Review of Norelco 8151XL

Before I bought this shaver, I read all 131 reviews of the 8140XL(a very similar model) on amazon, and was concerned, since many reviews were from previous norelco owners, who beleived that the newer norelco was of much cheaper quality than previous ones. I'm writing this

long review mainly to address worries that I had, which will hopefully help others in making their decision.

My last shaver, a Norelco 5811XL(Quadra line), I had for over 6 years, and the shaver and battery still work fine, but the trimmer broke a few months ago, so I've been planning to buy a new one for a while. I was never thrilled about the ease of shaving, I always had to make many

passes, and if the hair was too long, I either had to trim my face first or endure some pulling. A bit of a PITA, but I still found it much easier and more convenient than a blade. So I don't expect amazing results from this shaver, but I expect it to work at least as well as my previous model.

The main things that drew me to this particulat model is the ability to rinse it under water, the larger surface area of the blades and their potential for a quicker or better shave, and the lithium battery.

Here are a few downsides to the shaver:

- The travel pouch cannot hold the power cord, just the shaver(with or without the cap, contrary to one review), and the brush if you want.

- The protective cap does not fully enclose the heads, so it doesn't prevent hair from falling out of the heads like previous caps did. This was possibly done to aid in drying

- The power cord is not coiled, and has a transformer on one end, making it bulkier than with previous shavers, which had the transformer built in.

I have this razor and I love it. I've used the Coolskin razor from Norelco for many years and when it finally failed I purchased this model. It shaves much closer and quicker. Also, it is super quiet and light. Don't be fooled by the cheapness feel of the product. Yes, it is mostly plastic but it does a great job.

Note: Norelco's model 8140XL is about $25 cheaper and is practically the same product. The only differences I know of is the 8151XL includes a car charger (I never shave in the car) and also has an extra light on it to tell you when the battery needs charging (a nice feature but not worth the extra money imho).

Before this shaver, I had a Remington trifoil, and I have to admit that this shaver is way better. It was cheaper, and it's performance is much better. This shaver is very quiet, gives a great close shave, and holds it's charge well. I also love that you can just rinse it out to clean it. No, fancy liquids or cleaning devices are needed.

Just got this shaver for Christmas last month after having a Norelo shaver for the last four years.

- much lighter weight does make it "feel" cheap if you aren't used to it.
- small carrying case only has room for the shaver and the brush (with no special compartment for the brush...easily lost if you don't open it slowly)
- plastic cover doesn't cover the entire head.

- Actually cuts closer than my old Norelco. I don't have to press it into my skin in order to get a close cut. No neck bumps either!
- Pop-open lid is much easier to clean in a sink. Parts under blades don't snag on cloth when trying to clean out excess/stuck on hair shavings.
- Battery life is longer than older models.
- Much Quieter.
- Triple blades give me a closer shave without pressing into my skin and much quicker.
- Car power cord is a big plus for me as I shave on the way to work.
- Indoor recharging stand is more bulky than plugging the cord straight into the bottom of the razor, but its not too big and the transformer on the cord have a lot to do with the faster recharge time.

Excellent razor so far. Lightweight and quiet. Close shave and long battery life. The only thing you may need is an additional pouch for the recharging stand, its cord and the car recharger if you take it on trips.

I've owned a 8140Xl for a little over a year. I've just ordered new blades from Amazon. I'm not happy about a shaver that requires replacement parts that soon. From the beginning the quality/closeness of the shave was inadequate. I'm considering going back to a blade.

On the plus side, the unit holds a charge well. I'd estimate a clean shaven man could go, at least, a week between charges. The unit charges fully in just a few hours, too.

I don't like the shape, either. I've never dropped it but it feels awkward.

I've tried many different electric razors, but seem to keep coming back to the Norelcos. I had a couple of Braun foil razors which I feel gave me a slightly better (closer) shave, but they did not catch the clippings leaving a terrible mess after each shave, and the battery life (between charges) and longevity (life a razor) was poor. And the Brauns were more expensive.

I was fairly happy with my previous Norelco, a 7845XL, but after 6 years the battery was only good for one or maybe two shaves, so it was time for a new one. The 8151XL seemed like a comparable unit. I also like the car charger, which is handy when on the go or if you are traveling by car and have forgotten the wall charger.

I replaced the heads in my old shaver annually, and they were due again, but I think the 8151XL gives a slightly closer shave. It does take several passes in different directions to get a close shave all over, but having been an electric user for years I'm accustomed to this. I did not notice much irritation with the new razor, in fact I'm sure I had more with the 7845XL, but that might have been because the heads were toast.

The rinseable shaving heads and whisker-catcher area is a nice feature which I like very much. It will be interesting to see if this improves head life. The low battery light seems silly to mention as a feature, but I will admit I was alarmed that slightly less expensive models didn't have it - it's like seat belts, it should be standard equipment on all models. The trimmer works great, as with previous models.

Overall, this shaver did not [...] away. But as far as electric razors go, this one is pretty good and I'm quite happy with it.
