigtail instead of directly into the headset. Given the thought that obviously went into every detail, there must be a reason for this, though I can't figure it out.

Update: Every so often I revisit this to compare to my other many headphones, and like a few others I've had (very few), the highs are so recessed as to make the M1 (U.S. edition - delayed 4 months from European version) unusable for high fidelity sound. If there were a way to make it usable, Philips would not cooperate on finding the problem.

The Philips M1 has an extremely recessed high frequency response compared to the average high fidelity headphone (the M1 is advertised prominently as having High Fidelity sound). Using Foobar2000 on a desktop PC with various DAC/headphone amp combinations, I played the Shure 1840 headphone flat and EQ'd the treble end of the M1 until it sounded like it had nearly the high frequency response of the 1840. The settings for the M1 were plus 4 db at 3.5 khz, plus 8 db at 5 khz, plus 12 db at 7 khz, and plus 16 db at 10 khz. These settings did not make the M1 sound as good or as bright as the non-bright 1840, but it raised the treble to nearly the same level as the 1840, giving me an approximation of how much the M1's treble is rolled off, which seems to be about 8 db per octave above 2.5 khz. I also made comparisons to other headphones such as the Philips L1, B&W P5 (and P3) and v-moda M80, and the M1's treble was just as far below all of them.

Young people with good hearing may be able to accomodate some high-frequency rolloff in their headphones, but the laws of physics may come back to haunt them in later years if they use headphones that are very treble-shy.

As a commuter city-dweller who seems to go through headphones like water, I was sick of buying cheaper plastic headphones to have them break after a month of use. I thought maybe I should spend a little extra and get something durable and after some use, I believe (knock on wood) these could be perfect headphones.

DURABILITY and DESIGN
There is not a cheap-feeling piece of the M1s. Everything is either aluminum, nice feeling faux? leather, cloth, or rubberized plastic. But, unlike 'sport' or 'active' headphones, these aren't hideous. In my opinion, the industrial design is better looking than any of the $200ish celebrity-backed headphones. They look and feel like "how they used to make 'em", without looking too retro or too rugged.

On top of all of that, these things are LIGHT, lighter than most plastic headphones I've owned. I commute in the morning on the subway, work in a noisy office, and then go home and may work into the night on video, so on some days, I may barely take headphones off and the memory foam ear cups and leather band make it so I feel no fatigue at all.

SOUND
In my opinion, these headphones are masterfully tuned for the music most of us are listening today. They have very clear vocals, and the drums sound so pristine that I have literally turned around while listening to them like they were behind me. The bass however, is not pumped to rattle your head like with Beats. It is strong and focused and feels like it has actual weight. In fact, that's how I would described the sound in general, it has real substance.

Meanwhile, for commuters and office-workers, thanks to how the memory-foam lays on your ear, the isolation is stronger than many electronic noise-isolation headphones I've used.
