The only drawback may be the length of the cable, depending on how and where you like to have your audio device (hip vs. waistband) and how you like the cable to hang. Easily solvable by getting an extension, but since I had destroyed so many Sony and Nike ear-buds/sport headphones, I had plenty of extensions lying around.
They sounds great too. My last pair of Nike Vapors sounded horrible, all treble. My Sony s would cut out on me all the time. This one gives me a nice full range of tones. I am definitely picking up a few more as gifts and for myself.
4/12/2011 Update: Have been using these now everyday for over six months now and they are still going strong. Never had any other pair that are used for running and the gym last this long.
3/16/2012 Update: Still using the same pair and they've kept going strong after nearly 1500 miles.
I read hundreds of reviews and have tried multiple pairs of headphones for the gym and many have come up short. Below are all of the criteria that cause people issues when it comes to finding ideal headphones for the gym. The Philips SHQ1000/28 In-Ear Headphones Tuned for Sports headphones are great in all of these areas:
Sound quality: Sound quality is very solid. I have Bose headphones ($100) for everyday use but didn't want to continue to use them in the gym as they are not sweat resistant and are expensive. The Philips headphones don't sound incredibly different, so that says a lot.
Bass: Pretty good level of bass.
Volume: I can keep my iPod at 50-75% volume in the gym and that is plenty on these headphones.
Cord length: Perfect for arm band (comes with a clip to hook it onto your shirt or armband which avoids having to wrap it around your armband and reduces tension on the connection) and certainly long enough to put your iPod in your pocket.
Sweat resistant: These are designed for the gym and for active use and are sweat resistant.
Durability: I can't speak to the durability as I just bought them recently, but for $15-20 bucks, I would be happy to buy 2+ pairs a year even if they give out after 6 months.
Comfort: The earbuds and the rubber covers are the same shape as the Bose headphones and will absolutely stay in your ear and never move or fall out regardless of the exercise (running, lifting weights, jumping rope, etc.). Very comfortable and come in 3 sizes so ear size is not a concern.
In summary, these are these ideal gym headphones, are cheap, and you will not notice them throughout a long workout except for the fact that they sound great.
In regards to the Philips SHQ1000/28 In-Ear Headphones, I have only used them once so far at the gym and they exceeded my expectations,by a mile, from reading those negative reviews. They cost me $20 + tax at Target and they work great.
The earbuds came with different sized covers that are made of silicone, but, the ones that were already fitted fit my ears fine.
As for sound quality, I'm really not certain what people expect for $20 - They sound good to me considering the environment (the gym). Unless you plan on listening to SACD 2-channel audio while working out, I'd say that these earbuds will sound good to most anybody. Sure, if you've been brainwashed into thinking that the lopsided bass approach that BOSE, JBL & so many others market as pure audio quality then you will be a bit disappointed. Seriously, you also have to take your PMP hardware & the audio source (Wav>Flac>Mp3) into consideration. Ultimately, using them to listen to Mp3s should give you a decent experience and this is coming from someone who uses them with a POS Colby Mp3 player (yea, i'm not going to bring an iPod to the gym).
Overall, I think the importance here is that, again, these earbuds cost $20 (+tax) and they do what Philips says they will do - which from my hands on experience with the product,so far, is that they are water resistant & won't crap out in 6 months. That's quite a compliment considering Philips isn't a brand that I would normally choose. Really, for 20 bucks you can't go wrong!Read more ›
