Good and Bad news,
By Chuck Eichinger (Oshkosh Wisconsin) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Philips Magnavox PR0930X 9" TV (Electronics)
Good news -- This TV is very reasonably priced for the size. It could save much space in our kitchen. The under counter bracket has a much wider turning angle han some competitive units. Picture is bright and reception is good. Sound is adequate - better than some small units. The FM reciever is a great added bonus!Bad News -- Connected to an antenna instead of cable the UHF channels show the wrong channel number. Some TV's have a setting to correct this. The FM tuner doesn't search automatically or save channel settings. Thus, it is not convienent to use with more than one channel. These are both very minor shortcommings that can easily be ignored. Unfortunately, the TV emmits a very annoying high pitch noise that my 16 yr old son can easily hear. It is probably the horizontal scan mechanism radiating noise at 15,750 cycles per second. For this reason we are regretfully returning the TV.

Excellent TV,

I've had this TV now for 4 months and I have to say it's GREAT. Great picture, sound, size. I agree with one other reviewer that the FM tuner not having a pre-set for stations isn't great, but I rarely use that feature anyway, and it's just nice to have the FM tuner there in the first place. Great size. I really wanted to have it with portable capability for use in car or with batteries, but the value is outstanding and I would highly recommend it to anyone. This is the 3rd Phillips Magnavox we've owned in the past 15-20 years, and we've been pleased with them all.

This TV is great for the kitchen. It comes with a bracket for under the cabinets. The best part is the built-in radio! Just wish it was DC too. It really saves space. It is white which looks good in my kitchen. The price and the service from amazon.com was excellent. Thanks for the good deal.

Really annoying hum.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips Magnavox PR0930X 9" TV (Electronics)
We got this TV for the size (or lack thereof), but the low hum it emits was very irritating. It is particularly noticeable with the volume down and in a small room, which was how it was mainly used. I had to return it.

I had been searching for a 9" TV for several months. It seems odd that one can purchase a perfectly good 13" television for under $..., but I couldn't find a decent 9" unit for under $.... At our home we have made a family habit of watching Wheel and Jeopardy every evening during dinner. Our old 5" black and white was dying and I wanted another set that would squeeze in to our small dining room.I had been frustrated at the local retailers who only seemed to offer an RCA TV that I had misgivings about. I also didn't feel like spending big dollars for a TV that gets 5 hours of use per week. I had seen the Phillips 9" TV at the local Best Buy, but the only unit they had left was an open box unit that was missing it's power cord and was priced at $.... I took a chance on ordering a reconditioned unit thorough Amazon. I figured if it didn't work out, I could always return it. When it arrived, it looked new. There were no physical flaws. Setup took less than ten minutes. The picture tube is nice and bright, with excellent resolution. The only drawback with the set is that the it's signal sensitivity is only fair. If you are connecting to cable or an outdoor antenna this will present no problem to you. My home has aluminum siding, making indoor reception a little challenging. I found that the included monopole antenna was adequate but not as good as I would have liked. I am a TV broadcast engineer by profession, so I tend to be a little more critical than most. In any case, I was able to improve reception dramatically by substituting a pair of rabbit ear antennas (you know , the old type with two rods that stick up) that I had lying around. You can buy a cheap pair of rabbit ears at any Radio Shack. Now I get very good reception and an excellent picture. Even my cynical 16 year old son was impressed. With shipping, the whole TV cost around $.... I think this an excellent value.

Does what a TV should do, has a good picture and good sound also. Only thing it is a little wide from front to back. But form side to side it is a nice shape and size.

A great little TV,

No problem with audible "humming" with this TV. It has a brilliant, sharp picture and the sound is fine for a small TV.The FM tuner is not the best and the stations are chosen by running the on screen frequency numbers with the up & down arrow keys. Turning the TV helps the FM signal but the bracket won't allow for 180 degree rotation so you may miss the strongest signal. The TV remembers your pre-programmed TV stations so if you use it from one location to another in your home or use it in your RV you won't lose your programming every time you disconnect the AC power. Philips has become our first choice in TV's, we have a couple other larger sets. This is a terrific little TV, I don't think you will be disappointed.

An Adequate to Mediocre Kitchen TV Fairly Priced,
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips Magnavox PR0930X 9" TV (Electronics)
I bought a refurbished unit, but it looked new to me. Five minutes after hooking up to the cable, we had an extremely bright, sharp picture -- so bright and sharp that it almost hurt the eyes. It has a control to automatically search for all the tunable (cable) channels. Forty-five minutes later, while I was making supper, there was a small explosive sound and the picture was all fuzzy and washed out.I was hopping mad and ready to send it back, but I let it run all night to see what would happen. It looked the same the next morning, so I used the controls to dial a perfectly adequate picture. I think what happened was that it was factory-set for an extremely high color temperature, say 9000°+, but the tube couldn't hold that. BTW it has a normal range of picture tuning controls that you access through the remote. Also, I don't like the high-color temperature setting so many TVs come with now -- nor do I like the excessive red bias that many models have as their default color. Now it looks like a fairly normal picture -- not nearly as bright and sharp as it was initially, but perfectly adequate for a kitchen TV. It's been used every day for the past five weeks and it's OK -- not great, but not bad -- a perfectly average, or maybe even mediocre but functional, screen. Its not as sharp as the 14 year old GE five inch set it replaces (small text is extremely fuzzy), but the color fidelity and contrast are better. The sound is average too -- monophonic coming out of the right side of the set. The FM radio works just fine but it's a nuisance to dial stations if you like to hop around. The frequency of the station to which you are listening is shown on the screen constantly, but it hops up and down every few seconds or so to avoid burning the screen -- I don't know if that's necessary nowadays, and its slightly annoying to look at -- but why would anyone stare at an otherwise blank screen? The [$$$] I paid for the set is just about right -- it's that kind of set, not great, not bad. I'm thinking about getting another one. Dictated using Dragon NaturallySpeaking

Philips 9" TV,
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips Magnavox PR0930X 9" TV (Electronics)
Ecellent reception, sharp picture, fits where larger sets won't. Appreciably better sound and video than the cheaper sets I looked at. Not quite up there with the Sony 9"in terms of absolute color saturation but contrast, detail, sensitivity appear just as good, and it's ... cheaper.Would be better if they provided a tilt/swivel base instead of the overhead mount intended for mounting by hanging it from a kitchen cabinet. Cute but that's not the way most of us go. Dusty
