This review is from: 4-PORT USB 2.0 Hub (Personal Computers)
... see my full review on [...] ....
As we all know, it is amazing how many USB plugs you use on your computer. Mind you I may have more than others, but HUBS become an important item in order to have an easier access. This is the reason why I tried the Philips PH1620 4-Port USB Hub (also referred to as Model PHL1620 on the [...] web site) THE UNIT The HUB is a small rectangular transparent clamshell unit with 4 connectors on one side and the Power plug and the main USB connector on the other. It is a nice looking which you would think it would look cheap because it's in this transparent shell, but in actually it looks pretty nice on a desk. However, there are two things that surprised me 1- one being the weight of the HUB which is quite heavy and the second is the size of the Power Supply which is one of the largest I've seen for a 4-prt USB hub ... it is roughly 3"x2"x2" ... mind you, it should not really be an issue but just thought I would mention it because, as you know, it will take two spaces on a regular power bar. PROS: - COMPATIBILITY: I've used this HUB with SUSE Linux, WINS XP, WINS VISTA and no issues at all. Should there be ? no, you are right, but in the world of computers you sometime see very strange things. - TRUE USB 2.0 480 Mbps: The HUB does perform at the speed advertised and is fully 2.0 compliant. I've tested it's compatibility and found that the speed and versioning are accurate. I am mentioning this because, and you will see this is my other reviews, I've also tested the Philips USB 2.0 Hub SDH1615 and the Philips 4USB 3FW CMBO 2. W/P FLAT US2-PH1606, which are BOTH referred to as being 2.0 compliant but in reality they are not. So the PH1620 does work at specs. - LIFETIME WARRANTY: This unit has a Lifetime Limited Warranty which I think is worth mentioning. CONS: - TIGHT CONNECTORS: I know I am not the only one mentioning it but the connectors are VERY tight. Mind you it could be a good thing because once it's plugged it, it will never, ever unplug by itself ... but nevertheless, they are a drag to pull and plug it, especially when you are having technical issues with your devices. BOTTOM LINE: The Philips PH1620 is an inexpensive HUB that works as advertised offering full compatibility with today's USB standard and OS.
