Shopping for a DVD player, one basically looks for picture, features, good price and reliability. We picked this machine because it was feature-loaded and on sale at Circuit City. We basically crossed our fingers and hoped the picture was good enough and reliability would work out. We found that this machine does have an impressive array of features. Also, if you are looking for great sound, this is a terrific machine in that respect. However, the picture has been a great disappointment. We noticed lines ("wrinkles") around figures on the screen, a washed out appearance to the screen and none of the 3-dimensional quality that one can find in decent DVD players which also produce a razor-sharp picture, sadly missing from this machine. The movies watched looked like old movies on a rural TV station. At one point in DVD's we have watched, the machine would pause, garble, seem to sputter before getting back on track with reading the DVD--we think this might be due to the layering in DVD's which some machines unfortunately have trouble dealing with. This apparently is one of those. We are disappointed that our attempt to save a few $$ was not successful, but fortunately we have the ability to exchange for another machine from the kind people at Circuit City.

I recently bought this dvd player and I have to say it's incredible. It has the essentials of a good dvd player, but not all the capabalities of reading CD-R's and so-forth. It has great sound options. So, even if you don't have surround sound, it sounds acceptional. The only problem that I've seen is that when you mark your spot in the movie, it only stays there saved as long as you don't eject the dvd or turn the dvd player off. Besides that, this dvd is a great buy with great picture and sound. This is a must get for anybody who just wants a cheap dvd player that has the essentials fulfilled.

It's a good, inexpensive DVD player with few frills,
This review is from: Philips Magnavox DVD611AT DVD Player (Electronics)
When I was searching for info on DVD players I found a few reviews on other web-sites from consumers who had this DVD player and complained that it skipped. Therefore, I bought it with the understanding that it might not met my needs. It has performed wodnerfully. I have not experienced any skipping or other problems with the player. With that said it is a very basic DVD player. There aren't any fancy frills on it, but I wasn't really looking for any. I wanted something that was easy to use, had a component video and audio output, and would do a reliable job of playing my favorite movies. The 621 does that at a price that I liked.

Making the move from laptop to 27" TV DVD has been a thoroughly enlightening experience. This entry level Magnavox player does the job...it played The Matrix and Sleepy Hollow without a hitch. It froze on one movie, until I cleaned a highly used rental disk with dishwashing liquid and hot water, taking the oily fingerprints off it and allowing it to play smoothly. Sound is ravishing, even without the S-video and digital audio hooked up (my old Sony TV doesn't have such connections). And what a price, esp. with the coupons available these days.

I was surprised to read the other negative reviews. We purchased this DVD player, and found it to be a great deal. We have not had a single problem with it - plays the few discs that we have without a problem, and the picture looks great. As far as sound and picture quality, they are great for the price. We had no problems hooking it up (a cinch) and the sound and picture are very clear. For someone looking for their first DVD Player (or an extra for the kids) this is a great buy.

Philips DVD/CD Player DVD621AT,

I am a college student and this summer i decided i wanted to buy a dvd player for my dorm room...the Philips DVD/CD Player DVD621AT has been an excellent player...both in sound and video...have had absolutely no problems...any problem that might occur with video or sound would probably be from the tv or from buying cheap connection cords...do yourself a favor and buy quality heavy duty cords from radio shack rather than the (...) $5 from wal-mart...anyway...this is a great dvd player for a great price...

Absolute Garbage! freezes, skips, refuses to load DVD, buttons on face or remote inoperable while DVD is stuck inside. Don't buy this, just returned mine to Circuit City and purchased a different brand. DVD's that wouldnt work, or worked poorly on Magnavox, work flawlessly on new Machine.

This machine ran fine for a while then we started having problems with it skipping repeatedly and freezing. You can't get the disk out when it has frozen...you have to wait for it to finish "thinking" and that is so annoying! Some days, it works fine, then a rash of skipping and freezing again. Plus, it tends to overheat..the disks would come out very, very warm. Right now, it plays the disk, but there is no sound, so the kids are having to watch their movies on the computer DVD-rom. I think my husband would agree, this player doesn't hold up at all.

Excellent basic DVD player, but does NOT play VCDs!,

I bought this DVD player at Best Buy for a great price ... and have had no trouble in playing any DVDs, such as described in the negative reviews posted prior to this one. The picture looked great-very sharp-and the machine was easy to use. I actually have 2 DVD players; I bought this DVD player to use in my bedroom (so I only needed the basics) and I think this one is better than my other! If your purpose is just to watch DVDs and not to play VCDs or CD-R/CD-RWs, etc., this is a great machine. This Amazon.com review notes that this is a VCD player and it is NOT, so don't be fooled. One note: I did hook it up to my TV with audio/video cables I bought from Best Buy (RCA brand, stereo input/output cables, ...). I don't know if this had an impact, but FYI. The DVD does come with its own input/output cables and batteries for the remote.(For the record: My other DVD player, an RCA, has the following problem: the contrast on-screen while watching any DVD will often turn from very very light to very very dark throughout the movie. Very annoying. But this may be because it was bought refurbished! Just an FYI if you're in the market for a basic machine, don't be cheap and buy something refurbished.)

Easy to Use!,

I got this DVD Player for Father's Day and I really wasn't sure if I wanted it. My wife encouraged me to hook it up and it turns out it is much easier to use than a VCR. We have watched five different movies and I can't imagine going back to video cassettes. It also plays CDs which I wasn't aware of before. The buttons on the remote are a little small but other than that it is very easy to use.
