4.0 out of 5 stars Good Portable Option
I went and purchased this on a whim after my 10.2 inch DVD died after 2 months. 1.0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE! DO NOT BUY!!!
My wife and I bought this from Target in anticipation of a long road trip with the kids. Having read horror stories about portable DVD players, I took it out of the box right away and tested it. Everything ran fine. Right as we were leaving, I installed the player in the car and it instantly would find any disc I would insert. We delayed our trip departure for 45 minutes...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Portable Option, June 25, 2007
This review is from: Philips PET708/37 Portable DVD Player with Dual LCD Display Screens and Car Mount Kit (Electronics)
I went and purchased this on a whim after my 10.2 inch DVD died after 2 months. This has two screens that mount to the headrest in a very secure manner, which eliminates the 'swing' problem of the one DVD screen strapped between the seats. The mount is very secure and is at a good height for my children to view it in the backseat of our minivan. I like the controls and the ease of use. The picture is excellent quality.

The con is that the battery cannot be used when the player is mounted on the headrest because it covers the connections, so it must be plugged into the cigarette lighter for car viewing. Not a big deal for us, but something to keep in mind.

This player seems better quality than my previous player. I would recommend the extended warranties for these - they get banged around a lot and are fragile.

1.0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE! DO NOT BUY!!!, February 3, 2008
This review is from: Philips PET708/37 Portable DVD Player with Dual LCD Display Screens and Car Mount Kit (Electronics)
My wife and I bought this from Target in anticipation of a long road trip with the kids. Having read horror stories about portable DVD players, I took it out of the box right away and tested it. Everything ran fine. Right as we were leaving, I installed the player in the car and it instantly would find any disc I would insert. We delayed our trip departure for 45 minutes to exchange it at Target for a working unit, which ran fine the entire 4 hours of the trip. Then, two days later, it froze in the middle of a DVD. Upon restart, every DVD gave the same "No Disc" error after spinning for about 3 minutes. The Philips support site seems to recognize that there is an issue, but then insults you by suggesting that everything has to do with the laser lens not being clean. I am returning it to Target again today and will not be re-purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Took a beating, July 8, 2009

This review is from: Philips PET708/37 Portable DVD Player with Dual LCD Display Screens and Car Mount Kit (Electronics)
We bought this system for our daughters over two years ago, and it only just failed after receiving a ninja kick from my 2 1/2 year-old. Is it as good as a built in system? Probably not. But it wasn't my daughter's first kick that knocked out the system, it was her hundredth, so we'll be replacing it with another Philips player set. Only complaint, which was stated in other reviews is that the battery covers the car mount point on the back of the player, so you can't charge the battery while it's being watched while mounted in the car. Despite the product advise of "please remove player and mount when not in use", it spent 90% of it's life hooked up in the car, so the battery issue wasn't a frequent problem, but it was an inconvenient one, since it was usually so long between times where I dismounted it, the battery was usually dead anyway. Only other feature I'd love to see is just the seemingly simple ability to hook up an ipod video cable to this system. It would be reeeeeaaaaallly nice to be able to keep the iPod up front, where I can control it, while having its video displayed in back for the kids. DVDs are slowly going the way of the dodo bird, so forward compatibility would be nice. Although, given my daughter's penchant for punishing the poor thing, it probably wouldn't outlive the DVD obsolescence anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Player, May 21, 2007
This review is from: Philips PET708/37 Portable DVD Player with Dual LCD Display Screens and Car Mount Kit (Electronics)
A little hesistant to buy since target doesn't have a samply one hooked up to see quality. Bought one and charged it and it didn't read any new DVDs. Well, took it back thinking would get a different brand. But none of the other players, for the price, seem to match up. Its nice that the dvd player has a battery pack so we could take it on the plane. But also since it comes with the extra screen my daughter gets her own to watch as well. Plus I like the brackets to attach to my headrest easy and sturdy so far. Only drawback so far is you cant charge the battery if you have the monitor attached to the headrest. The removeable battery covers the mount hookup.

1.0 out of 5 stars NO DISC Error, January 17, 2009
This review is from: Philips PET708/37 Portable DVD Player with Dual LCD Display Screens and Car Mount Kit (Electronics)
We bought at target. We used for about 3 months then we start receiving the NO DISC error message I tried cleaning the lens as Philips suggested but NO luck. The support also broke very easily, it's not kid's resistent.

Terrible choice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worked only Once, November 6, 2008
This review is from: Philips PET708/37 Portable DVD Player with Dual LCD Display Screens and Car Mount Kit (Electronics)
We bought this DVD player for a car trip, and it worked great the first trip back in March. We've always been very careful with it, and have kept it in a very nice case. When we got it out to take on the 2nd trip, I didn't even try it, but once we got going, it didn't work. The disc won't spin at all. I was on hold with customer support for 45 minutes, but they are finally sending out a new comparable replacement model. Hopefully that one will work at least one more time than this one did.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very unhappy with this DVD player, March 10, 2008
This review is from: Philips PET708/37 Portable DVD Player with Dual LCD Display Screens and Car Mount Kit (Electronics)
This is the 4th portable DVD player we have owned and by far the worst! We previously had another Philips single DVD player that was great, but it was stolen so we got this one instead. SAVE YOUR $$$. Half the time it doesn't play the DVD at all.

We used the first one for 2.5 years until my daughter broke it. It got beat left and right. We used in Jamica, and Europe and across USA. Overall a great product thats why we bought the second one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Worked for 6 months then it stopped working, August 11, 2008
This review is from: Philips PET708/37 Portable DVD Player with Dual LCD Display Screens and Car Mount Kit (Electronics)
We purchased this product at Target receiving good reviews from their website. It worked well for 5 1/2 months but recently we were receiving NO disc error's we cleaned the eye with electronic cleaner per Phillips website but still will not work. When putting the DVD in it reads no disc and sounds like it will play the dvd but then stops with error message. Do not make the same mistake we did by purchasing this player.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not fit our car's head restraints, July 11, 2007
This review is from: Philips PET708/37 Portable DVD Player with Dual LCD Display Screens and Car Mount Kit (Electronics)
We purchased this at Target prior to reading any reviews. To our dismay, the head restraint mounts are more suited for a 1978 Nova (no offense to Nova owners :)). We considered using Velcro straps or longer screws to mount the unit in our Volvo, but decided it wasn't worth the risk of it flopping around.

We called Phillips customer support, and they were no help. They acted like we were the first people to call and inquire if they had a different mounting system.

I'm sure it's a nice dvd player, but we just can't get past the fact that we can't use it in our car as advertised or as we intended. We're going to return the unit. Unless your head restraints are adjustable with posts between the seatback and the top portion, keep shopping.
