Good Fit and Fair Sound But Could Be Priced Lower (3.5 Stars),

As you know, I am a headphones freak. I try to buy a lot of headphones. The reason this is is because my headphones usually only last a couple of months. Yes, months. I rarely buy something more than $20 because I know they won't last forever. I recently bought an iPod and am happy with it but dislike the Apple earbuds. I tried a pair from Maxell but they were laughable. So, I went to Target and found these and a pair of clip earbuds also by Philips (which by the way are great). These...well, not so great. I thought since they were a bit more pricey I'd get some quality out of these headphones but it turns out that these don't have any better sound than headphones that are a few bucks cheaper. Don't get me wrong, these headphones are good but I thought with the heavier price tag I'd get something a bit better. They don't sound that bad, if they were half the price I wouldn't be complaining as much. But when reviewing a pair of headphones I have to keep in mind that value takes place here, and that other people might be looking at other models at similar pricings. I have to say I was slightly dissappointed by the sound of these. Again, the sound isn't that bad but at fifteen dollars I'd want more than "isn't that bad". They boast on the packaging about extra bass, that didn't seem true when I plugged these in. They lack that "punch" to it that other headphones have in this price range. It sounded more like a tap than a boom. Other than that, the mids sounded pretty good, and they do have a sharp, clear sound that at least make them sound average on most fuller genres like rock and pop. But still, I can't hide the fact that these don't have the sound I expect out of them when it came to bass quality. They do sound good, but don't have a good price to what you get ratio. Other than sound, they do feature a couple of good attributes. They are nice and comfortable to wear to me, and I have ears that are a bit on the large side so these would fit almost anyone else. Also, like most other Philips headphones, have a solid cord that could stand up to a lot of torture. The plug is in the "L" shape so the less chance there is of a plug failure. Also the cord design of these are great, the left clip-phone only falls to your neck so it won't hang if you want to take it off. Although these headphones are very comfortable and seem durable, I'm kinda on the fence of recommending them. They fit well, are durable, have a great design, and have an average to above average sound, and I'd definitely buy headphones from Philips again, but I'd thought I'd get a bit better bass or a volume control of some sort if I'm dishing out fifteen bucks. I'm not planning on returning them, but I'd probably only consider purchasing them again if they're on sale. They are designed well, but just don't have a good value. Recommend if on sale for under ten dollars. 3.5 stars.

Fantastic for sleeping!!,

I don't understand the other reviewers problems! I have recently purchased 5 different pairs of headphones trying to find ones that I can use during the night while I sleep. Other brands were uncomfortable, would fall off during the night, produced horrible sound quality, or would hurt my ears. I finally tried the Philips SHS4700/37 and have been sleeping like a baby. They are so comfortable I hardly feel them! I can even roll over in my sleep and they stay securely on. The sound quality is excellent, they even rival my bulky Sony headphones which cost me more than $100!! I would recommend these heaphones to anyone who has problems keeping their headphones on or have problems with earbuds due to ear sensitivity.

Great headphones for the price,

I have trouble wearing ear buds so am always looking for headphones that don't take a lot of room in my bag, are comfortable, and have fairly good sound. (I don't use headphones in situations where I need audiophile quality sound.) These headphones satisfy all those criteria. When you factor in the price, they are perfect for my needs. The first thing you need to know if you haven't tried these before is that the cords are not the same length. When I opened the package and saw the different lengths, I was certain I had a defective pair. When I wore them my usual way (with the cords coming down in front), they felt really odd. I took them back to the store and explained to the very young customer service staffer why I needed to return them. She showed me that the cords were supposed to go around the back of my neck and that's why one side is longer. Old dog, new tricks. The clips fit well on my (apparently normal-sized) ears. Often I leave them loose and if I do they fall off when I tip my head. If I push the headphone closer to my ear it clicks tighter to the ear clip and they stay on even if I tip my head to the side. They are comfortable. They aren't noise cancelling and don't have audiophile sound but for use at the gym, on the bus or at my desk, they are perfect. As another reviewer mentioned, the cords tend to get tangled more than other headphones (especially due to the uneven lengths) but if I wrap them around my music source, they are fine.

Ear buds give me dermatitis... bulky ear phones give me headaches... some ear clips hurt. These are excellent, comfortable, and with good sound. Thanks!

Flimsy Cable!,
By tco (Idaho) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Philips SHS4700/37 Earclip Headphone (Electronics)
I have purchased 2 pairs of the Philips SHS4700/37 Earclip Headphones in less than a year. The first one developed a short in the cable after a few months--only one ear would receive the sound. Then that ear totally cut out! But I like the clip-on style, so I bought a 2nd pair. Today, 2-3 months after purchasing the second set, a short in the cable near the plug-in is causing the sound in the right ear to go in and out. Think I'll try something else this time around!

I have headphones for hours and hours a day. Consequently, I'm pretty hard on headphones. I really like these. I think that the sound is good, but then I mostly listen to audiobooks and podcasts. For a music lover you may want something with a better quality sound. They fit great, but I think my ears are probaly on the smaller side. They are also great for sleeping especially if you sleep on your back. I love the cushion behind the ears it is very comfortable. Also, the cord is very soft and pliable. My only complaint is that I think they could be a little cheaper. All in all I'm happy with these headphones and I will probably repurchase when not if I break them!

Most comfortable portable headphones.,
This review is from: Philips SHS4700/37 Earclip Headphone (Electronics)
These are my favorite portable headphones: they are the most comfortable, they filter out most ambient noise, and they sound good enough for my primitive tastes.I own a lot of headsets for my iPod (I tend to keep them in various places: at work, in my daypack, in the car, ...), so I've tried a lot of different types. These are the only ones I can keep on my ears for hours at a time. They are one of only two pairs that deliver decent sound when I walk to work... especially when I cross a freeway overpass (they keep out the traffic noise for all but the heaviest trucks). On the downside: the cord wraps even worse than most headphones (because the cable length varies for the two speakers). One important trick: remember to "clip" tightly - I found it made all the difference in improving overall volume, bass & treble balance, and filtering out ambient noise. Well clipped, these are almost good enough for airplane use (although I tend to take a noise-canceling pair for long flights).

Wonderful but flimsy,

I love, love, love ear clips...but be careful with these. Wrap around headbands are heavy, hurt my neck, and mess with my hair. Earbuds are just painful. these ear clips are so comfortable and the sound quality is excllent, however, the cord is also extremely delicate. i have broken more then one pair within the first few weeks of purchasing them. There is another version in this same family; they are white and the cord is sturdier then the balck ones. the fabric on the ear clips of the white one isn't as soft, but they are just as nice as the black ones but without breaking as easily. seriously, they are really delicate so if you are prone to getting the cord caught on anything, dont get them - opt for the white!

This item is somewhat uncomfortable to wear. The clip part doesn't extend nearly far enough for it to sit comfortably around my ear.

Good earphones until you randomly lose sound in one ear,
By Candice W "Candice" (Pullman, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Philips SHS4700/37 Earclip Headphone (Electronics)
I like these earphones - the sound is good, the size isn't too large, and they are comfortable. I specifically buy non-earbud headphones as my ear canals are so small that earbuds will not stay put and so when I found these I thought they were great. However, within just a few months, the sound in the right ear went out. I thought at first it was me being too rough on them, but within a month (exactly a month!) of purchasing a second pair, the sound in the left ear has gone out. The cord must be too delicate, so if you are running with them, carry them around in a purse/gym bag, etc these headphones may not be your best choice. Onto the next set of clip-ons for me! Wish me luck.
