High-Definition Drivers for Full-Range Sound

The Downtown headset provides a balanced sound experience. Powerful 40-millimeter drivers produce crystal-clear highs and mids and deep, rich bass without distortion. A closed-back design ensures good bass response and keeps you absorbed in the music.

MusicSeal Technology to Provide Complete Music Privacy

Whether you're listening to the guitar riffs of a funk metal band or the lifting soprano of an opera singer, Philips' MusicSeal technology allows you to keep your favorite music all to yourself. This design includes double-layer walls inside the ear shells and a firm seal between the edge of the ear cushion and ear cup housing to seal in beats and prevent ambient noise from disrupting your sound.

Comfortable Foam Ear Cushions Isolate Sound

The Downtown's deluxe, noise-isolating ear cushions are made of memory foam, which molds itself to the shape of your ear for hours of comfort. The foam also forms a seal that preserves bass response while blocking out external noise so you can focus on the music.

Comfortable Headband and Durable Metal Construction

The Downtown features lightweight spring-steel construction in the ear shell frame and headband, which is covered with cushy, heat-sealed fabric to make it even more comfortable. The headphones' flat, anti-tangle cable won't knot up, improving both your listening experience and their durability.

Convenient In-Line Mic for Phone Calls

For easy operation, the Downtown includes a sleek, in-line mic for use with your mobile phone so you can switch seamlessly from listening to chatting.

The in-line mic is compatible with iPhone, BlackBerry, HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson mobile phones.

Product and Warranty Information

The Downtown headphones have a 1.2-meter (3.93-foot) cable. They carry a one-year limited warranty.

Bought these for my 15 y.o. son. He loves them. I "broke them in" before giving to him, so I had a chance to listen as well.

Pros:

Comfort is a big one here. The padding is very soft but seems as if it will hold up well. My son isn't easy on his headphones and no problems in the last two months. They are light in weight. The clamping is appropriate. While they aren't good for strenuous activities, for walking around, etc. they work great.

Isolation is very good (for better or worse, depending on they environment you wear them). Sound leakage is minimal.

Cord is flat and doesn't get tangled easily. It is definitely stronger than most headphone/earbud cords at this or higher prices. The attachment to the ear cup has an OK strain relief. There's only one cord so that's less of a chance of entanglement.

The headband is metal! Not plastic. You would have a hard time breaking these. The headband padding is removable (and presumably, replaceable). Not much padding but enough, given the light weight.

Cons (sorta):

Color choices are horrible. Brown, purple and this nowhere color (taupe?). Why not just black?

Sound is OK. I come from higher end headphones, so I'm a bit jaded. That being said, the sound is good for general purposes. It doesn't excel in any particular area, but then it doesn't let you down either. It is not bass oriented, as I hear some celebrity headphones are slanted.

Overall, these are an interesting combination: You have very soft and comfortable ear pads combined with an industrial strength build. I'd recommend these to users who want to step up from an earbud to a better sound and fit.

Bought these for my son--as he needed a good set of phones for computer, phone, and his audio player.
I was looking for something without a lot of sound leakage--even though he's not apt to listen to music at my levels, it has been audible when he used my high-end Sennheiser HD XXX units and my mid-end Audio Technica open units.
More, since he was used to the Flat and Clean sound of those--I wanted good bang for the buck.

These have more than suited.

I'm actually intending a second set due to the microphone for my own listening on phone and tablet.

They are well built. They are comfortable to the ear and the noggin after hours of use--and didn't seem to favor one type of sound over another. They are pretty amazing for the price and the target audience.

I'm overly discerning with headphone amps, DACs, game audio, SACD's et al--and was very pleased with the natural feel of the sound in all cases. I certainly heard a bit of mid-range color that wasn't present on my other cans--and they didn't have the breadth of soundstage--but again, we're talking One Benjamin or less on these. You could take them with you and worry less about their damage or disappearance.

Buy a pair. I couldn't get them on Amazon (and normally would--but they were out) and plan another set soon.

Black--by the way is a bit of a misnomer--but the headphones are a homer.

Ask anyone, and they'll tell you about the earphones they love and why, but when you go out and buy them, they just don't live up to your expectations. For me, they are like finding that perfect pair of shoes or jeans and it's hit or miss. Read the descriptions, and they all say they are comfortable and sound the best (giving their impressive sound range), but it seems few live up to their claims.

I require a pair of headphones that is comfortable, fits around the ear nicely, padded well so there's no discomfort when wearing for periods of time, doesn't fit too tightly to create pain or headache, and they don't get caught in my long hair. For my eclectic music tastes, they have to sound good over a wide range of genre. They also have to block out noise and keep what I'm listening to for my ears only. They need to be durable, not have a hugely long cord and be able to sound good while using between different devices (PC, MP3 player, etc.)

The Philips CitiScape Downtown Headphones do everything that I require. They have great sound quality (mind you, I might be missing some ranges because of middle-aged hearing), they are comfortable and they have been used since May with no visible signs of wear. They are holding up beautifully! I love that I can wear them while family members watch TV and there is no disturbance to either of our listening pleasures - these are wonderful for private listening!

There are two things about the headphones I would change:
* There was no case for the headphones, so when not in use, they just sit out.
* The cord could be just a bit longer.

Overall, these are the best earphones I've ever used. They are perfect for me and what I use them for. I love the color, the fit, the size, and the durability, sound quality and listening privacy. To put it simply, I LOVE 'EM!

Philips CitiScape Downtown headphones sound good at a good price.

These are comfortable headphones. The head band is stainless steel, so it looks like it would last a lifetime. The fabric covering the head band is just about perfect for me - just the right amount of padding. The ear cups fit perfectly on my ears and there is just the right amount of pressure on my head - very comfortable with glasses. The cable transmits no sound into the headphones - I could move around easily with these headphones.

Sound is pretty darn nice. These aren't meant to be audiophile headphones, just good sounding at a reasonable price. They deliver in that category. There is some bass, but it is not overpowering. To some they might feel a little thin in the bass category (hip hop is not going to sound good on these cans - but you know Dr. Dre takes care of that world). Mids are surprisingly clean and sweet. Vocals are the strong suit with these headphones. The soundstage is fairly wide; there is some feeling of sound beyond my head. Imaging is good, somewhat soft. Instruments are nicely defined, but not so razor sharp that it is annoying. I could have liked a slight bit better imaging. My frame of reference is Bowers & Wilkins P5 and C5, V-Moda Crossfade LP and M-80, and Dr. Dre Tours (my list of in ear monitors is way too long to include). These are very close to the level of B&W accuracy; they are thinner sounding than the V-Modas.

These are the strangest headphones I have ever reviewed, the iDevice has one button and a microphone (I do not have an Android phone so can't comment on compatibility, the box does show Android). There is no volume control?! Seriously, no volume control seems like a huge oversight to me. The one button stops and plays music, answers and ends phone calls.
