5.0 out of 5 stars Updated version of Philips HS820
These headphones appear to be a newer incarnation of the outstanding Philips HS820 phones (currently rated 4.5 stars in 71 Amazon reviews). Other than the color, I don't see any real difference between the two models (I do own both).

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Sound. Hurts.
I bought these headphones after having a great experience with Philips before, my other headphones lasted two years before my brother broke them. So, I researched and found these, which happened to be the successor to my broken headphones. Good price, free shipping, bought them. 5.0 out of 5 stars Updated version of Philips HS820, January 3, 2008

These headphones appear to be a newer incarnation of the outstanding Philips HS820 phones (currently rated 4.5 stars in 71 Amazon reviews). Other than the color, I don't see any real difference between the two models (I do own both).

As with the earlier version, sound is excellent. It reproduces lows, mids and highs quite faithfully without appreciable distortion IMO.

These are well built, and very light & comfortable. They fold almost perfectly flat, and fit easily in a shirt pocket.

If you're looking for inexpensive (but not cheaply made), well performing compact headphones, look no further. I can't imagine a better value in the $20 price range.

decided to give these a try after reading positive reviews on hs820, which i didn't buy because of the weird color, at least on the monitor ... also, owned few things from Philips in the past and love this brand.

these headphones fit ears perfectly and are failry tight. i'm not an audiophil so my expectations might be not as high but sound is crisp and clear, i'm sure average user will find the sound terrific. Bass is right, and higher frequencies sound clear. i've owned them for about 3 weeks now, mostly use them in the gym - no complaints. plastic looks and feels quite durable and long lasting; although before ordering i was a bit concerned about the fabric - but it seems pretty durable too. i would defenitely recommend these.

I bought these headphones after having a great experience with Philips before, my other headphones lasted two years before my brother broke them. So, I researched and found these, which happened to be the successor to my broken headphones. Good price, free shipping, bought them. Shipping was fine, I hate plastic packaging but that doesn't matter. Sound wise, I have no problems with this. The bass is amazingly fantastic. Amazing quality, my iPod was turned to the highest volume and little to no static. Another great feature is that it folds to make it super portable! Very convenient, fits easily into a pocket. The only problem I have with these headphones is they hurt my ears. After having these on for 30 minutes or so, my ears start to get sore. Most of the time I do not notice when listening to music, as I zone into the music. But when I take the headphones off, my ears hurt, making for an uncomfortable experience. In short:

Sound: 5/5
Durability: 5/5 (Feels sturdy. Dropped many times, not a scratch)
Style: 5/5 (Very nice, glossy look. Also, as mentioned, so conveniently portable!!)
Design: 2/5

Overall nice headphones, but uncomfortable.

4.0 out of 5 stars the successor to the 820, June 24, 2008
This review is from: Philips SHS8200/37 Compact Foldable Behind-The-Head Headphone (Electronics)
I have both, the old white 820 and the new 8200.....

differences:

old: more premium plastic better build quality
better for biking during sunny days (white reflects heat)

new: cheaper plastic
better, tighter fit
same great sound as the 820

the old white 820s headband was too large (i have a larger head), so
the fit wasn't tight and you lost some bass as a result. the new
black 8200 have tighter fit resulting in better sound.

I wish you could get this in black and white, since white is better
for being out in the sun for biking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, poor wiring, June 4, 2009

I have the old (gray) version of these which took a couple years to lose sound in the right ear. The current version was also cheap, I think $13 here on Amazon, and also fit comfortably with great sound and little sound bleed. Unfortunately the right ear lost contact after only two months. I feel disillusioned and am looking at other brands. Due to freakish ears, I can't wear earbuds and the Phillips was the perfect mix of sound, comfort, and non-lame design. I still give it four stars for those reasons. Just buy a couple pairs so you're not caught short.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for running, March 10, 2008

This review is from: Philips SHS8200/37 Compact Foldable Behind-The-Head Headphone (Electronics)
I bought this after getting tired of ear-phones popping out during my runs. I've used these earphones for about a month now for both longer and shorter runs and they work really well. Since they sit directly over the ear, I can hear better than with the traditional ipod ear-phones. They also sit very nicely so that jostling of any kind doesn't affect them. I've never had to re-position them during a run.

The only con is that the ear-phones seem to catch all the sweat as you work out, especially if you are on a treadmill where there is less breeze. I had a smaller problem with other ear-phone so I don't know that there is a solution.

Overall though, I'm happy I bought them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not so hot, August 20, 2009

I had an older model of Phillips behind-head-folding headphones before (the white ones), they were fantastic and lasted a number of years. Eventually the side which the chord does not come from stopped working. I bought this model because I loved the old ones so much, bu in 2 or less months, these ones had already done the same thing.

I've purchased other products (headphones) by Phillips and was always well pleased until I bought these. I don't know if I got a dud pair or if they are all like that.

While the sound is indeed good, I find them not comfortable at all.
The speakers are at an odd angle, there's no way to adjust anything, and I'm constantly getting the same pressure point and have to take them off.

I was a happy user for 5 months (headphones worked very well for extended walks/runs). Recently, however, I started getting sound dropouts in one ear and now only get sound in one ear. Very disappointing! Giving 2 stars instead of 1 since I got some use out of them, but still...

I'm not a huge fan of tiny ear buds, which always seem to hurt when you wear them for a while and, besides, never seem to fit in my ears all that well. On the other hand, I don't like to drag around a large set of "ear-muff" headphones, either. I needed something for my ultraportable Asus EEE PC that was neither bulky nor painful and annoying like ear-buds. These compact foldable headphones from Philips were exactly the right blend of comfort, great sound quality, and portability. They fold up to be very small, flat, and lightweight, but when I unfold them and plug them in, they are heavyweights--delivering excellent audio quality and offfering terrific comfort. I can wear them for hours and forget that I even have them on. I highly recommend these headphones for people who are on-the-go and need a light, comfortable, good quality headphone.
