Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The Philips MX5000D consists of a Dolby Digital/DTS-capable surround sound receiver with an integrated three-DVD/CD changer, five compact satellite speakers, and a 125-watt powered subwoofer for full throttle theater power. The MX5000D has a Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Pro Logic channel decoder. The DVD drive plays DVD, DVD+RW, and VCDs, as well as CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3 CDs. A full onscreen display simplifies setup and operation. Other video features include zoom, multi-angle viewing, and parental lock. The system's 115-watts-per-channel receiver and 125-watt subwoofer deliver a total of 700 watts of home theater power. The amplifier was designed with special attention to the extreme dynamics possible in DVD movie presentations.

The system's five two-way (three-driver) satellite speakers are acoustically designed to match the tonal characteristics of the receiver. Front left, right, and center speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent any interference with your TV's image. The sixth speaker is a 125-watt subwoofer with a front-firing 6.5-inch woofer and Twinport bass tubes to reflect sound waves off the floor, thereby heightening the overall impact. The tuner offers 30 FM/AM presets.

The receiver features two analog-audio inputs and three analog-audio outputs, along with three digital-audio inputs (two coaxial, one optical). Three video inputs and two video outputs (including the primary monitor output) accommodate other video components. Philips' use of distinct colors for each speaker cable and for each terminal on the speaker and the receiver greatly simplifies speaker setup.

The package contains a remote control, batteries, instruction for use, AM and FM antennas, a quick-installation card, warranty information, six loudspeakers, speaker cable (left/right: two nine-foot lengths; center: nine feet; surround: two 33-foot lengths), a subwoofer connection cable, a digital-audio interconnect, and a composite-video cable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Functional and annoying, but not defective., November 13, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips MX5000D DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
Well, it's NOT a powered subwoofer... no matter what the above description says. The sub enclosure's side panels vibrate as much as the speaker cone. (I'm not kidding.) The sub is used to too-high of a frequency and it's not very clean. Overall, the sound was inferior to a Philips MX995(?) home theater system purchased as a gift for a relative some time back.

So, before returning the system for a refund, I substituted some floor-standing Boston Acoustics speakers highjacked from the stereo system for the front channels. Then I disabled the sub! There's no way to adjust the sub's x-over frequency to complement the new speakers, and it was just too boomy in the upper bass otherwise.

The disc player is incredibly slow to load, and the remote control interface is annoying: You must press the DVD/CD function button before the forward/back buttons will control the player. But when you do this, the disc being played is unloaded and the changer advances to the next disc. Likely an artifact of mixing front panel and remote operations, but doesn't everyone do that?

Very limited video in/out. One S-video output jack, fed only from the DVD player. All other video connections are composite. No component video output. (Phonograph preamp is also absent, but you may not care.) Tuner is OK.

The spouse is satisfied, so I guess the (modified) system stays. But,

my next 'home theater' purchase will not have speakers packaged with the electronics! And since there's no growing room with the supplied electronics package, the next purchase will probably happen when the five-year old TV needs replacing. Hmmm. Better keep shopping!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Lot's of Juice", December 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips MX5000D DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
At 700 Watts, this system has "lots of juice."

No, it doesn't have a lot of inputs/outputs, but it does have what counts...an optical audio input, which is the "best of the best" when it comes to inputs.

I have the system hooked up to my Playstation 2 using the optical audio input and it works great.

This is an excellent system for you if you have the optical audio capabilities.
