5.0 out of 5 stars The best of four non-powered speakers I tried.
Out of curiosity, I bought four sets of "passive" (non-powered) speakers:

(1) these Philips
(2) the Coby CS-P14 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009W5QS)
(3) the Coby CS-MP16 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P1VR42)
(4) the Sony SRS-P11Q...

1.0 out of 5 stars Am I missing something
These are horrible. I mean bad. I tried them with everything...mp3 player, computer, headphone output on home theater...the sound is so low its a joke. I wonder if these were defective. I can't imagine giving them a star..but in this case its the lowest rating possible. They actually sound better in their new home..the trash.

Out of curiosity, I bought four sets of "passive" (non-powered) speakers:

(1) these Philips
(2) the Coby CS-P14 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009W5QS)
(3) the Coby CS-MP16 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P1VR42)
(4) the Sony SRS-P11Q (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SRS-P11Q-Passive-Speaker-System/dp/B00068E570/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1249963386&sr=8-2).

Of these four, these Philips had BY FAR the best sound. They alone sounded as if they had any bass at all, and were relatively balanced across the board, crisp compared to the others, without the excessive mid-range that characterizes the other three. They are also the most aesthetically pleasing of the four, I think. Take it from someone who has tried all four side-by-side: there is simply no contest.

For $9.99, these speakers sound pretty good. They're light, and do not use batteries. Since they're not powered, they're only as loud as the max volume on your audio device. They don't have much bass, but sound pretty clear overall. If you want something portable and much better sounding, but won't break the bank, grab the Virgin Boomtube speakers. They can be found as low as $29.95, but normally run about $49.95.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Deal, September 1, 2007

Not worth the money. They are alot bigger than I had expected, and the sound quality was not very good. No power drastically affected its ability to play loudly. I bought a set a coby speakers for 5 bucks, that get the jod done better than these. The size graetly affects the portablity of this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very efficient speakers, October 7, 2008

I bought these for my laptop, Motorola W490 phone (has a media player in it), SanDisk mini mp3/wma player (runs on a single AAA battery for 7 hours), & my solar powered Kato solar powered pocket radio. In all the above apps, the speakers sounded surprisingly good for such small (un-powered) speakers, at such a low price.

My laptop speakers are only 1/4"x 1 1/2" each. The other units don't have speakers... headphones only.

These speakers are very efficient considering most earphone jacks only put out around 10-50 milliwatts (.01-.05 watts)of sound power. You won't rattle the windows with these, but they do deliver more quality sound per milliwatt than anything else I've found yet... exactly what I was looking for.

These are not "amplified" speakers & are not powered by batteries or an AC adapter. They are powered by the audio power coming directly from your earphone jack on your player, laptop, PC, or radio.

Earbuds inside your ear do not require as much power to sound loud, as speakers will to fill a whole room. The volume & sound quality of the speakers will depend on the quality & power coming out of your earphone jack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Products under this price, April 14, 2008
This review is from: Philips SBP1100/37 portable speaker system (Electronics)
I owed a lot of pc speakers before. The quality of this product is very good under this price range. It is simple to use and weight is light which can carry everywhere. It doesn't need any battery to operate which I don't need to worry about running out the battery. Even it can't adjust the volume through the speaker, I tried to use my notebook to raise the volume up to the highest, the sound of the speakers were still very clear. This is very amazing. I will recommend this product to my friends who have limited budget and/or always need to travel.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shhhh... They're quiet, September 4, 2010
This review is from: Philips SBP1100/37 portable speaker system (Electronics)
I thought speakers were supposed to make things louder. Silly me. The actual sound quality is good when you can hear it. I wanted a small set of speakers to play music outside on my deck. I could not hear what was going on in the privacy of my own house.

Terrible speakers for laptop connections, actually DIMINISHES the sound output, if you can believe that. Very frustrating to have to get rid of them....
I guess if you wanted to transfer sound directly from your ipod it does the bare minimum but the term "speakers" is generous. Waste of money on my part!

1.0 out of 5 stars Pieces of crap that are worse than headphones!, August 25, 2010

It would be better to turn headphones sideways and turn them all the way up than to try and use these.
