This review is from: Philips Streamium MX6000i 5-DVD Home Theater System with Wi-Fi Connectivity (Electronics)
This theater system was a replacement for another theater system made by Philips that broke after 5 months.
This one was in my house less than a month when it went to the shop to have the laser replaced. That was after playing less than 10 dvds. After it was repaired, it played 3 dvds before needing to go back into the shop. We are less than two months into having this system in my house and it has needed repairs 3 times. Customer service is less than helpful. They would like me to ship it back to them at MY expense and they will ship me yet another unit. Philips has no customer service and the products aren't worth the money.

Buyer beware. If you buy make sure you test EVERY feature before the 30 days are up. This will take alot of work as there are many features and alot of setup. Otherwise you cannot return it.
The MX 6000i I received had the following issues: 1) DVD player did not work 2) DVD drawer was stuck open after 3 openings. 4) Phillips support does not recognize the product model number 5) Product has many modes (TV sound, DVD, internet, PC link) and locks up in these modes requiring a reboot. 6) Reboots are sometimes slow 7) TV sound mode has significant delay from TV picture 8) After some time TV sound mode adds artifacts to the TV sound requiring reboot. 9) Streamed media is jerky. 10) DVD drawers required many pushings of the buttons to open. 11) The pictures of this thing are misleading the tower speakers are really like 10 times the height of the DVD unit.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Upon opening up the box, I discovered the poorly made, cheap plastic speaker stand was broken at the base. I went ahead and set it up just to see how the thing worked, and lo and behold the component video signal did not work. I spoke to Phillips guaranteed-to-make-you-pull-your-hair-out customer service people just to make sure there was no setting I was failing to change. They agreed that there was indeed a problem with the unit and suggested I send it back. Amazon was quick to send me a replacement unit, however when I tried this one, the same problem occured. The regular video and the s-video both work fine, just the component signals don't work. I double checked my component imput with another dvd player and it worked just dandy. Shame on Phillips for shipping a faulty product.

Pros - when it works:
- Great sound - Lots of functionality - Good looks - Being connected: internet radio, automatic firmware upgrades downloaded, online user forum (see below) Cons: - DVD door sticks open, won't read DVDs at all - If it does read a DVD, it crashes 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through it - Unable to stream videos from the PC over 1.2 mbps bitrate, meaning you can't stream DVD quality movies at all - Streaming of content at any bitrate, from PC or web, periodically crashes and requires system reboot (especially annoying when using the internet radio during a dance party...) - System won't play through multiple discs in sequence nor will it shuffle across discs - Occasionally system won't play discs at all and needs to be reset (unplug power for 30 seconds, then reconnect holding standby button pushed down) My unit has been at the authorized service center for 4 months now, waiting for a new motherboard - it is backordered, and Philips will not tell the service center or me how long it will take. I have called Philips several times: each time they promise someone in Consumer Relations will call back, but no-one ever has. Some of the issues may be solved in future firmware upgrades, but the company doesn't publish what will be included nor when it will be available. For more information on users' experience with this system, check out the online forum accessible through Philips' website. You'll see the issues I outline above are common to this model - mine is not an isolated case! On balance, I would have shopped around more before buying. If I could start again, would settle on a more robust pure home theater system together with a dedicated streaming media device.

I bought my Streamium MX6000i a few months back and it just keeps getting better. I didn't have any of the setup issues descibed by other owners (I've been in the computer field for over 14 years). I thought the setup was pretty straight forward (I only had to refer to the manual once). New services and updates are available on a regular basis. I create slideshows with pictures taken on my digital camera. My wife still likes the 35mm camera so we can view those pictures via Yahoo!. My next purchase will be a Philips flat-panel TV.

Set up cost some time, but you get unique features for the money. Tivo and Replay users will appreciate the ability to connect to the internet for streaming audio. There is a Philips website with free content and subscriptions to various content sources.
Also it has the ability to play music and videos from your PC. This is the device to have if you are an iPOD user. Or if you make home MPEG videos I used an ethernet cable to connect to my home network. And performance is nice. The sound quality is good, as one can expect with the more expensive Philips audio equipment. Enjoy |
