There are three problems with this trimmer. One is the stubble comb. It does not fully cover the blades, therefore the unit must be held at a PERFECT angle for you to evenly cut your beard. Hold it too high, and the blade is directly against your skin. This makes trimming take FOREVER compared to the Remington MB series, which has a guard covering the whole blade, so you can just quickly drag it across your beard in the morning. The second problem is that there is no indication of when the unit is done charging. Third is the price, it's just too expensive for such a limited-use trimmer.

Electric shavers and trimmers have come a long way over the years, and even though they will not be completely replacing razor blades and trimming scissors any time soon, they have now reached a point where they have become more than acceptable alternatives. Philips Norelco stubble trimmer Pro is an excellent choice when it comes to stubble trimmers. Below are some of my impressions thus far.

*** Trimming ***

If you get a device that does one thing and one thing only you'd expect it to deliver on that account. And indeed, the Norelco stubble trimmer does a great job of trimming the stubble. Its blades are fairly sharp, and the trimmer's guard will allow you to adjust the length of cutting from 0.5 mm to 10.0 mm. Unfortunately, just like all other trimmers out there, it doesn't go all the way to 0.0 mm setting, so you'll need to use a shaver for the finishing touches. Nonetheless, the stubble trimming gives a smooth, even look. The trimmer has a very nice edge that is ideal for precision trimming.

*** Charging/Battery ***

My trimmer came already pre-charged, so I was able to use it straight out of box. The blade speed didn't seem to be all that fast though, which I attributed to the low charge. However, even after having it charged the speed remained pretty much the same, so I guess that is just the speed at which this trimmer operates. The speed did not have any influence on the quality of trimming. Furthermore, the charging of the trimmer did not take too long - according to the package it can be fully charged in less than an hour, although since I never had it get completely discharged I never needed that much time. Single charge can last for a while, up to few weeks with typical use.... The trimmer can be used while it is being charged, so if you primarily plan on using it in your own bathroom losing charge should never be an issue.

*** Cleaning ***

One of the most annoying things with electric shavers or trimmers has always been the need to painstakingly take the moving parts apart in order to get all the debris out. There are some very advanced models on the market that will clean themselves, but they require special base stations and cleaning liquids that add a lot of cost over time. Furthermore, many trimmers require occasional lubrication with proprietary oil-based lubricants, which needless to say adds a great deal of hassle to the whole cleaning process. The Norelco trimmer doesn't require any of those complicated procedures. It can be washed with water and additionally cleaned with the included brushes. It is probably the shaver/trimmer that is easiest to maintain of all the products that I have come across.

*** Build ***

This trimmer comes across as very solid. It feels really good in hand, and one gets sense that it is also very durable. However, I'll have to use it for a while before I can make the final assessment on this aspect of the trimmer. The trimmer is nicely designed and its ergonomic shape sits well in your hand. It is fairly heavy, much more so than I expected. This gives it a nice sense of control while trimming.

*** Price ***

The trimmer seems more expensive than most electric shavers/trimmers that you can find these days. However, it is a very solid product that does what it is designed to do extremely well. If having neatly groomed stubble is one of your priorities, then this trimmer is definitely worth the price.

One thing that I wish was included in the package is a traveling/storage case, or at least a cover for the blade.

*** Conclusion ***

If you are looking for a trimmer that will give you a consistently even and well-groomed stubble, be easy to use and maintain, then Philips Norelco stubble trimmer is an ideal option. Read more ›

When I first received this trimmer, it seemed ok, albeit unremarkable product. The operation was reasonably quiet. The battery is permanently sealed and not replaceable. For it's selling price, one would expect it to have a lithium battery, which was not the case. After about 2 months of use, the clip attaching the blade to the trimmer's body broke off - rendering the product useless!!! On top of that, the manufacturer (Philips Norelco) refused to honor the promised rebate offer.
Definitely not a good experience.

Update: A few months after the rebate processor received my resubmission along with a complaint, they agreed to honor the rebate. Guess it's worth revising the rating up to 2 stars.

This is the worst beard/stubble trimmer i've ever owned. It grabs at your skin, grates, scratches and gives a completely uneven trim unless you hold it at a very PRECISE angle. Wish I could return it.

I bought this shaver to keep a 5 oclock shadow look going all day. I previously had a cheap $15 norelco and was looking for a better one that would cut closer. This shaver has a quality feel. Its got a rubber backing and fits well in your hand. But after that the rest of the shaver is sub-par. The battery charing is a pain as it doesn't tell you when it is fully charged or how much for a charge is even left. It is washable which seams like a great option but once you wet the head area it will continue to leak out the bottom where the charger plug connects. Water dripping out of the spot where you are suppose to connect electricity seems like a really poor design. The actual shaving quality is the biggest negative. I used it with out any guard and it was no where near a stubble look. It looked like had not shaved in 2 days not 8 hours....

Overall I would not recommend anyone with a thicker beard you this because it doesn't come close to keeping a 5 o'clock shadow, its closer to how i look 36 hours after I shave. I would have been better of sticking with the 15 dollar one from target, that one even comes with a stand.

It's with not a little disappointment that I have to lambaste this mediocre trimming tool given my glowing reviews of Philips' QT4070 beard trimmer in an earlier time. This trimmer is cumbersome, the blades don't trim evenly (necessitating a veritable acrobatics about the face, usually resulting in uneven length and repeated, tedious strokes), and a beard longer than a week will prove a challenge even to an inveterate groomer. Basically, this product is inferior to Philips' other trimmers currently on the market (the 4050/4070 lines) or Remington's Smart Touch trimmer, recently released. Avoid this product and let it die a speedy death from lack of sales.

So i was looking for a trimmer to replace my remington microsceen shaver because i really only use the trimmer on the shaver versus the actual shaver portion. the remingtons have the best trimmers that pop up with the press of a button but the problem is i find that these shavers tend to break after 1-2 years of use although i think they work great. i was hoping this trimmer would replace my remington and last longer. Bottom line this shaver cannot trim anywhere near as close as the trimmer on the remingtons and definitely not gonna do it for me. Just for reference the look i go for is probably best termed "scruff" rather than stubble i guess. i didnt know what .5mm's would be in the real world but its not very short. perhaps i was expecting to close a trim outta this thing but imo it should trim closer as you can always increase the guard size.
