Great starter Cam!! Works with XP!!,
By
This review is from: Philips PCVC720K/40 ToUcam XS Internet WebCam (Personal Computers)
I searched for a few days on the internet and in the stores. I had no idea about Web Cams, so I did not want to spend alot of money, but still wanted to get a good camera. My intention is to send one to my father and one to my sister which live in different states. I installed it last night on Windows XP. It would not work until I went to the Phillips web site and downloaded the XP drivers(very simple to do). After I did that, it worked great. I am still trying to find a good site which I can meet people which have Cams too. Overall I am pleased....go ahead...get it! I bought 3!

At (this price), I didn't expect much. I was right. I had lost the original installation CD when I got this, but downloading drivers and installing them under Windows 2000 was a cinch. The quality of the pictures taken aren't the best, but what more can you expect for so little the cost?

No! Don't!,

This cam only works in extremely bright light and does not focus well. I have experience setting up many types of cams and this one has been the worst. It is difficult to focus and the software is over simplistic and ineffective. I had 3-75 watt lights on in the room and the picture was still darm, grainy and out of focus. I cannot recommend this cam. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra 20 bucks and get a Logitec or Kodak. You will be much happier.

Phillips PC Video Cam a real hit with the family!,

Well, I didn't realize 'till I had this camera a month that they had sub'd the $38 camera I ordered with the PCVC690, which costs almost three times as much. But I gotta say this camera was easy as pie to hook up to my COMPAQ running W98 and in about 3 minutes I was sending video emails to the kids. Good quality pictures without much light. The voice isn't always in sync with your lips but mostly it works OK. Great camera!

Sure, when you only pay (price) for a camera, you shouldn't expect great image quality. So I'm not gonna knock the quality, and it really isn't as bad as most people make it out to be. I run Windows XP and I just plugged this in and Windows did the rest. If you are running an earlier version the drivers will have to be loaded off the CD, but this is just a matter of putting the CD ini the drive and letting your computer do the work. It's incredibly easy to set up, and a great value for the (price).

Good cam, terrible support,

I've had my webcam for about 6 months now and it's been great. The problem is not with the camera, but with the terrible support on the Philips website. Just try to find a driver for this camera....or for that matter any of their cdrw drives. I also have one of them from Philips, again a good drive, but a disk wasn't supplied in the box so I went looking for drivers on their website found nothing. In the end I contacted customer support who said that the windows drivers should be fine and the disk basically wasn't needed anyway!

Get a logitech.,

The picture is poor, the base is unstable, the adjustments are unreliable. It gets one star for having a built in mic, but I've never tried to use it, so I have no idea if that actually works. My advice is, if you're looking for a cheap webcam but still want some quality--go for the logitech quickcam. It's like [a little] more, and the picture is actually decent. Plus, it's easy to set up and doesn't fill your computer with a bunch of lame useless software and games.
