For $30 I defy you to do better,

I just purchased these for $30 with free shipping and they arrived in 3 days.
I'm really into sound quality, but also possess the ability to differentiate between my many thousand dollar home theater system and a $30 computer setup. The bass is surprisingly powerful, and more than adequate. The sub vibrates the windows in my office when pushed and with a bass control right on the enclosure you can dial the level to your comfort. The two speakers are bright but who cares, it was $30. For this amount of money I just think the negative reviewers are overly harsh and quite unrealistic. My old speakers were the same size as the satellites in this set and 1/10th as good. If you're complaining about the sound quality of a $30 system this well done you are grossly out of touch. No review of a $30 system should include reviews of mid-range accuracy, sub-sonic cut offs, or any such audiophile speak. Spend the nerding time a bit more wisely. Did I mention they're $30? $30 people.

Second to none at the price,
This review is from: Philips MMS171-PC 2.1 Multimedia Speaker System (Personal Computers)
Philips did their homework with this system. What first caught my attention to the system was the simple and sleek design. These came only in white, and seemed to have been slightly re-designed from what is listed on Amazon (a good change for my all-black desktop). I checked the tech specs for anything particular, and that I did find. The specs were impressive in comparison to other systems on the shelf: 2 x 5.5W satellites, and an 8W subwoofer. In other words, it's not an overpowered sub attached to a couple of cheap satellites as other (and some even much more expensive) 2.1 systems. Ever so ready to fire these up, I opened the box and pulled out the contents. The satellites, sub, volume control, and power supply were all separate. A few more wires than usual and an annoying brick of a power supply (still relatively small) were my only bit of complaint. The plastic and construction seemed sturdy. Assembly was a snap and the system was ready to go in minutes. The power button was located on the back of the sub (a bit hard to reach depending on where you put it), and the sub adjustment knob was on the side. The volume control fell neatly on my desk, and the satellites sat on those unusual stands (might serve a purpose?). I fired the system up, playing a variety of tunes on my PC. I was impressed by the clean mids and highs from the satellites, and the well toned and appropriate bass responses. It has a wooden bass housing and a downward ported sub speaker which stuck cleanly out of the bottom of the housing without protection. This could be a vulnerability, depending on where you put the system. The speakers are much more powerful than I'll ever need them to be (condominium) and can really give a good kick. Recommended to anyone that can spend a bit more money for some extra power and quality.

I bought these speakers because I had purchased an HDTV that had crummy built-in speakers. These auxiliary speakers are excellent. I can't believe the good sound quality in a small package. Way more power than one needs (or can avail oneself of) in a condominium or sitting seven feet from the television. Plus, the quality matches my television needs since I pretty much only watch BBC or CNN -- lots of talk, not much music. Maybe purchasers who rated them low have huge living spaces to send sound around in. Big spaces distort sound. The sound waves bounce off different surfaces differently -- the books on the shelf, the lamp, the sofa, the carpet, the ceiling. You don't see an orchestra hall filled with the stuff that fills a living room. Or maybe these people have so much time on their hands that they are actually able to simply sit and listen. If I put music on, it is background. I would be working on something in the foreground. So I heartily recommend these speakers as a terrific value for the money, depending on what you want them for. The reason I logged on to amazon regarding these speakers is because I want to buy another system for my computer and one for my nephew's computer. If that is not an endorsement, I don't know what is.

These speakers are perfect. I'm really into bass so... WOW... These have it. The speakers there self are a little weak but i'm not complaining. For the price I would think they would be a little crappy but they sound really good. The sub woofer sounds like you would pay $40 for it self. I would recommend this product to anyone.

This 2.1 speaker system isn't going to win any awards, but hey, it doesn't have to. It totally does the job, and at an awesome price. And don't misunderstand me---this isn't "good enough." It's WAY better than that. The subwoofer has a nice warm tone, and that was with the bass only turned up about a 1/3 of the way. The speakers are a little too light for my taste (giving the feeling like they are fragile), but the clarity of the mids and highs is quite nice. I could do without the separate volume knob. It's pretty dorky, and I can totally see it getting lost on my computer desk. But this system is definitely on the plus side of economical. Highly recommended, as long as you're not an audio freak!

I bought this speaker at Walmart for $39.99.
I normally wanted a 5.1 Logitech X-530 but didn't have three audio output plugs so I just bought 2.1 speaker with woofer. The satellite speakers are bit weak but the subwoofer is perfect. It just bangs and bangs with a clear and low tone. It really gets low so you don't need to worry about it not being strong enough. It's defenitely worth to buy considering the price.

This sound system is worth more than what I paid for. It is adaptable to different modes of music, and easy to set up and enjoy.

Good Speakers,
This review is from: Philips MMS171-PC 2.1 Multimedia Speaker System (Personal Computers)
I've had these speakers for about a year now. But they are all white. They must have came out with black after I got my set. I was surprised when I hooked these up! Wow..a lot of base from an 8W subwoofer! Compared to my old altec lansing speakers..10 times better! Finally I gave in not too long ago. I just wanted some higher performance. So I recently ordered some A Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system for around 150 with tax and shipping. These Philips speakers are great If you don't want to pay a lot for a high end system.

I found the sound quality to be very good, I mostly listen to r&b & hip-hop which actually requires more than just "thumping bass" for a fulfilling sonic experience. As another commenter noted, if you live in an apartment you will never be able to avail yourself of full bass or full volume.
However, the wiring for 1 speaker shorted out within a month or 2 of my purchasing the product. 2 years later, the whole entire thing stopped working. No sound came out at all. The power was still on, the little blue light was still illuminated. But there was no sound. I used other speakers, nothing. I know that $50 is not a great deal of money, but if the unit is only going to function for 2 years, it should at least function perfectly within that time. But I also think it should last at least 5 years. |
