According to Philips' research, more than 92 percent of users rated the remote's SimpleSetup feature as "good" or "very good." In a few minutes or less, you'll be able to control your TVs, DVD players, DVRs, and cable/satellite devices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great basic remote -- easy to setup, understand, and use., April 27, 2010
This review is from: Philips SRP2003/27 Universal 3 In 1 Remote Control for TV and DVD with XL Buttons (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
-----------------
Quick Summary:
-----------------

Pros:
** Easy to program
** Easy to use
** Very inexpensive

Cons:
** You may have to tinker with the settings for some of the buttons to get them to respond like the original remote
** Cable box setup can be a little confusing -- make sure you know the maker of the box rather than your cable provider

-----------------
Details:
-----------------

I've always wanted to try a universal remote because like most home theater installations, we have a separate remote for:

-- cable box
-- TV
-- ROKU box
-- Blu-Ray player
-- Audio receiver
-- TV

Just to turn on the cable, you have to use one remote to turn on the TV and then turn on the cable box. There is only one remote for the TV and one cable remote which are normally kept next to my husband's spot -- since the remote gene is on the Y-chromosome.

I was concerned that a universal remote would be difficult to setup and that it would require a high-end expensive remote with a fancy user interface in order to program it. I received the remote today and within 1 hour, I was able to get my TV, cable box, and Blu-Ray player all operating under a single remote. No help from the husband required... just following the 4-step process for each device by following the instructions.

I did have a few problems getting the cable box to respond because we have TimeWarner cable but our cable box is Scientific Atlanta so I wasn't sure which to use. Also, when I initially tried to use the Scientific Atlanta code, it would not "shut off" (which is required to complete and confirm the programming). However, when I used the 9999 code (which will search the database to find the right code for you), that worked just fine. Also, I subsequently was able to reprogram it specifically for Scientific Atlanta (which has some advantages because you can fine-tune the button settings).

Also, the manual is a little confusing because the language is a little too "general" in an effort to make the instructions short rather than having specific instructions for DVD, Cable, and TV. However, given that I was able to figure it out, not that big a deal.

I will probably get the higher end model since this remote is limited to 3 devices and we have six devices I would like to control. But for the money, this is a great addition to our family so that we don't have to fight over the remote, if/when the kids lose one, we're set.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok, May 25, 2010
This review is from: Philips SRP2003/27 Universal 3 In 1 Remote Control for TV and DVD with XL Buttons (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The Philips SRP2003/27 Universal 3 In 1 Remote Control is an extremely basic universal remote. The remote feels quite sturdy and good in the hand. It's ideal for those who require nothing more from a remote other than controlling the three electronic devices it was meant to control which is a TV, cable/satellite box and DVD player. This remote doesn't promise to do anymore than what it does. However, the functions it can perform, it can do well.

The setup and operation is pretty easy. One doesn't need to be technologically inclined. The hardest part of experiencing this remote is finding the codes for your various devices. Since I have common brand names, finding the codes wasn't a challenge. If the first code of the brand name didn't work, the second code did the trick.

Many of today's modern electronics such as blu-ray players, DVRs and such require many more buttons and controls in order for them to operate correctly. So since this is not a learning remote, you can't teach this remote any more commands other than what's laid out in front of you. This is what makes this remote quite limited in functionality. But like I said, it's good for the basics and doesn't promise more than what it can deliver.

If you have all the latest techie gadgets and need a remote for them, this remote is not for you. If you need a no-frills remote that doesn't require you to have a degree from MIT to operate, then get this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy setup, but not fully compatible, May 17, 2010
This review is from: Philips SRP2003/27 Universal 3 In 1 Remote Control for TV and DVD with XL Buttons (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Currently in our living room we have 3 remotes. The TV which we only use to change the source selection to "Video 1" to use the DVD player. The DVD remote which is obviously for the DVD and the Cable remote which controls the cable box and all aspects of the TV except of course source selection. We have looked into purchasing a Harmony remote because of so many friends that are happy with them, but because of the price we haven't yet. When I was given the opportunity to try out the Philips SRP2003/27 Universal 3 In 1 Remote Control for TV and DVD I was hopeful that we might have found an alternative.

I was initially surprised at the ease of setup. Both our TV and DVD player are Samsung so the code used was the same and our Cable box is Motorola. After the initial programming all 3 devices were working using this remote, but I did find that even with additional programming I could not get ALL of the features to work. The most important one being the "On Demand" feature with our cable box. We use that a lot and no matter what we did we could not get it to recognize that feature on any on the available buttons.

Overall this remote is both good and bad. Good in the fact that it's so easily programmable, I would feel comfortable giving this to my Mom or Grandmother. Bad in the fact that although it will work for most features, it doesn't work for all and for me that's the deal breaker.
